REPORTS 155 The “Local Culture and Diversity on the Prairies” Project (1) Nadya Foty and Andriy Nahachewsky University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Introduction The Peter and Doris Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore at the University of Alberta is in the process of concluding a project with several partners to record some 900 hours involving 2,000 interviews with people who remember life on the Canadian prairies prior to 1939. The project is called “Local Culture and Diversity on the Prairies” At the time of this writing, most of the interviews have been conducted but the compilation, coding, analysis and description of findings are still underway. For this reason, this essay takes the form of a personal perspective of the project, description of issues influencing project design, and a statement of aspirations rather than an authoritative reporting of its results. The aim of the project has been to document everyday life, ethnic identity and regional variation among people of Ukrainian, French, German and English heritage.(2) How did people from diverse backgrounds interact, adapt and become “prairie Canadians” in the first half of the twentieth century? What was the relationship between cultural inheritance and local community participation? How did they express their various identities on the local community level? What factors affected regional variation in these communities? The project is designed to generate a great deal of documentary information and primary archival resources for further research in many aspects of these people’s lives. Ethnographic research about ethnicity, integration and Canadianiza- tion as social processes in a given period is perhaps best conducted indirectly. -

Nationalism, Internationalism and Chinese Foreign Policy CHEN ZHIMIN*
Journal of Contemporary China (2005), 14(42), February, 35–53 Nationalism, Internationalism and Chinese Foreign Policy CHEN ZHIMIN* This article examines the role of nationalism in shaping Chinese foreign policy in the history of contemporary China over the last 100 years. Nationalism is used here as an analytical term, rather than in the usual popular pejorative sense. By tracing the various expressions of contemporary Chinese nationalism, this article argues that nationalism is one of the key enduring driving forces which have shaped Chinese foreign policy over the period; as China increasingly integrates herself into this globalized and interdependent world and Chinese confidence grows, the current expression of Chinese nationalism is taking a more positive form, which incorporates an expanding component of internationalism. In recent years, nationalism has been one of the key focuses in the study of China’s foreign policy. In the 1990s, several Chinese writers started to invoke the concept of nationalism, both in their study of Chinese foreign policy and in their prescriptions for the Chinese foreign policy. Likewise, in English-language scholarship the study of Chinese nationalism largely sets the parameters of the debate about the future of Chinese foreign policy and the world’s response to a rising China. An overarching theme of this Western discourse is a gloomy concern with the worrisome nature of recent expressions of Chinese nationalism. Samuel P. Huntington was famously concerned about China’s intention ‘to bring to an end the -

FINLAND-SWEDISH LITERATURE IN THE CZECH FIELD OF LITERARY PRODUCTION Jan Dlask Charles University in Prague [email protected] Abstract This contribution, theoretically and methodologically inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's concept of a literary field, analyses the case of Finland-Swedish literature translations into Czech. This literature is viewed as Swedish-language minority literature in Finland after 1900. The field of literary production is small, but nevertheless represents a varied Finland-Swedish 'segment' in the Czech field. As such it constitutes a certain publishing field, having two polarities (commercial/intellectual; young/old) and being entered into by publishers and translators who select writers and books from a certain space of possibles. Print runs of the published books and the distribution of publishing grants are explored with a view to the sociological character of the research. The analysis is divided into sections according to genres and their presupposed place in the field. It is found that while the mechanisms in the Czech publishing field of Finland- Swedish literature are fragmentary (many different authors, works, translators and publishers), the Bourdieusian approach is a productive framework through which to view the division between the intellectual and commercial poles. The position of Finland-Swedish modernist poetry and prose – Edith Södergran, Bo Carpelan and Hagar Olsson, published by Práce and Odeon publishers – is especially significant on the intellectual pole, as well as the position of their advocates within the Czech field (e.g. Josef B. Michl). Short stories, extracts and essays, often belonging to the Finland-Swedish classics (e.g. Christer Kihlman, Henrik Tikkanen), were mainly published in cultural reviews. -

Girl in Red - Serotonin Episode 208
Song Exploder girl in red - Serotonin Episode 208 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. Before this episode starts, I want to let you know that there is some frank discussion of mental health issues, including panic attacks, medical fears and thoughts of self-harm. There’s also some explicit language. (“Serotonin” by GIRL IN RED) Hrishikesh: Marie Ulven is a singer, songwriter, and producer from Norway, who makes music under the name, girl in red. She just released her debut album in April 2021, but she’s already got a lot of fans and she’s gotten a lot of critical acclaim from two EPs and singles that she’s released online, including a couple of songs that went gold. The New York Times included her work in their best songs of the year in both 2018 and 2019. Last year she was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Norwegian Grammys, and this year she won their award International Success of the Year. “Do you listen to girl in red?” has also become code on TikTok, a sort of shibboleth, to ask if someone’s a lesbian. In this episode, Marie breaks down the song “Serotonin,” a song that started as a video she posted to her own TikTok in the early days of lockdown in 2020. You’ll hear the original version she recorded on her own, before she started working with producer Matias Téllez, and later, with Grammy-winning artist and producer Finneas O’Connell, who helped finish the song. -

Kampf Um Wort Und Schrift
