  • Short Communication Health and Nutrition Content Claims on Australian Fast-Food Websites
Public Health Nutrition: 20(4), 571–577 doi:10.1017/S1368980016002561 Short Communication Health and nutrition content claims on Australian fast-food websites Lyndal Wellard1,*, Alexandra Koukoumas2, Wendy L Watson1 and Clare Hughes1 1Cancer Programs Division, Cancer Council NSW, 153 Dowling St, Woolloomooloo, NSW 2011, Australia: 2Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, University of Wollongong, Wollongong, NSW, Australia Submitted 17 March 2016: Final revision received 3 August 2016: Accepted 15 August 2016: First published online 17 October 2016 Abstract Objective: To determine the extent that Australian fast-food websites contain nutrition content and health claims, and whether these claims are compliant with the new provisions of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (‘the Code’). Design: Systematic content analysis of all web pages to identify nutrition content and health claims. Nutrition information panels were used to determine whether products with claims met Nutrient Profiling Scoring Criteria (NPSC) and qualifying criteria, and to compare them with the Code to determine compliance. Setting: Australian websites of forty-four fast-food chains including meals, bakery, ice cream, beverage and salad chains. Subjects: Any products marketed on the websites using health or nutrition content claims. Results: Of the forty-four fast-food websites, twenty (45 %) had at least one claim. A total of 2094 claims were identified on 371 products, including 1515 nutrition content (72 %) and 579 health claims (28 %). Five fast-food products with health (5 %) and 157 products with nutrition content claims (43 %) did not meet the requirements of the Code to allow them to carry such claims. Conclusions: New provisions in the Code came into effect in January 2016 after a 3-year transition.

April|May|June 2014 Number 100 TGI FRIDAY’S SELLS: KUA ‘AINA. This creative, fast-casual Pg. 1 restaurant concept was established in Oahu, Hawaii in 1975 by Terry Thompson. ON THE MOVE: There are three restaurants still owned by the Thompson family in Hawaii and over Pg. 2, 3 20 Kua 'Aina restaurants operating under license in Japan. POTPOURRI: They serve lava-grilled sandwiches, unique burgers and salads in a friendly and Pg. 4 escapist atmosphere, with authentic Hawaiian-style décor and uniforms and the KUA’AINA: guests are served with the Aloha spirit. The name, pronounced koo-a eye-na, translates as "back country" but usually used to describe a country bumpkin. For Pg. 1 native Hawaiians, it refers to those who respect and keep the spirit of the ancient lands alive. PIE IN THE RUSSIAN SKY: It’s always nice to write about those achievers in our industry that have been long Pg. 4 time friends of ours. In this case – it’s Michael Gottlieb. Kau 'Aina was launched in the UK in 2011 by Edward Bardos and Paul de Francisi. Following on that success, they OCEAN BASKET: are opening a 2nd location this September. Edward and Paul have been joined by Pg. 5 Michael Gottlieb as the UK Kua 'Aina Non-Executive Chairman. The team plans to open 8-10 locations in London over the next few years and anticipate future growth in CAFFÉ BENE: the rest of the UK and Europe. Pg. 4 LONDON EXPECTED TO BE TOP INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION IN 2014. In the recently released MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index, it appears London will again - for the third time in four years - have the most international visitors of any major city worldwide.

Unprecedented levels of availability and aggressive marketing of unhealthy foods are key drivers of obesity and diet-related conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dental caries and some cancers. Australia has some of the highest obesity rates in the world: nearly two-thirds of Australian adults and one in four children are overweight or obese.1 Poor diet is estimated to account for at least 25,000 Australian deaths each year.2 The Australian Dietary Guidelines provide sensible advice on how to promote health and well-being by recommending that Australians eat a wide variety of nutritious foods from five groups that include fruit, vegetables, grain foods, lean proteins and dairy. They also recommend drinking plenty of water.3 Unfortunately, fewer than one in 10 Australians consumes a diet in line with these recommendations.4 Key problems with the Australian diet include inadequate consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds and fibre, and excess consumption of unhealthy, often highly-processed, foods.
