Design by A+B Studio. 009 Foreword ľŜĔŭĝŬūǜĚĤĔĩĖŮĩŬ We Need To Talk ŧĔŨǜēŹŤčŃĴőũŤē Exhibition Foreword ijĔŻŴĴĖǘŴįŦżĖēĶŻč Isabelle de la Bruyere Director, Christie’s, Middle East ŒŻijĔĽũťŤęİĐēijĔŲŬĔĖĔżũŤĔŐ³ĔżĖēijĉŗŴēģİŻē´ŗĴő ƿĜ Edge of Arabia is internationally recognised as a ĴŀĔőũŤēŮřŤēŹťŐēİŻİĤēĆŵńŽŝťĜŽĝŤēĚżŭřŤē pioneering art project that has shed new light on the ēIJűŦġũŻŴǁ ĚŻįŵőĹŤēĚżĖĴőŤēĚšťũũŤēŽŘĚŘĔŝġŤēŴ contemporary art and culture of Saudi Arabia. This ȕĪĖĴťŤĚŘįĔŲŤēĴżŔĚũōŭũŤēůIJŲŤĚėĹŭŤĔĖŃĴőũŤē exhibition marks another important milestone for ŦŨĔĽŤēŽŘĔŝġŤēİŲĽũŤēĚŲĤŮŨĔũŲŨŴēİŻİĤēĵĔĥŬēǁ this non-profit organisation, and indeed the general ŪĜİŜźIJŤēŪűǜēŃĴőũŤēǁ ųŬēĢżĩĖȕĚŝʼnŭũťŤ cultural landscape of the region, as this is the most ŧŵżŤēŹĝĨĚŻįŵőĹŤēĚżĖĴőŤēĚšťũũŤēŽŘųũżōŭĜ significant show of Saudi contemporary art ever held ĴŀĔőũŤēźįŵőĹŤēŮřŤēĵēĴĖǞ in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. ģİŻē³ţĔŲũŐįȕĴżėŠijŴĴĹĖȕĶżĝĹŻĴŠijēįŦŀēŵĜŴ It is with enormous pleasure that Christie’s ĔŭŬŴĔőĜİŲļȕ2010ŧĔőŤēIJŭũŘ³ĔżĖēijĉŗŴē continues to support Edge of Arabia. Since 2010, our ȕŽńĔũŤēŧĔőŤēŽŘĔŲżŘĔũĖȕěĔĨĔĥŭŤēŮŨİŻİőŤē collaboration has seen many successes, including last ŏĴǁ ėĜİŜūĔŠŶŵĝĹũŤēĚőżŘijĚżŭŘţĔũŐĉǁ ĚĝĸŒżėŨ year’s sale of six outstanding artworks generously ŒĸŵĝŤēŪŐįǁ ŦĤĉŮŨĔŲżŬĔŭŘĵĴĖĉņőĖĆĔĭĹĖĔŲĖ donated by some of their most prominent artists in ŦšļİŜŴĚšťũũŤēŽŘūŵŭřŤēŪżťőĜĦŨĔŬĴĖŽŘ order to support the expansion of an arts education śēŵĸĉŽŘŹĹŭĜǘĚżĭŻijĔĜ ƻĚʼnĩŨħĔĥŭŤēēIJű programme in the Kingdom. The success of this ģİŻē´ĕĔĹŠēŽŘŪűĔĸŴȕĚżŭřŤēŊĸŴǜēśĴĽŤē memorable sale marked an historic moment in the ŦėŜŮŨĔũĤĔĖĔĥŐēŴēĴżėŠĔżŤŴįǁ ĔŘēĴĝŐē³ĔżĖēijĉŗŴē Middle Eastern art market, and helped Edge of Arabia ŪŤĔőŤēĆĔĩŬēŚťĝĭŨŽŘĚżŭřŤēţĔũŐǘēŽőŨĔĤ gain greater international recognition and admiration among art collectors from around the world. We Need To Talk 010 011 Conversation ŮżĖĔŨęijŴĔĩŨ Conversation Between ŽŘĚĝřŤĞŬĔšŘ Ţĩń ŢŤıŽŭŨĞėťňźIJŤēĞŬĉħŧ MH: You asked me to! It was a very nice gesture and ŮĝťĖĔĝĸŮřżĝĸ Stephen Stapleton (Founder, Edge of Arabia) ĪũĹĜĔŲŬǜŽŤĚŀĴřŤēůIJűĚĨĔĜǞİżőĸĔŬĉŴŚʼnťŤēĚŻĔŔ I’m grateful for the opportunity because it gives me Ŵ and ŧǜēŽŭňŵŤŦĖĔŝũŤēŽŘĔđżļŽʼnŐĉūĉŽŤ the chance to give something back to my hometown. ŎŘĔĨİũĩŨ Mohammed Hafiz (Curator) ĚŘŵŤĊŨĴżŔţēĶĜǘ³ŪżŝŤē´Ŵĉ³ŽŭřŤēŞǁ ĹŭũŤē´Ěǁ ũŲŨūčǁ The curator is a position that is not yet recognised in ŽŘźįŵőĹŤēĴŀĔőũŤēŮřťŤĵijĔĖŧĔŐŃĴőŨţŴĉųŬčħŧ Mohammed Hafiz: This is the first major public ēIJűŽŘĔŨİŝĜŃĴőũŤēēIJűĵĴĩŻūĉŦŨćŴĚŻįŵőĹŤēŽŘ Saudi Arabia, and I hope this exhibition can change ŞťʼnŭŻūĉŽőżėʼnŤēŮũŘŢŤIJŤȕĚŻįŵőĹŤēĚżĖĴőŤēĚšťũũŤē exhibition of Saudi contemporary art in Saudi Arabia, ĚřťĝĭũŤēĴōŭŤēěĔŲĤŴķijįĉūĉŵűŪżŝŠźijŴİŘůĔĥĜǞēǁ that. My role is to look at the multiple perspectives of ĚĠįĔĩŨŴĉijēŵĨţǙĬŮŨ so it’s about starting off with a conversation. İŻĴŘįĴĸţǙĬŮŨĔŲŭżĖĔŨŽŘŊĖijĉūĉŴŮżŬĔŭřťŤ the artists and to find a story that runs through them. ŽŘĔżĸĔĸĉēijŴįēĴĬČŨūŵŻįŵőĹŤēūŵŬĔŭřŤēĘőŤİŝťŘƻ Recently, Saudi artists have played a very important ƻĚŁŜĴšĝĖĉūĉİŻijĉȕ ęİĤŮŨ źįŵőĸŮňēŵŨŽĝřŁĖŴǁ As a Saudi national from Jeddah, I want to create a ēŵŤŴĔŭĝŘȕĴėŠĉĚŻĴĨŴħĔĝřŬĔĖȕěĔļĔŝŭŤēśǙňčŹťŐŒżĥĽĝŤē role in encouraging more open discussions about a ēIJűŚťĝĭŻŴŽťĩũŤēijŵŲũĥŤĔĖĚŝżĠŴĚťŀŹťŐūŵšĜ narrative that is relevant to the local audience, and ŽŘŴĉŪŲŭňŴŽŘūĔŠūčĚŝżĽŤēŒżńēŵũŤēŮŨǁ ƻ̝ŝĸ range of issues, both at home and abroad. I personally ŶĴĬǜēţŴİŤēŽŘŃĴőũťŤŪżŝŤēęĴōŬŮŐĔŨĔũĜŹĩŭũŤēǁ this is very different to how a curator might approach ijŵŲũĥŤēůĔĥĜĚżŤŴČĹũŤēĺĩĖǁ ĔżŁĭļĴőļĉĔŬĉŴģijĔĭŤēƻ feel a sense of responsibility towards the audience and ŮřťŤųĝŘĴőŨŽŘȕĔżėĹŬȕĔġŻİĨţēĶŻǘźįŵőĹŤēijŵŲũĥŤĔŘ an exhibition abroad. The audience here is relatively ţǙĬŮŨŽŭŘŦũŐŹťŐŒťňēİŜijŵŲũĥŤēǁ ǁŦőťŘŮżŬĔŭřŤēŴ the artists. The audience might have seen an artwork ȕĚŐĔʼnĝĸǞēijİŝĖȕŃŴĴőŤēŦőĤŹŤēĔŭőŘİŻĔũŨĴŀĔőũŤē new to contemporary art, which means we have the ŮřŤĔĖųĝŜǙŐijŵʼnŬūĉĔŭżťŐŽŕėŭŻŮšŤŴĚřżĩŁŤēųĜĆēĴŜǁ printed in the newspaper but we need to take it to the ŮĩŬĔŬijŵŲũĤŪŲĜŒżńēŵŨijĔżĝĬēŹŤēŴȕţĔŭũŤēĚťŲĸǁ responsibility of making the show as accessible as next level. ēIJűŚĽĝšŻţēĵĔŨijŵŲũĤŒŨŮřŤēĴėŐŦŀēŵĝŤēŹŤēŗİŲŬ possible. We have to choose topics that are close to our įĔ ǁŝŭŤēĕĔĥŐčęijĔĠ菍ē忍ŴŽĐĴũŤēijēŵĩŤēŮŨŏŵŭŤē audience’s concerns, and not just try to please critics. ğİĩĝŤēŴĴżšřĝŤēŴŦŐĔřĝŤēŹŤēijŵŲũĥŤēūēŵŭőŤēēIJűŵŐİŻŴ The title of the exhibition, ‘We Need to Talk’ invites the ŪŲʼnżĩŨŽŘĔĖĔĥŻēŪűĴżĠĊĜĚżřżŠŮŐ audience to react, to think for themselves and to discuss ĚĠǙĠŴŹŜǙĝĜĚĩŭĤĉĚĠǙĠŹŤēŃĴőũŤēŪżĹŝĜŪĝŻķķ SS: The exhibition is split into three rooms and three themes. how they can positively influence the world around them. ȗğǙġŤēŧĔĹŜǜēůIJűŹťŐĔŭőťʼnĜūĉŢŭšũŻŦŲŘěĔũżĜ Can you tell us about these sections? ȗźĵēĶřĝĸēūēŵŭŐŵűŦűķķ Stephen Stapleton: Is it a provocative title? ŒŨēŵťŐĔřĝŻūĉŮżŠijĔĽũŤēŮżŬĔŭřŤēŦŠŮŨĔŭėťňİŝŤħŧ MH: We asked all participating artists to react to the ǁŦĝĩĜ ěĔđŘğǙĠŮũń³ijŴĔĩĝŬūĉĘĥŻ´ŃĴőũŤēūēŵŭŐ title, We Need to Talk, within three categories: ğİĩĝŤĔŘźĵēĶřĝĸēūēŵŭŐĚĖĔġũĖůijĔėĝŐēijİĥŻǘēİĖĉƻ ħŧ MH: No. Talking openly about issues is a ŃĴőũŤēŽŘĚŀĔĬ ƻĚĨĔĹŨĔŲŭŨŦŠ ŒũĝĥŨŦŠŽŘĚżĸĔĸĉęĶżŠijŽűŦĐĔĹũŤēņőĖŮŐĚŻĴĩĖ fundamental characteristic of any modern society, and ĢŻįĔĨǜēśǙňĎĖĉİĖİŜijŵŲũĥŤēūĉĔũŠȕĴŀĔőŨ people are already talking. ŽńĔũŤē Past ĴńĔĩŤē Present ūĉǙŨćŒũĝĥũŤēěĔŝėňŦŠŹŤēŃĴőũŤēēIJűųƻ ĤŵĝŻŴǁ This exhibition is a call to all levels of society that ŦėŝĝĹũŤē Future İĖǙŘĚŻĴŁŐŴĚŻijĔŅĨĚŝŻĴʼnĖğİĩĝŤēŹťŐŪŲőĥĽŻ we need to talk in a civilised and modern manner. ŒŜēŵŨĴėŐĔĥŻijİĜěĉİĖİŜĚŠĴĩŤēūĉĔũĖȕğİĩŻūĉŢŤIJŤ It simply has to happen. It has been happening ŮŨȕŽŤĔĝŤĔėŘŚĩŁŤēŽŘēĴĬČŨŴŽŐĔũĝĤǞēŧǙŐǞē increasingly on social networking sites and lately in ŗİŲĖŪŲřŤēĚťŲĸĚżŭĖŹŤēĚĤĔĩĖĔŭŬĉěĴőļŴ I felt that we needed an accessible structure like this ĚżŭřŤēŒżńēŵũŤēĻĔŝŭŤēēIJűţŴĔŭĝŻūĉŽőżėʼnŤē newspapers, so it is a natural step for this dialogue to ųőŨŦŐĔřĝŤēŹťŐijŵŲũĥŤēĢĩŻŮǁ żőŨįĴĸĆĔĽŬēǁ in order to create a kind of narrative that the local develop around art. ŽńĔũŤēĴŲōŻĢżĩĖęĊĽŭŤēĢŻİĨİťĖĚŻįŵőĹŤĔŘ audience could engage with.
