On the cargo front this results in lost revenue and productivity, with no clear path to address the growing demands of the global market place. What if we could disrupt transportation, an aging and non-agile industry which has not seen a new mode in over 100 years. By introducing game changing technologies we can increase capacity, enhance energy efficiency, and shrink our carbon footprint. Dr. Sengupta will discuss how space- age tech coupled to the VC funded innovation environment are enabling the revolution in green transportation. She will share her real-world engineering projects from her work developing the world’s first hyperloop in Las Vegas Nevada, to autonomous VTOL air taxis her new Anita Sengupta company is designing in Detroit Michigan, to her research on entry systems that will land the first humans on Mars. Measured in the North Sea in 1995, it was one of the first confirmed observations of a freak wave in the ocean. Freak waves are unexpectedly large in comparison to surrounding waves. They are difficult to predict and are commonly attributed as probable causes for maritime catastrophes such as the sinking of large ships. A team of researchers led by Oxford engineers Dr Mark McAllister and Professor Ton van den Bremer, in collaboration with Professor Thomas Adcock (University of Oxford) and Dr Sam Draycott at the University of Edinburgh, set out to reproduce the Draupner wave under laboratory conditions. The United Kingdom is likely to be confirmed next month at the United Nations climate change summit in Madrid as the host of the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2020. Next year’s summit, which your Government has indicated will take place in Glasgow, will be absolutely vital to international efforts to avoid dangerous climate change. Parties to the Paris Agreement are expected to submit ahead of the summit revised nationally determined contributions which include more ambitious pledges to reduce annual emissions of greenhouse gases. The United Kingdom has been attempting to lead by example on climate change and has reduced its annual production of emissions of greenhouse gases by 44 per cent between 1990 and 2018, while increasing its gross domestic product by about 75 per cent over the same period. The United Kingdom’s consumption emissions have also started to decline. Although the United Kingdom is currently not on track to meet its fourth and fifth carbon budgets, according to the Committee on Climate Change, the UK Government made a very significant advance on domestic policy earlier this year by successfully securing the passage of legislation through Parliament to strengthen the Climate Change Act such that the new target is to reduce annual emissions of greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050.

    j1 1 Outlook of the Antiviral Drug Era, Now More Than 50 Years After Description of the First Antiviral Drug Erik De Clercq 1.1 Introduction: The Prehistory More than 50 years ago, the synthesis of IDU (iododeoxyuridine), a thymidine analogue, was described by Prusoff [1]. This compound would later become the first antiviral drug to be licensed for (topical) use in the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections of the eye. In this sense, the advent of IDU marked the birth of the antiviral drug era. There are now about 50 licensed antiviral compounds, half of them are used for the treatment of AIDS, of which the viral origin was first recognized 27 years ago [2, 3] (2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology was awarded to Fran¸coise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier for their discovery of human immu- nodeficiency virus and to Harald zur Hausen for demonstrating the link between human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer). Was IDU truly the first antiviral? In retrospect, the antiviral chemotherapy era had a rather slow and unremarkable start. The first compounds quoted to have antiviral activity (against vaccinia virus) were the thiosemicarbazones [4, 5]. These compounds were also found effective against vaccinia virus infection in mice and rabbits [6–8], and one of the thiosemicarbazones, that is, N-methylisatin-b-thiosemicarbazone, even entered clinical studies for the prophylaxis of smallpox [9] just when the smallpox vaccination took over and made any further attempts to develop an antipoxvirus drug apparently superfluous. Then came the benzimidazole derivatives as inhibitors of influenza virus multi- plication [10, 11], but despite the reported effectiveness of the 5,6-dichloro-1-b-D- ribofuranosyl benzimidazole (DRB) [10, 11] against influenza virus multiplication, it was not pursued further as a potential anti-influenza virus agent.
