Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 2 Abstract This section discusses the complex psychological and philosophical reason for Shogun Yoshimune’s contrasting handlings of his two adopted daughters’ and his favorite son’s weddings. In my thinking, Yoshimune lived up to his philosophical principles by the illogical, puzzling treatment of the three weddings. We can witness the manifestation of his modest and frugal personality inherited from his ancestor Ieyasu, cohabiting with his strong but unconventional sense of obligation and respect for his benefactor Tsunayoshi. Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics.

  • Some Funny Niihama Dialect
What’s New? Niihama City No.266 October 2017 Published by SGG Niihama What is the personality of Ehimeites? Keiko Uraji, a gift concierge (from Ehime Shimbun May 4, 2017) I found an interesting article on SNS the other day. “Institute of Media Plus” conducted research on the stress index of about 70,000 women from age 20 to 69 all over Japan and it announced the ranking of "low-stress" prefectures. “Low-stress” means that a person feels fine in their daily life and keeps a balanced mind against stress. Surprisingly, the women of Ehime have the least stress in Japan. They pointed out the reasons why the women of Ehime have low-stress: 1. mild climate 2. few disasters 3. many gentle people 4. many hot springs 5. nature near the town 6. strong love for their hometown Indeed!! I quite agree with what they say. Ehimeites are commonly accepted as gentle and easygoing. Ehime is blessed with a mild climate so people did not have to work so hard to get food compared to other regions. As a result they evolved to be gentle and easygoing. Although generally they are fine and easygoing, they can also be quite hasty. They tend to turn right impatiently before a car passing straight in the opposite lane. This risky way of driving is often seen. This bad habit gave birth to the shameful expression “Iyo no Hayamagari”, which roughly translates to "People in Ehime behind the steering wheel turns right instantly" (Iyo refers to the old name of Ehime). My husband often comments that my personality is hasty, but also optimistic and positive.

  • Dissection of the Haiku Tradition
http://fayaoyagi.wordpress.com/essay/ Dissection of the Haiku Tradition: Ten Short Essays on Japanese Kigo by Fay Aoyagi Flowers and Plants In this series of essay, I will discuss one of the traditional elements of haiku: the kigo. I would like to share the view of a non-traditionalist. My focus will be on how I use a kigo when I write a haiku in English. Though many of the samples I use will be the work of Japanese haiku poets, my main purpose is not to compare Japanese-language haiku with English-language haiku. Also, my intention is not to tell you how you should write a haiku. I believe in diversity and I trust the voice of a haiku poet. I hope that my approach to kigo will help you deepen your haiku experiences. This first article is about flowers and plants. I plan to write future installments about animals and birds, moon and wind, and holidays and observances. Comments are welcome, but I am not planning to seek haiku submissions for my articles. In American haiku, the linkage between nature and human has been emphasized. In most published haiku in the United States, the poet is invisible; one remains only an observer of nature. Many American haiku poets seem to believe that haiku should be a subdued sumi-e or a quiet still life. But haiku can be as colorful as van Gough’s paintings or as abstract as the work of Picasso. The core of my haiku is my emotion as a woman, as a Japanese person, and an immigrant.
