John David Willett was the Master Distiller and part owner of Moore, Willett & Frenke Distillery in Bardstown, KY. John David’s son Lambert Willett walked 5 miles each way to his distilling job at the current site of Barton’s. It wasn’t until Lambert began working at the Bernhiem Distillery in Louisville that he purchased a car for his commute so he could come home to his family every night. Lambert worked 6 days a week for nearly a decade at Bernhiem. During prohibition Lambert raised cattle and hogs to support his family and community. The effects of prohibition were devastating to the Bourbon Capital of the World®. Immediately following the repeal of prohibition in December of 1933, Lambert’s son Thompson began learning the distilling trade apprenticing alongside his father at the age of 25. Est. 1936. Three short years after prohibition, on the site of the family hog and cattle farm, Thompson began construction on what is now the Willett Distillery. Before Johnny Walker Black Label and Chivas Regal took the Indian whisky market by storm there was a malt whisky being produced in India for quite some time, since 1855 in fact! Also this distillery is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas!! The brewing, distillation and maturation processes followed at the distillery are very similar to that of Scotch whisky. Yes I am referring to Mohan “Meakin’s Solan No 1”. The distillery is situated in Kasauli, a small town in Solan district in the state of Himachal Pradesh. So if you are one of those who believe that water plays a major role in the outcome of the distilled spirit then this location has perhaps some of the best streams of fresh water in the world. Pic. (1)Location of Solan district, 65 Kms from Chandigarh Now we are not talking about one of the multiple dubious whiskies produced in India, this one is a “legitimate” whisky even by Scottish standards! In fact this was considered the “only whisky” produced in India for a very long time, as this is a “Malt” whisky produced from barley unlike most other whiskies produced in India which use molasses. This distillery is well known for the “OLD MONK” rum, which most readers from the subcontinent will be familiar with. Till recently I had a misconception that it was a single malt whisky, which is what Wikipedia also states (have submitted a correction) but a little more research/ observation has shown me that this is a blended malt whisky. Solan number 1 was one of the most popular whisky back in the 80’s and largely supplied its products to the defense services of India. -

The Bourbon Country Reader Issue Contents in Chronological Order is a list of all the contents of every issue, in chronological order, from the beginning to the most recent issue. It lists the volume and issue number of each issue, the publication date, the headlines of all the stories in that issue, and where necessary there is a short description of what the story is about (when it isn't obvious from the headline). All product reviews are included too. All back issues of The Bourbon Country Reader are available as bound volumes except Volume One (see explanation, below). Each bound volume contains six issues. Volumes become available in bound form as soon as that volume is completed, i.e., after issue number six of that volume has been published. You may order bound volumes of back issues at bourbonstraight.com. WHY VOLUME ONE IS NOT AVAILABLE When we started The Reader in 1993, it was an experiment. We had no idea if anyone would be interested. The design was very crude. (Considering how simple it still is, that's saying something.) After the first six issues, we had worked out the kinks and decided to keep going. We decided to bury the experimental first volume, for reasons both aesthetic and technical. In light of that decision, we resolved to republish in future issues all significant stories from those first six issues, which we did, so you're really not missing anything by not having Volume One. -
