C O M M O D O R E ' S R E P O R T R C M I C H A E L P E T T R E Y

To sum up the 2020 season so far words like change, growth, and opportunity come to mind. With the wonderful weather we have had so far this boating season it almost seems too perfect given the state of the world right now, however, this hasn't stopped Mentor Harbor.

Our members have been really utilizing the club, when you take a walk around you can see so much activity, everywhere, from the docks to the west beach. With the addition of the Adirondack chairs and firepits I have seen everything happening at the west beach from family parties, yoga, bonfires, raft off gatherings, to our own Vice Commodore's 40ish birthday party.

With the rapid growth in membership our docks are filling up quickly and we are very focused on getting the power fixed on the east beach to help create more dockage for our current members and for new membership coming in. This will be another part of MHYC that I can't wait to see being used!

As the end of summer approaches many of our staff will be going back to school and due to the pandemic we had to, unfortunately, cancel our employee party. But I wanted to take a moment and personally thank this years staff as they have done a great job of keeping our club safe and clean to help keep us all healthy. You all have gone above and beyond with service this year, and for that, Thank you! If you feel the same as me, in lieu of the employee party, we are asking for donations of any size to send the staff off with something a little extra this year. Just email Charlie Davis at [email protected] to let him know you would like to contribute.

And in closing I would like to say great job to the Crow's Nest Sail Camp this year for a successful "normal" to a pretty "abnormal" summer. You all did a fantastic job and I am excited to see what Fall programs you have in place.

Thank you again to our members and staff to this season of change, growth and opportunity, we couldn't have done it without you.

FLEET SURGEON JANET M. BLANCHARD M.D , PC – FLEET SURGEON

SAFETY FIRST Janet M. Blanchard M.D , PC – Fleet Surgeon

Finally, we have incurred some beautiful weather and it is very nice to see all the boats in the harbor. This year, however, not only do we have to worry about safety but also safety during this continuing coronavirus outbreak. There are a few safety measures which I cannot stress enough:

1.Life jackets for children under the age of eight should be worn!! This is especially true early in the season due to the temperature of the water. 2.Please do NOT strap infants and young children in the stroller while walking down the dock. If, by chance, the stroller ends up in the water, the infant cannot get out! 3.MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND AED’S. There are medical equipment boxes located at the end of every dock and on the East Beach. (If it ever opens!) 4.AED’S: (Automatic External Defibrillators) are located in the following locations: All should be marked: A) Lobby – As you go down the steps to the spinnaker room B) Gas Dock C) Behind the pool deck bar 5.EpiPens -Are located in the same locations as AED’S and, also, in the business office. 6.There are Orange Buoy Rings located in the same place as the medical equipment. 7.Please check your fire extinguisher’s expiration date. 8.First Aid Boxes should be a must on all boats. 9.CO monitors should be a must. If you have ever had CO poisoning, you will remember it and it can be deadly!! If you are underway and have a canvas on the back, make sure you have good ventilation.

CPR CLASSES: Will be given to the Staff. (The pool staff is already CPR certified) We will set up classes for the Members as the season progresses. Be safe and Have a Wonderful Season!! Respectfully Submitted, Janet M. Blanchard, M.D., Fleet Surgeon and PC JUNIOR ACTIVITIES KATHY ALLYN-JUNIOR ACTIVITIES CHAIRPERSON FFAALLLLSailing at MHYC - as of 7/31/20 All options and pricing and dates are subject to change. The Fall on Lake Erie offers some of the best boating weather - the Lake is warm, the sun is shining...why not enjoy it as much as we can?! This Summer, we expanded the use of our fleets beyond MHYC Crow’s Nest , through private lessons and adult learn-to-sail lessons. Now, we are adding even more options for all ages to enjoy the water, and play. As we proved this summer, sailing is a healthy, safe sport in this pandemic - especially when you are with your family and close friends who are part of your Quaranteam. We follow strict sanitation guidelines for both our hands and our boats, and we have an on-land mask policy (not on water while sailing). Thank you, Marty Weber – House Chair KEN BALOGH HARBOR COMMITTEE UPDATE HARBOR CHAIR

Thank you!

Harbor committee would like to send many Thank You's to PC Chuck Stephenson for his hours of work on the Army Corp channel study.

As you may or may not know, Chuck is serving as the Mhyc liaison with the Army Corp of Engineers, City of Mentor and Lake County officials regarding this all important project. This project is the future of Mentor Harbor and will lead to new channel structures which are currently some 90 years old.

Most recently, PC Stephenson single handedly spearheaded an initiative to sub contract the Geological Surveying phase of the project. This phase involves core samplings of our harbor channel as part of the study to ascertain the structure of the lake bed that will be expected to "take the load" of the new channel structures. Originally the cost of this Geological Survey was quoted at $90+k.

Through PC Stephenson's efforts and expertise as an engineer, he initiated and finalized sub contract agreements with local vendors to accomplish this work at a cost of $45k. As you can see, Chuck's efforts will save all parties some $45,000.

On behalf of the entire membership, THANK YOU, CHUCK! When you see Chuck around the club, please tell him Thanks for his work and his love for MHYC!

We continue to have a successful season and member usage is outstanding considering the conditions we are operating under. The results from the Mid-Summer Check In survey are in and this data we be a big help as we constantly look to tweak our processes and procedures to improve your Mentor Harbor experience. The numbers for club wide service are extremely encouraging and a result of the phenomenal group of young men and women that are on our current staff. If you haven’t donated to the staff fund, but were planning to, please let us know soon before our staff starts heading back to school.

The latest mandate from Governor DeWine states the following regarding last call and clearing alcoholic beverages from the tables:

"All establishments serving alcohol would have to stop sales by 10 p.m. Patrons must finish consuming their drinks by 11 p.m. with no exceptions."

We will abide by the Governor’s directive, which has been our policy with all State mandates since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis. As always, we appreciate your cooperation in helping to ensure the safest environment possible at Mentor Harbor.

I would like to remind everyone that there are no glasses, china or bottles allowed around the pool for obvious safety reasons. If you happen to notice this rule being violated please let the lifeguard, or any staff member, know about it and we will handle.

There is still plenty of summer left and the staff and I are busy planning ways to keep things entertaining in the Fall. Stay well and I hope to see you soon.
