On the following page of the newsletter there is further information about what we can, and un- fortunately cannot do over the coming weeks. With the festive period approaching and the announcement of the new tiers once lockdown ends, I feel it is important to again reiterate requests for caution and safety with regards to COVID_19. Please ensure masks are worn on site, drop off and collection is swift and that you are all socially distanced from each other, children and staff. Messages for staff should be emailed rather than verbally shared at doorways where possible. Please keep the entrance areas onto the site clear so others can get through safely. I am sure you are all aware of the high levels of cases that are impacting on Frenchay in particular com- pared to the rest of the local authority. With this being the case and the placement of both Bristol and South Glos into tier 3 on Thursday I am requesting your support in keeping everyone COVID free for the fes- tive period. Staff have done an amazing job to keep bubbles separate, clean areas before and after use etc. and the results of this have been borne out by the fact that, as yet, we have had no confirmed cases. Children and parents have also played a valuable part in making this possible. Many of us are now hoping to be spending the festive season with loved ones who are vulnerable. We want to ensure that all of our community are infection free in order to enjoy a well earned break. Children in Need I am sure you all enjoyed watching our very own Jeremia on DIY SOS for Children in Need the other week. He has also featured on the Children in Need song which is amazing. We are all very proud of you Jeremia. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the wonderful charity. Our Just Giving Page has received an unbe- lievable £465 in donations, 186% of our intended total. We know this will go to many worthwhile projects to help those in need. Hello Yellow We have also raised £97 for the Young Minds Hello Yel- low fund raising from earlier this month. Thank you again to all those who have donated. Flu jab A reminder that on Thursday next week we shall be having the flu jabs. Staffing As shared with you on a previous newsletter our SENCO who is on secondment will be leaving to begin a new role at the end of this term. I am delighted to announce that we have appointed Mrs Gemma Morris to replace Mrs Knight in this role. Mrs Morris will be working with us for one morning a week as Mrs Knight has done. Mrs Morris has a wealth of experience and is really excited to be joining us. She has a passion for working with children with SEN and we know we have much to gain from working with her. As it is the period of Christ the King time the colour is white or gold. Believe, Belong, Become Christmas Plans at Frenchay This year is obviously going to be very different for us all during the festive season. Unfortunately there are events and activities that are not going to be possible this year with the COVID_19 restrictions. This includes the children giving out Christmas cards, the PTA Christmas Fair and them providing presents to the children from Father Christ- mas. Father Christmas himself will also not be able to visit school this year as he is going to keep himself safe in the North Pole until the big day! However there is still lots of fun to be had and we are working hard to try to make as many other activities as pos- sible work. Please see below for more information: Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the children is on 11th December. Please all wear your sparkly jumpers and don your reindeer antlers for this fun day. Christmas Dinner 16th December. There will be a Dolce Christmas Dinner. It is ESSENTIAL that all dinners are or- dered online through Dolce BY 9th DECEMBER. Any orders made after this point will not be possible due to the limitations for Dolce. Christmas Party There will be a Christmas party for the children on Thursday 17th December. These will be in bub- bles/ classes with party games and everyone enjoying some party food. We would ask that this year, all children come into school with a small plastic food container (or sandwich box) with their own portion of party food for them to enjoy. Food will not be shared as in previous years. Unfortunately the usual children’s entertainer provid- ed by the PTA will not be possible but there will be games and activities to enjoy the festive season. Children can wear party clothes for this day. Please remember our Allergy Policy when selecting food for the party. No nuts are allowed and please avoid any food containing egg products. There are many biscuits that contain egg so please check the label carefully. Nativity We are working hard to try an alternative Nativity for everyone to enjoy this year. Children in Unicorn, Gruffalo and those in year 2 in Griffin will be performing the Christmas story in a series of scenes which will be rec- orded and shared via a google link. This can then be shared with grandparents and friends for all to enjoy. We would like your permission to film your child in these scenes for sharing in this way. Without permission your child will not be on camera as part of the performance. It is therefore essential that all parents from reception to year 2 complete the form accessed here expressing whether you give consent or not by Wednesday 2nd December. Panto The annual Panto trip will not go ahead but we have organised a virtual panto which can be enjoyed by all classes in their bubbles. This is a performance of ‘Covidella and the Masked Ball’! Something different to make this season even more memorable! Open the Book normally lead our worships every other week in school. As they are unable to visit at present they have been practising their own virtual version of the nativity which will be shared with us in each bubble. It is a lovely way for them to still be part of the school and for the children to see their worships which they thoroughly enjoy. Taken from Hebrews 10:24-25 ‘And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds’ Believe, Belong, Become Learning in Phoenix Class In Phoenix class we have been going Egyptian crazy recently! We have been learning all about Ancient Egypt and all the amazing things that they invented that we still use today. We have been creating our own Shadufs which the Egyptians used (and still use today) to extract water from the Nile into the surrounding fields. We have also been making our own canopic jars using clay and paper mâché. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the children in Phoenix class for always being positive and giving 100% in every lesson - as parents you should be proud! Worship This week I have been lucky enough to work with more children in class and welcoming those who are new to the school . They have placed their pebble in the koinonia bowl and we have had some heart warming discussions about what this means to us and how it impacts on the strength of our community.

