Be BOLD About Our Faith

Year of Faith Celebration! The U.S. bishops have released a statement encouraging Catholics to make going to confession a significant part of their spiritual lives and to use this Lent as an opportunity to do so…The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God's boundless mercy. Not only does it free us from our sins but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. We are liberated to be forgivers. We obtain new insight into the words of the Prayer of St. Francis: "It is in pardoning that we are pardoned." Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to the Church. The Sacrament of Penance is God's gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven. In confession we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. It is a holy moment in which we place ourselves in his presence and honestly acknowledge our sins, especially mortal sins. With absolution, we are reconciled to God and the Church. The Sacrament helps us stay close to the truth that we cannot live without God. "In him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). “A Man for all Seasons”

February 15 at 7PM in the Parish Life Center

Adapted by and Constance Willis from Bolt's hit stage play, A Man for All Seasons stars , triumphantly repeating his stage role as Sir , a 16th‐century Lord Chancellor of . The crux of the film is Catholic More's refusal to acknowledge King Henry VIII ()'s break from the church in order to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne Boleyn (an unbilled ). Sir Thomas willingly goes to the chopping block and resigned rather than taking an Oath of Supremacy declaring Henry VIII Supreme Head of the Church of England and sacrificing his ideals. The film portray More as a tragic hero, motivated by his devout Roman Catholic faith and envied by rivals. He is also deeply loved by his family and respected by the common people. Director retains the play's verbosity without sacrificing the film's strong sense of visuals. The impeccably chosen cast includes Wendy Hiller as Sir Thomas' likably contentious wife Alice, John Hurt as the deceitful Richard Rich, Orson Welles as a dour Cardinal Woolsey, Leo McKern as the ambitious , and Susannah York as More's daughter Margaret. A Man for All Seasons won six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, as well as seven British Film . ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi (adapted)
