Fantasy writer/art rock visionary Michael Moorcock has teamed up once again with Don Falcone's space rock collective Spirits Burning for upcoming album The Hollow Lands , which has been released through Cleopatra Records. “ The Hollow Lands is a beautiful piece of work, building on An Alien Heat with musical subtlety and intelligence," says Moorcock. They are a wonderful complement to what is one of my own favourite sequences and I could not hope for a better interpretation.” The Hollow Lands is a continuation of a trilogy of Moorcock’s stories, dubbed The Dancers At The Ends Of Time series, that began with An Alien Heat , released in 2018. For this second instalment, Falcone has assembled a stellar cast of progressive rock luminaries including Blue Öyster Cult members Albert Bouchard, Eric Bloom, Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser and Joe Bouchard, Hawkwind associates Harvey Bainbridge, Steve Bemand, Bridget Wishart, Adrian Shaw and Dead Fred as well as Nektar’s Ron Howden, Strawbs' Chas Cronk, and many more! “This album was another opportunity to work closely with Al (Bouchard) on Mike's Dancers series," addds Falcone. A respectable writer whose fantasy novels have been captivating a few generations now, Michael Moorcock is no stranger to music world, and although he has a sort of solo career – as documented on a recent solo outing – the veteran’s rock credentials are mostly associated with HAWKWIND and BLUE ÖYSTER CULT whose records gave a tune to his lyrics. Yet his collaboration with Don Falcone’s SPIRITS BURNING proved more equal-footed, with their "An Alien Heat" bringing sci-fi context to life, so the end of 2020 will see the release – on CD and vinyl as well as download – of that album’s follow-up. An adaptation of “The Hollow Lands” – the second book of Moorcock’s “Dancers At The End Of Time” trilogy – it’s to feature, as usual, a variety of guests performers. When John Steinbeck was once asked how he went about writing, he replied, ‘With a pencil.’ Some writers are reluctant to give away too much about their inspiration, their influences, their thinking and writing and editing processes, as if wanting to perpetuate the Romantic fallacy that genius and inspiration just strike and that the lucky, ‘gifted’ individual is driven to pick up a pen and write down what the Muse dictates. Despite his prodigious gifts and his long-standing success as a novelist, Michael Moorcock is only too happy to share the secrets of his craft. In a 1992 book, Death Is No Obstacle , which is essentially a long transcript of interviews the writer Colin Greenland had with Moorcock in 1990, Moorcock happily reveals some of the ‘tricks of the trade’ of writing genre fiction, as well as thoughtfully exploring his own relationship with various genres of popular fiction. The book isn’t easy to get hold of – copies tend to go for around £50 online. I’m indebted to my university library, which owns a signed copy. In a previous post on Interesting Literature , I’ve outlined some of Moorcock’s top tips for writing a genre novel in a matter of days, which are taken from the first chapter of Death Is No Obstacle . The rest of the book covers, in order, comedy and science fiction (including a revealing discussion about Moorcock’s own self-confessed failure to write straight science fiction, partly because he has no great love for much mid-century SF), comic strips and commedia dell’Arte, didactic fiction (featuring Behold the Man , Moorcock’s remarkable novel about a time traveller who ends up living in the time of the Crucifixion), non-linear fiction, where it went wrong (featuring, perhaps surprisingly, a discussion of the ‘failure’ of Gloriana ), and imitating and remodelling (Conrad et al).

Changes in broadcast radio programming during the 1950s; the Compact Cassette during the 1970s; and the deregulation of media ownership during the 1990s are all examples of changes which have heavily affected the music industry. This study explores a similar but contemporary dynamics, examines how decision makers in the music industry perceive and make sense of the developments, and reveals how they revise their business strategies, based on their mental models of the media environment. A qualitative system dynamics model (the Music Industry Feedback Model) is developed in order to support the reasoning brought forward by the study. The model is empirically grounded, but is also based on previous music industry research and a theoretical platform constituted by concepts from evolutionary economics and sociology of culture. The empirical data primarily consist of 36 personal interviews with decision makers in the American, British and Swedish music industrial ecosystems.
