Presentamos información sobre la distribución geográfica, morfología y reproducción de Vampyriscus nymphaea en Colombia, basándonos en la revisión de especímenes museológicos de co- lecciones colombianas. Previamente la distribución de V. nymphaea en Colombia se consideraba res- tringida a las tierras bajas al occidente de la cordillera Occidental en la región Pacífico; en este trabajo confirmamos la presencia de esta especie en la región Caribe y en el nororiente de la cordillera Occiden- tal de los Andes colombianos en el Bajo Río Cauca. La morfología externa y craneana de la especie fue homogénea y el análisis de dimorfismo sexual secundario de las poblaciones de la región Pacífico no mostró diferencias significativas, sin embargo la longitud de la tibia y la profundidad de la caja craneana son proporcionalmente mayores en los machos y el ancho zigomático en las hembras. -

This guide includes representative species from all families encountered in the lowlands (< 400 masl), where ca. 75 species possibly occur. Diversity of Bat Species across Dominica Brittany Moore, Hannah Rice, Meredith Stroud Texas A&M University Tropical Field Biology Dominica 2015 Dr. Thomas Lacher Dr. Jim Woolley Abstract: Twelve species of bats can be found on the island of Dominica, however there are still some species that have not been thoroughly catalogued. Our report is based on further findings regarding Artibeus jamaicensis, Sturnira lilium, Ardops nichollsi, Myotis dominicensis, Monophyllus plethodon and Brachyphylla cavernarum. We collected mass, forearm length, hind foot length, ear length, sex, and reproductive condition for every individual bat and then compared this information among species to observe morphological differences. We also added new data to past studies on wing loading and aspect ratios for the species we caught. We found a statistical significance among species in body size measure and wing morphology. Among the bats examined, the measurements can be used in order to positively identify species. Introduction: Dominica, also known as the Nature Island, is home to a great diversity of plants and animals. There are many various habitats ranging from dry forest to montane and elfin rainforest. Within each habitat, one may find species only endemic to that area. Animal activity at night in Dominica is quite different than what can be witnessed during the day. As nighttime falls, the call of the tink frog can be heard all over the island, and the mating click beetles will illuminate even the darkest of forests, but by far the most exciting nocturnal animals are the thousands of bats that come alive when the sun begins to set. -

SIMMONS1 ABSTRACT The fossil record of bats is extensive in the Caribbean, but few fossils have previously been reported from the Dominican Republic. In this paper, we describe new collections of fossil bats from two flooded caves in the Dominican Republic, and summarize previous finds from the Island of Hispaniola. The new collections were evaluated in the context of extant and fossil faunas of the Greater Antilles to provide information on the evolution of the bat community of Hispaniola. Eleven species were identified within the new collections, including five mormoopids (Mormoops blainvillei, †Mormoops magna, Pteronotus macleayii, P. parnellii, and P. quadridens), five phyllostomids (Brachy- phylla nana, Monophyllus redmani, Phyllonycteris poeyi, Erophylla bombifrons, and Phyllops falcatus), and one natalid (Chilonatalus micropus). All of these species today inhabitant Hispaniola with the exception of †Mormoops magna, an extinct species previously known only from the Quaternary of Cuba, and Pteronotus macleayii, which is currently known only from extant populations in Cuba and Jamaica, although Quaternary fossils have also been recovered in the Bahamas. Differences between the fossil faunas and those known from the island today suggest that dispersal and extirpa- tion events, perhaps linked to climate change or stochastic events such as hurricanes, may have played roles in structuring the modern fauna of Hispaniola. 1 Division of Vertebrate Zoology (Mammalogy), American Museum of Natural History. -

E-mail: [email protected] (GRF). * Corresponding author The visored bat, Sphaeronycteris toxophyllum Peters, 1882, is a species listed as Data Deficient by the International Union for the Conserva- tion of Nature, being considered rare throughout its geographical range due to the small number of specimens recorded. This study reports a new record that broadens the distribution range of the species in Colombia to the central mountain range and upper valley of the Magdalena river. One adult male of S. toxophyllum was captured after a sampling effort of 3,870 net-hours over 36 nights in the Andean region, at the upper valley of the Magdalena river, Department of Tolima, Colombia. Its diet was analyzed and a model for Colombia was built. The morpho- metric analysis of the specimen captured yielded values lower than those previously reported for Colombia. The analysis of stomach contents identified two floristic elements as part of its diet, corroborating the frugivorous feeding habits of this species. -
