The Companion to the Edington Music Festival
The Priory Church of Saint Mary, Saint Katharine and All Saints, Edington, near Westbury, Wiltshire THE COMPANION TO THE EDINGTON MUSIC FESTIVAL Sunday, 20 August to Sunday, 27 August 2000 1 Contents Introduction Peter Barley Welcome to the Edington Festival of Music within the Liturgy for the year 2000. Whatever one's views on where the millennium really comes, and whether this is really a great birthday for the Church, it is clearly a momentous milestone, and not least for Edington — the forty-fifth festival and the year that sees the launch of the Festival Association. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Bow down before him, his glory proclaim. I find these words from the well-known 19th century Epiphany hymn by J.S.B. Monsell (and also familiar from Psalm 96 and settings by Elgar and Wesley) particularly poetic and meaningful when it comes to considering worship at Edington. The beauty of holiness has a special resonance for all those of us lucky enough to be worshippers at this unique Introduction 3 Festival, where we are able to rejoice in, celebrate and relish the quality of our liturgy and worship — its beauty and holiness. Festival & General Information 6 The word 'liturgy' is derived from two Greek words (leitos and ergos) which translate as 'public action'. Thus we have acts of public worship, made up of praise, penitence, prayer Acknowledgements 6 and thanksgiving. Canon Neil Heavisides spoke eloquently and movingly about the life and work of Ralph Dudley on Friends' Day at last year's Festival, and alluded to Dudley's clear vision of liturgy as 'the people's work', where not just music and the spoken word Edington Festival 2001 7 but also deportment was an art. -

The Use of Multiple Stops in Works for Solo Violin by Johann Paul Von
THE USE OF MULTIPLE STOPS IN WORKS FOR SOLO VIOLIN BY JOHANN PAUL VON WESTHOFF (1656-1705) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO GERMAN POLYPHONIC WRITING FOR A SINGLE INSTRUMENT Beixi Gao, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2017 APPROVED: Julia Bushkova, Major Professor Paul Leenhouts, Committee Member Susan Dubois, Committee Member Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John W. Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Vice Provost of the Toulouse Graduate School Gao, Beixi. The Use of Multiple Stops in Works for Solo Violin by Johann Paul Von Westhoff (1656-1705) and Its Relationship to German Polyphonic Writing for a Single Instrument. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2017, 32 pp., 19 musical examples, bibliography, 46 titles. Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth- century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project focuses on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time is included in this document. -
The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there. -

CARRY ON STREAMIN from EDINBURGH FOLK CLUB Probably the best folk club in the world! Dateline: Wednesday 24 February 2021 Volume 1.18 INEXORABLY MOVING TOWARDS ‘NORMALITY’ SANDY BELL’S BAR, the world- renowned – nay, famous - haunt for many folkies over many years and many other ordinary folk (non-folk muggles(?) as the mighty Rowling might have said), has just posted some great news on Facebook (February 24 2021) … “Excellent news! Received a £10k grant from Grassroots Music this morning, so that will help immensely going forward. The sooner we open the better but as we are a ‘wet led’ only pub and small in capacity we will be among the last to open along with night clubs etc. Once we are open (which we are confident now we will Sandy Bell's Bar: re-opening … hoping, sometime in 2021. be) the hard part begins (as we had to take on a £50k business loan to keep us along with you, our loyal customers afloat and still have a deferred VAT arriving back in full force we're confident payment to settle amongst another few we will prevail. Thank you for your bills that had been put on hold). Loans support, looking forward welcoming you and bills will have to be paid but with a all back.” few sacrifices and careful budget control Having reported on the cancellation of CONTENTS Glastonbury and HebCelt in the last COS Page 1 Lead story a couple of weeks ago, this announcement Page 2-3-5, 7 The First Whammy (by Fish) (prophesy?) from Sandy Bell’s boss Stevie Page 7 Edinburgh Fringe President Hannah is a most welcome indication that Page 8-9 Keeping Gaelic Traditions things are perhaps, just perhaps, turning a Vibrant In Edinburgh corner at last. -
