In a word, Radio Massacre International nail the vintage electronic music sound, but the band is simply more "nimble" than the first generation models, which greatly enhances the listening pleasure of the suitably attuned listener...if you're a musical novice unacquainted with RMI's sources, this music will serve as a stellar introduction to the form.”– Bill Tilland, All Music Guide “Frankly there isn't anyone out there doing this kind of music better… If you have a yearning for the glory days of the Berlin school, this is where you should be going.” – Spacerock.co.uk Radio Massacre International (RMI) is an electronic improvising trio that is carving out new ground in the genres of electronic space music and space rock. Composed of Steve Dinsdale (keyboards, electronics, drums), Duncan Goddard (keyboards, electronics, bass) and Gary Houghton (guitar, keyboards), the trio improvises with a mixture of vintage and modern analogue and digital equipment to create massive, shifting electronic soundscapes. Instantly recognizable, RMI’s organic, visceral, and at times rough-edged explorations in space music transport the genre popularized by Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel/Manuel Gottsching and Klaus Schulze in the 1970s into the 21st century.

They’d just hired it for a couple of months… …My goal was to make the music I’d actually like to listen to. … …I was clearly imagining life without a band at all, imagining a music I could make alone, like the painter I always wanted to be.” – Robert Wyatt, 2012 Some have called this - the complete set of Robert Wyatt's solo recordings made in the US in late 1968 - the ultimate Holy Grail. Half of the material here is not only previously unreleased - it had never been heard, even by the most dedicated collectors of Wyatt rarities. Until reappearing, seemingly out of nowhere, last year, the demo for “Rivmic Melodies”, an extended sequence of song fragments destined to form the first side of the second album by Soft Machine (the band Wyatt had helped form in 1966 as drummer and lead vocalist, and with whom he had recorded an as-yet unreleased debut album in New York the previous spring), was presumed lost forever. As for the shorter song discovered on the same acetate, “Chelsa”, it wasn't even known to exist! This music was conceived by Wyatt while off the road during and after Soft Machine's second tour of the US with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, first in New York City during the summer of 1968, then in the fall of that year while staying at the Experience's rented house in California, where he was granted free access to the TTG recording facility during studio downtime.

  • The Record Producer As Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry
The Record Producer as Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry A submission presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Glamorgan/Prifysgol Morgannwg for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Michael John Gilmour Howlett April 2009 ii I certify that the work presented in this dissertation is my own, and has not been presented, or is currently submitted, in candidature for any degree at any other University: _____________________________________________________________ Michael Howlett iii The Record Producer as Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry Abstract What is a record producer? There is a degree of mystery and uncertainty about just what goes on behind the studio door. Some producers are seen as Svengali- like figures manipulating artists into mass consumer product. Producers are sometimes seen as mere technicians whose job is simply to set up a few microphones and press the record button. Close examination of the recording process will show how far this is from a complete picture. Artists are special—they come with an inspiration, and a talent, but also with a variety of complications, and in many ways a recording studio can seem the least likely place for creative expression and for an affective performance to happen. The task of the record producer is to engage with these artists and their songs and turn these potentials into form through the technology of the recording studio. The purpose of the exercise is to disseminate this fixed form to an imagined audience—generally in the hope that this audience will prove to be real.

2 I have been the editor of magazines on tropical fish, exotic pets, UFOs, cryptozoology, and – of course – music, and there is something that I have noticed. Over the years various publishers have tried to get me to publish “thematic” issues, and this is something that I am loathe to do. For example, in a music magazine like this one, if I were to do a themed “punk” issue, it would immediately alienate all the people who like progressive rock. That is one thing that I am particularly proud of in this magazine; we cover anything, and everything, from anarchopunk to prog, and from folk to experimental jazz rock. In this specific issue there is everything from an interview with Barbara Dickson to articles about Rick Wakeman and Hugh Hopper. But, it is one of the more peculiarly Fortean aspects of magazine publishing that no matter how hard one tries, the vagaries of the space time continuum and Dear Friends, the very nature of the universe itself mean that no matter how hard you try to avoid doing themed Welcome to another edition of the Gonzo Weekly. issues, these appear of their own volition and the I have worked in publishing, on and off, since I first universe decides to present you with a theme, come edited my school newspaper at the age of 10, and what may. whilst I do not wish to claim that I am some sort of Citizen Kane-type publishing mogul, I have had a Once again, look at this issue. It was enough of a fair amount of disparate experience over the past 45 shock when earlier in the week, the legendary artist years.

I was always impressed by Penny Rimbaud’s statement that the later Crass singles were issued as “tactical responses” to given situations. I started off writing and editing Fanzines, and it is only for reasons of my own that I decided to issue this magazine like Dear Friends, clockwork every Saturday, more recently every Friday. And so, what was planned to be an ordinary “ring in the old, ring out the new” (or is it But I think that the job of a magazine is a the other way round?) type issue has complex one, and I wouldn’t really like to completely gone out the window.
