YMCA of Central 144th Report To Our Community

2008 Annual Report Letter to our Community

Dear Friends,

A red ribbon across the front cover seemed especially appropriate for the YMCA’s 144th Report to our Community. Following more than two years of fund raising, extensive renovations and a fair amount of new construction, it seems 2008 was filled with celebrations… and ribbon cutting ceremonies. In fact, during an eight month span beginning in May, we celebrated the completion of three major projects — one at each branch (O.K., technically the last was held in 2009, but just barely!). We are thrilled with the results. We hope you are too.

Think about all that we have accomplished. More than 500 donors contributed $7.8 million, allowing us to invest $13.4 million in our three branches. The result: three magnificent branches that are, for all intents and purposes, brand new. Our members and our 41 communities deserve nothing less. And we thank all our mission partners, whose generous support made all of this possible.

As we have said many times, what is most important is the impact that these improvements will have on the people we serve. This was central to our Vision 2010 Strategic Plan, and we are pleased to see so much of that plan coming to fruition. Membership is on the rise. More important, member service is on the rise, as indicated by feedback that we have been actively soliciting. And most important, especially during these challenging economic times, we are serving more people in need than ever before. We thank all of you for providing the resources needed to make this so, and we thank all who contributed in so many ways to the remarkable year that was 2008.

Sincerely yours, Annual Recognition Event

October 2, 2008 was a day of celebration at the Central Community Branch. This date marked both the 144th Annual Recognition Event to honor youth and adult members who contribute in extraordinary ways to their communities, and the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony comemerating the completion of the Central Community Branch project. The program was highlighted by a special visit and address by Neil Nicoll, current President & CEO of the YMCA of the USA and former President/CEO of the YMCA of Greater Worcester. Neil was greeted warmly by dozens of friends, members, former Board Chairs and others. He, in turn, shared insight regarding the current state of the YMCA across the country, and reflected fondly on his 12 years as the leader of our YMCA.

Chairmen’s Award In 2004, Gene DeFeudis accepted an invitation to join the YMCA Board of Directors. It was an easy decision for the 30 year member of the YMCA. Having grown up with eight siblings on Worcester’s East Side, Gene has a deep appreciation for the personal attention and mentorship the YMCA provides. When it came time to undertake the $6.5 million “Strength of the Team” Capital Campaign for the Worcester branches, Gene knew board involvement would be crucial to achieve our ambitious goal. His pledge of $500,000 to the Central Community Branch is the largest gift from an individual in the history of our YMCA. His rationale was simple, “I believe in the value of investing in Worcester’s Main South area and the Central Branch is critical in the transformation of this community.” With theimpact of Gene’s gift and the many others that followed the Campaign took off, ultimately exceeding it’s goal. Our dramatically improved facilities allow the YMCA to fulfill our mission better than before.

3 Annual Recognition Event Youth Volunteer Awards: Boroughs: Tyler Brunnett

Tyler has volunteered many hours to the Boroughs Youth & Teen Department as Youth Sports Coach and a Leadership Development Participant during his 8th grade year. He comes early and stays late even on Saturdays to ensure everything runs smoothly. Tyler has shown tremendous growth, transforming to a leader and role model amongst his peers before our very eyes. Central: Nicholas Holman

Nick has been a Counselor in Training at the Central Community Branch since June of 2007. During this time Nick has been responsible for assisting staff in supervising and leading activities for children 7 through 12 in our license after-school program and summer camps. In addition to his work at the YMCA, Nick is highly involved in this community. He is active in St. Peter’s Church Youth Group, a Boy Scout in Troup 63, a great scholar at University Park and a member of his school’s cross country team. The positive and professional relationships he has built with supervisors, coworkers, children and their families will last him a lifetime. Greendale: Taylor Dupree

As a freshman football player at Doherty High School, Taylor enjoys being active both in school and outside of it. He has been involved with the YMCA for many years from School’s Out and teen programs to the Leadership Development Program now for three years. Taylor hopes to be able to contribute more to the YMCA and to his community in the future.

Victoria Pitney

At 13 years old, Victoria is already a highly professional swim instructor. Her ability and confidence far surpass her age and the extra support she gives as an aquatics volunteer allows instructors to give each child more individual time. This past summer Victoria spent two weeks as a Leadership Development Participant and another three weeks volunteering 40 hours per week in the aquatics department. She has helped teach hundreds of children how to swim and served as a role model with a positive attitude that is contagious.

