Trinity Arts Centre April to June 2018 Brochure Trinity Arts Centre Gainsborough April to June 2018 Theatre - Cinema Dance Music Thank you! There wouldn’t be much point us being here if it wasn’t for you; and what a great start to 2018 you have given us. Sell out shows, extra film screenings, a new youth theatre and lots of compliments about our excellent team of staff and volunteers. We are lucky to have such support, and I hope we can continue to develop the theatre in ways which keep you coming back for more. We don’t always get everything right, but I am delighted that I have received valuable feedback about where we can improve, and you can be confident that we are working hard to improve those areas. We have a great Easter lined up for you, starting with ‘The Easter Bunny’s Eggs Factor’. This is a fantastic, family show, particularly suitable for 2-7 year old's, brought to you by the same team behind our sell out Santa shows last Christmas. You can sing-a-long with ‘Old MacDonald Had A Farm’, ‘The Grand Old Duke Of York’ and more, then meet the Easter Bunny to collect a free chocolate treat for every child! Our live shows offer something for everyone, from the soaring sax solos of Snake Davis to the music of The Carpenters, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Who, Carole King and James Taylor. Live theatre returns with Baroque Theatre and their new production ‘Twist’, a rip-roaring comedy thriller that will have you guessing until the shocking end! Add in another strong cinema programme to the mix (with plenty of award winners and nominees) then I hope there will be plenty to keep you coming back for more. See you soon! • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

  • Ghost Stories, Dir. by Andy Nyman, Jeremy Dyson (Lionsgate Films, 2018)
The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 17 (Autumn 2018) Ghost Stories, dir. by Andy Nyman, Jeremy Dyson (Lionsgate Films, 2018) Adapted by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman from their 2010 stage play of the same name, Ghost Stories is an affectionate and self-reflexive homage to the British portmanteau-horror subgenre, and is as unabashedly melodramatic as it is deeply unsettling. The plot centres on the character Professor Goodman (played by Nyman), a parapsychologist and professional cynic who is compelled to review three unsolved cases: a night watchman encounters a poltergeist while on duty in an abandoned asylum for women; a teenage driver has an accident in the woods; and an affluent financier is haunted by the spirit of his unborn child. Male anguish bubbles under the surface and, as the cases unfold, Goodman begins to question his lack of faith in the supernatural, which, we are told, is a reaction against his strict, Jewish upbringing. Although we see very little of it, the spectre of Goodman’s childhood haunts the story like a fourth case. At the start of the film, we see a memory of his sister being violently thrown out of the family home by their father for being in a relationship with a South-Asian man. Goodman bears witness but is unable or unwilling to intervene. Not only does this flashback foreshadow the finale; it also emphasises the importance of accountability in each of the cases. Anxieties about fathers and fatherhood abound in Ghost Stories (the first case features a father consumed by the guilt he feels about not visiting his hospitalised daughter, who suffers from locked-in syndrome), while the text itself is equally haunted by its literary and cinematic ancestors.

  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT Solved! the Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “Skypark”…
2 MAR 18 5 APR 18 1 | 2 MAR 18 - 5 APR 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT Solved! The Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “SkyPark”… Huge thanks to a number of you out there who sent me a link to the BBC News article that finally puts the issue I’ve been bleating on about for months (see Filmhouse December and February monthly programme introductions) to bed. Turns out the eight cars that have been trapped in the failed then abandoned automated car park (which is currently being dismantled behind our offices) since it closed in the early 2000s were only ever old bangers brought in to test the automatic parking machinery! Phew! Glad to have gotten to the bottom of that one… Our March programme, as is customary for the time of year, is replete with Oscar® hopefuls, it now being the turn of Lady Bird, Phantom Thread (in 70mm!), A Fantastic Woman, Palme d’Or winner The Square, and The Shape of Water, which continues from February. Awards season is, though, nearly over, as is evidenced by a slew of new films too new to qualify for consideration this year: Lynne Ramsay’s brilliant You Were Never Really Here; Warwick (Samson & Delilah) Thornton’s stunning Aussie ‘western’, Sweet Country, and Wes Anderson’s fabulous Isle of Dogs. And you know what, looking at that list, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I’m not entirely sure I have ever seen a better line-up of new release cinema, at any one cinema, ever.