We have been really impressed with the way the learners in our schools have adapted to the constant changes during the past year, even though we know that some have struggled with anxiety and illness. Overall infection rates have remained low this term in our schools as well as in the local community, although there was a flurry of positive cases in one school which was a reminder that we are not home and dry yet! Following a meeting with staff from the school and Public Health England, we have been asked to reiterate the following contact definitions: a close contact can be anyone who: lives in the same household as someone with COVID-19 symptoms or who has tested positive for COVID-19 has had any of the following types of contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 with either a PCR test or LFD test (if a confirmatory PCR test is negative, provided it was taken within two days of the positive LFD, it overrides the lateral flow test and close contacts can stop self-isolating): face-to-face contact including being coughed on or having a face-to-face conversation within 1 metre been within 1 metre for 1 minute or longer without face-to-face contact been within 2 metres of someone for more than 15 minutes (either as a one-off contact or added up together over 1 day) travelled in the same vehicle or a plane.

What follows is a random sample. Student Absence 2 We have recently celebrated the achievements of a large number of Year 11 students Library News 3 who have participated in a very positive Paired Reading initiative. These students have worked hard over the past school year, giving willingly of their time, with younger Tesco/Sainsbury 3 students in Years 7 and 8. It has made a significant difference to engaging students in Vouchers reading. Y11 Paired Reading 3 At the end of March, a large number of parents and students in Year 11 participated in a Ten Tors News 4 Revision Skills workshop. This was followed up in school with all Year 11 students re- ceiving training in practical revision strategies. The aim has been to provide students and ICT/Business 4 parents alike with techniques to assist with revision during this important time. Faculty News The examination period has now started for all Year 11 students with orals for Modern Expressive Arts 5 Foreign Language subjects taking place this week. We wish all students who are taking Faculty News exams the very best. PE Faculty News 6 The assembly programme this week has introduced all students to the Chipping Sodbury A Training 7 School House system which will be launched in September 2010.

Everyone should be working hard on their revision. There is a rich programme of support lessons at the end of the school day, a copy of which has recently been sent home. We do expect students to attend; it is easy to have an extra day of teaching and learning by the end of the week by participating in one extra hour a day at 3.15pm. This will make a significant difference to exam success. To assist with the pressures of exams, we are working with a local yoga teacher to run relaxation sessions during PE lesson time for Year 11 students. In addition, the school library is open every day after school to support every student with their study. It was great to see so many Year 11 students with their parents/carers at our 2 recent Post 16 events. There are a wide range of courses on offer across the Cotswold Edge 6th Form, achievement is some of the best in the area and transport is free. The deadline for applications is 3rd December. On 11th November, I had the pleasure of joining the Remembrance Parade on the High Street with student representatives.

    Update for Olympus Parents and Carers – 17th December 2020 Dear Parents and Carers, I would like to thank you for your support through what has felt like a very long term. My colleagues and I have been very impressed with the way in which learners have adapted to the changes to arrangements in our schools and the way that many of them have taken periods of self-isolation and remote learning in their stride. We know that it is not always easy to have children based at home during the day, whether or not they needed direct supervision to complete their schoolwork. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a peaceful and healthy break and all best wishes for the New Year – we hope that things may start to ease in the first part of 2021 as the vaccine becomes available to more people, although we recognise that January could still be challenging. I have provided information about rapid testing for Covid-19 in schools further on in this update. End of Term Arrangements As notified last week, term 2 ends for all learners at the usual time on Thursday, 17th December. Friday, 18th December is now a staff training day. We know that there were mixed views amongst Olympus parents and carers as well as staff about whether schools should have been providing remote learning or operating as normal this week and hope that you also recognise the constraints placed on us by Government regulations. On balance, we felt that bringing forward the end of term by a day when permitted to do so would slightly reduce the risk of infection and self-isolation during the school holiday.

Bob Conway Dear Friends As I write July’s Minister’s Message, we are continuing the process of reopening our churches of all denominations as relaxation of the Covid-19 lockdown measures progress. Indeed, we are all living in the hope that the Government’s planned relaxation of measures towards the end of June will have gone ahead by the time you read this, although recent developments regarding the Covid-19 variant first identified in India may yet force some curtailment of this.