Stephanie Prashad

Stephanie has been picking her way through the YMCA since 2000. She has been in the Leaders Club for four years, a Counselor in Training at Camp Harrington in 2006 and attended the 2008 YMCA Europe Festival in Prague. Beyond her work with the YMCA Stephanie is also involved in the National Honor Society, Students Against Drunk Driving (SAAD), the Mock Trial Team, the Science Club and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. As if all of this isn’t enough, as a senior at St. Peter Marian High School, Stephanie is also currently the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. She hopes to continue her work at the YMCA throughout college and beyond. 4 Award Recipients Adult Volunteer Awards:

Boroughs: Joanne Treistman

When most people are faced with moving 1,700 miles away they tend to take things OFF their “to do” list. Not Joanne. As a member since 1983, Joanne offered herself as a volunteer to the Boroughs Family Branch from the day it opened its doors and has been a member of the Board of Governors since 2005. She has been a devoted donor and fundraiser with the Strong Kids Campaign and has even forgone birthday gifts, instead asking friends and family to make donations to the YMCA. Joanne is passionate about the YMCA and brings our story wherever she goes.

Christopher Bramley When Chris was invited to serve as the Honorary Chair of the Boroughs Branch Capital Campaign it was initially a ceremonial role. He changed that. From the beginning Chris attended every possible meeting he could and would often be seen at a 7 a.m. campaign meeting and again at a YMCA function or event later that same evening – often accompanied by his wonderful wife Charlotte. He was always willing to change his schedule for the Y and played a key role in securing the lead gift of $100,000 from Avidia Bank.

Central: Margaret “Peg” Naylor It is not often that we find someone who is so determined and committed during times of great change. Peg was instrumental in giving feedback and developing solutions to the complex challenges faced during the renovations at the Central Branch. As a member for 25 years Peg has also served on the branch Board of Governors and Properties Committee and is a consistent supporter of the Annual Strong Kids Campaign. She is a great advocate and ambassador for the YMCA and her commitment is truly what makes the Central Branch a special place within the Main South community.

Greendale: William “Denny” Smith Denny has been an active member of the Greendale Family Branch for more than 30 years. He has served 16 years as a volunteer in everything from fitness classes to serving on the Board of Governors to the many campaigns throughout the Association. Most recently Denny singlehandedly rallied support to secure funds for the flag pole at the Greendale branch. He is a constant breath of fresh air.

5 Annual Recognition Event Diversity & Inclusion Awards:

Boroughs: Christie D’Amico Last December the Boroughs Family Branch was full of sights, sounds and smells from all over the world. The “Around the World, Around the YMCA” event featured holiday exhibits that highlighted the many cultures that exist within the Boroughs YMCA. The success of this event was largely due to Christie. As the Early Childhood Coordinator at Boroughs, Christie sees that not only should our children be culturally nurtured but so should their families and staff. She is also instrumental in Supporting Opportunities for All through Recreation (S.O.A.R.),an inclusion program for individuals with special needs. Christie wants everyone to feel embraced when they walk through our doors and is the true embodiment of our mission.

Central: Reverend Dr. Louis Bond Reverend Bond has been a Central Branch volunteer for ten years. He has been instrumental in turning what used to be an annual Health Fair into a fully function- ing program that provides yearly outreach, medical services and support systems to a community with unique needs and challenges. In his tireless work within the community Reverend Bond co-facilitates a monthly meeting of men transitioning from incarceration, hosts weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and is closing the racial and ethnic health care disparities that exist. The Men’s Health Program has brought awareness, resources and networking opportunities into this community. We are honored to have Reverend Bond as part of our family.

Greendale: Quinsigamond Community College – “Project Triumph” The mission of “Project Triumph” is provide post-secondary training and education to individuals with disabilities. This was a perfect fit for the Greendale Family Branch and our mission of developing spirit, mind and body for all. Through mentorship in the areas of member relations, service delivery and administration, students were able to garner a wide range of professional experiences that they can use in the future. This relationship helped to nurture an environment that reflects respects and celebrates our differences and embraces the richness of diversity.

