PS Move API: A Cross-Platform 6DoF Tracking Framework Thomas Perl∗ Benjamin Venditti† Hannes Kaufmann‡ Interactive Media Systems Group University of Technology Vienna ABSTRACT With the introduction of 6DoF motion controllers for game con- soles, low cost hardware for 3D interaction became widely avail- able. However, no fully-featured software solution for 6DoF track- ing exists that takes advantage of the PlayStation (PS) Move Motion Controller without additional hardware. We designed, developed and evaluated a library - the PS Move API - that enables developers to use the PS Move Motion Controller as 6DoF input device in combination with a camera. Initially we solved hardware related problems such as pairing and communi- cation over USB and Bluetooth. In this paper we describe how we perform visual tracking and sensor fusion, combining visual and in- ertial data. Performance results show that multiple controllers can be tracked simultaneously in real time. Chapter 9 FORENSIC ANALYSIS OF THE SONY PLAYSTATION PORTABLE Scott Conrad, Carlos Rodriguez, Chris Marberry and Philip Craiger Abstract The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a popular portable gaming device with features such as wireless Internet access and image, music and movie playback. As with most systems built around a processor and storage, the PSP can be used for purposes other than it was originally intended – legal as well as illegal. This paper discusses the features of the PSP browser and suggests best practices for extracting digital evidence. Keywords: Sony PlayStation Portable, forensic analysis 1. Introduction The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a popular portable video game system that has additional multimedia and Internet-related capa- bilities. Originally released in 2004, the PSP features a 4.3” widescreen LCD with 480×272 pixel resolution. It comes with a dual core 222 MHz R4000 CPU, 32 MB RAM and 4 MB of embedded DRAM, which holds the operating system [6]. The PSP uses a proprietary Universal Me- dia Disk (UMD) as its primary read-only storage media for games and movies. The device also features 802.11b Wi-Fi connectivity for multi- player games and utilizes a Pro Duo memory stick for secondary storage. In September 2007, Sony released a new version of the PSP that is 33% lighter and 19% thinner, appropriately dubbed the PSP Slim & Lite. The Slim & Lite version caches UMD data in memory to decrease game loading time and provides additional features such as a brighter screen, composite TV output, charging via USB and double the onboard RAM (64 MB) [8]. -

CHAPTER ONE What Is Casual Gaming? Over the past several years, the term “ casual game ” has been bandied about quite a bit. It gets used to describe so many different types of games that the definition has become rather blurred. But if we look at all of the ways that “ casual ” gets used, we can begin to tease out common elements that inform the design of these games: ● Rules and goals must be clear. ● Players need to be able to quickly reach proficiency. ● Casual game play adapts to a player’s life and schedule. ● Game concepts borrow familiar content and themes from life. While all game design should take these issues into account, these elements are of particular importance if you want to reach a broad audience beyond traditional gamers. This book will look at elements that a wide array of casual games share and draw out common lessons for approaching game design. Hopefully it will be of use not just to casual game designers, but to all game designers and even general experience designers as well. Everywhere you look these days, you see impact of casual games. More than 200 million people play casual games on the Internet, according to the Casual Games Association. This audience generated revenues in excess of $2.25 billion in 2007. 1 This may seem meager compared to the $41 billion posted by the entire game indus- try worldwide,2 but casual games currently rank as one of the fastest growing sec- tors of the game industry. As growth in the rest of the industry stagnated, the casual downloadable market barreled ahead. -

Abstract Due to the increasing popularity of thin client systems for gaming, it is important to un- derstand the effects of different network conditions on users. This paper describes our experiments to determine the effects of latency on player performance and quality of expe- rience (QoE). For our experiments, we collected player scores and subjective ratings from users as they played short game sessions with different amounts of additional latency. We found that QoE ratings and player scores decrease linearly as latency is added. For ev- ery 100 ms of added latency, players reduced their QoE ratings by 14% on average. This information may provide insight to game designers and network engineers on how latency affects the users, allowing them to optimize their systems while understanding the effects on their clients. This experiment design should also prove useful to thin client researchers looking to conduct user studies while controlling not only latency, but also other network conditions like packet loss.