6 New Beginnings for All Three Branches

Planning and executing one Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is a major undertaking. The YMCA of Central Massachusetts pulled off this feat not once...nce... notnot twice...twice... but threethree ttimesimes in 8 months!months!

The generous support of many donors helped make this possible. The centerpiece of our fund raising efforts each year is the annual fund. Now known as the Strong Kids Campaign, we raised $444,589 in pledges last year — a new record. We thank all of our donors for your continued support in our ef- forts to enrich the lives of those we serve. These funds made it possible for hundreds of children to attend summer camp; for dozens of families to afford high quality early education programs; for dozens of teens to participate in character-building programs such as Minority Achievers, Y-Lead, Youth and Government, and Spartacus; and for hundreds of individuals and families to afford YMCA membership through Y-Access finan- cial assistance. Just as the YMCA of Central Massachusetts has served multiple generations, gifts that were created on our behalf years ago continue to provide support today — well past the lifetimes of the original donors. This has happened because of our donors’ generosity and the use of a charitable giving arrangement known as the endowed gift — sometimes called the perpetual gift.

Chet and Sylvia Caswell Establish Endowment for Underprivileged Youth Chester F. Caswell, Jr. traces his YMCA roots back to his earliest childhood memories. “I remember coming down to the Y with my dad when I was just a little boy,” he recalls. Growing up, Chet enjoyed swimming at the Y most of all, and he has particular fondness for the time he spent at both Camp Morgan and Camp Blanchard. “Merrill J. Durdan worked at Camp Morgan in the summer, and as a swim instructor during the rest of the year,” Chet recalls. “He was a legendary figure at the YMCA for people of my generation.” In 1994, Chet became a third generation Chairman of the YMCA Board of Directors, following both his father and his maternal grandfather, Curtis Blanchard. He continues his involvement as an active member of the YMCA Advisory Board. Many years ago, Chet and his wife, Sylvia, became members of the Heritage Society by including the YMCA in their will. This is the way most people become members. More recently the Caswells decided that their passion for the YMCA of Central Massachusetts warranted a more substantial commitment. After carefully reviewing their finances and looking at various giving options, they decided to establish The Caswell Family Endowment for Camp Blanchard through a gift of $100,000. “Our thoughts on this were very straightforward,” Chet explains. “My life has been impacted tremendously by the YMCA. I want to ensure that future generations—especially those of limited means—can enjoy the same healthy, rewarding experiences that I had.” The YMCA of Central Massachusetts is deeply grateful to the Caswells for their generosity. Through their gift, many young people who would otherwise be unable, will experience the joys and life-enriching benefits of attending Camp Blanchard. “This is a gift from the heart,” explains Chet. “We know the YMCA will use these funds wisely… I hope others of my generation will want to follow suit and make their own legacy gift to this very special organization.”

The Caswell Family Endowment for Camp Blanchard In recognition of Curtis Blanchard’s many years of dedicated service to area children in need, we are pleased to establish The Caswell Family Endowment for Camp Blanchard. Honoring the memory of my grandfather, Mr. Blanchard, and following our own interest in ensuring that present and future generations of children be afforded the opportunity to enjoy the special joy that summer camp provides, it is our wish that proceeds generated by this endowed fund be used to provide scholarships for children from families with financial hardship in the Greater Worcester area.

A Gift that Keeps Growing

Making a charitable gift designated for endowment funds is a wonderful way to provide financial support to the YMCA’s mission or activities, – and also provide you with certain tax benefits. An endowment program is a way of allocating specific, designated gifts to an investment fund. This fund is invested to earn income each year, and as the principal grows, so does the income.

The ever-growing income is used to support our work at the YMCA, but the principal always remains invested to perpetuate the fund. Endowment gifts to us can be either outright or deferred. Even though you may be retired, or are making plans to retire, consider establishing an endowment fund with the YMCA that will keep those funds working even after your lifetime. We welcome the opportunity to discuss your ideas for the fund and help you determine the best way to accomplish your goals. Ask us how we might work together to develop an endowment fund for our mutual benefit.

If you are interested in establishing a new endowment fund, contributing to an existing fund, or simply learning about various legacy gift opportunities, please contact Ronald G. Dufault, Vice President Financial Development at 508-755-6101 Ext. 244. 17 YMCA of Central Massachusetts Fiscal year ending September 30, 2008
