Welcome to Copenhagen! The Organizing Committee in Copenhagen and the International Scientific Committee of the XXIII FESSH Congress had four important goals: A high standard of scientific content; an optimized E-poster presentation; the inclusion of some more unusual topics and, a focus on the younger generation of hand surgeons. We hope that we have succeeded. A high number of invited lecturers – several coming from other parts of the world and working in other medical specialties - have unselfishly accepted to honour the Congress with their presence and presentations, despite the extremely limited financial support that we could offer. The number of abstracts submitted was higher than ever. Regretfully, although we opened one more lecture room than planned, we were forced to limit the number of free oral presentations. The “good old days” when we could stroll around, peacefully browsing the posters are gone; we have to adapt to a digitalized world. We have optimized the E-poster utility through careful selection and categorization with an increased number of reading stations and availability online. There is a special session for young hand surgeons entitled “Hand Surgery at the Frontier”, as well as a session of free papers “from young hand surgeons to young hand surgeons”. The topic for the Instructional Course is “Fractures of the Hand and Carpus”. When selecting this topic, although we were primarily thinking of our younger colleagues, we believe that senior experts will benefit from it. The course book was realized in a perfect collaboration with our publishers Thieme and with the generous contributions of many prominent experts. Of course, all these achievements would have been impossible without the support and contributions of the medical industry. And so, thank you to the submitters, lecturers, supporters and participants… We hope that you will enjoy your stay in the wonderful city of Copenhagen and, when you leave, that you will feel enriched in your knowledge and passion of our fantastic medical subspecialty. Copenhagen welcomes you! Michel Boeckstyns president of the congress 4 WELCOME MESSAGE SECRetaRY GENERAL OF FESSH Dear Colleagues, On behalf of FESSH Council we would like to invite you to participate in the XXIII FESSH Congress in Copenhagen „Working for the future“. The annual congress of FESSH is the largest hand surgery meeting in Europe with a very interesting programme with the Instructional Course on „Fractures of the hand and carpus“, round tables and invited lectures from all over the world. Future is not only new techniques, but also the next generation and some sessions are specially devoted to young hand surgeons with lectures and free papers. Teaching and training is one of the most important goals and in order to make all contents available also after the meeting, for the first time, the presentations will be streamed online and uploaded on the website. During the congress we will also have the Delegates Assembly and I sincerely hope that all of you are going to join this central event of our Federation. You are the one making the FESSH and we look forward to your ideas and proposals. The president of the congress, Michel Boeckstyns, the Organising Committee and the Scientific Committee have been working hard in the last years to prepare a wonderful event in a wonderful city and we are looking forward to your participation. HOLOCAUST ARCHAEOLOGY: ARCHAEOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO LANDSCAPES OF NAZI GENOCIDE AND PERSECUTION BY CAROLINE STURDY COLLS A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham September 2011 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The landscapes and material remains of the Holocaust survive in various forms as physical reminders of the suffering and persecution of this period in European history. However, whilst clearly defined historical narratives exist, many of the archaeological remnants of these sites remain ill-defined, unrecorded and even, in some cases, unlocated. Such a situation has arisen as a result of a number of political, social, ethical and religious factors which, coupled with the scale of the crimes, has often inhibited systematic search. This thesis will outline how a non- invasive archaeological methodology has been implemented at two case study sites, with such issues at its core, thus allowing them to be addressed in terms of their scientific and historical value, whilst acknowledging their commemorative and religious significance.

  • Basques in the Americas from 1492 To1892: a Chronology
Basques in the Americas From 1492 to1892: A Chronology “Spanish Conquistador” by Frederic Remington Stephen T. Bass Most Recent Addendum: May 2010 FOREWORD The Basques have been a successful minority for centuries, keeping their unique culture, physiology and language alive and distinct longer than any other Western European population. In addition, outside of the Basque homeland, their efforts in the development of the New World were instrumental in helping make the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America what they are today. Most history books, however, have generally referred to these early Basque adventurers either as Spanish or French. Rarely was the term “Basque” used to identify these pioneers. Recently, interested scholars have been much more definitive in their descriptions of the origins of these Argonauts. They have identified Basque fishermen, sailors, explorers, soldiers of fortune, settlers, clergymen, frontiersmen and politicians who were involved in the discovery and development of the Americas from before Columbus’ first voyage through colonization and beyond. This also includes generations of men and women of Basque descent born in these new lands. As examples, we now know that the first map to ever show the Americas was drawn by a Basque and that the first Thanksgiving meal shared in what was to become the United States was actually done so by Basques 25 years before the Pilgrims. We also now recognize that many familiar cities and features in the New World were named by early Basques. These facts and others are shared on the following pages in a chronological review of some, but by no means all, of the involvement and accomplishments of Basques in the exploration, development and settlement of the Americas.

  • The German Surname Atlas Project ± Computer-Based Surname Geography Kathrin Dräger Mirjam Schmuck Germany
Kathrin Dräger, Mirjam Schmuck, Germany 319 The German Surname Atlas Project ± Computer-Based Surname Geography Kathrin Dräger Mirjam Schmuck Germany Abstract The German Surname Atlas (Deutscher Familiennamenatlas, DFA) project is presented below. The surname maps are based on German fixed network telephone lines (in 2005) with German postal districts as graticules. In our project, we use this data to explore the areal variation in lexical (e.g., Schröder/Schneider µtailor¶) as well as phonological (e.g., Hauser/Häuser/Heuser) and morphological (e.g., patronyms such as Petersen/Peters/Peter) aspects of German surnames. German surnames emerged quite early on and preserve linguistic material which is up to 900 years old. This enables us to draw conclusions from today¶s areal distribution, e.g., on medieval dialect variation, writing traditions and cultural life. Containing not only German surnames but also foreign names, our huge database opens up possibilities for new areas of research, such as surnames and migration. Due to the close contact with Slavonic languages (original Slavonic population in the east, former eastern territories, migration), original Slavonic surnames make up the largest part of the foreign names (e.g., ±ski 16,386 types/293,474 tokens). Various adaptations from Slavonic to German and vice versa occurred. These included graphical (e.g., Dobschinski < Dobrzynski) as well as morphological adaptations (hybrid forms: e.g., Fuhrmanski) and folk-etymological reinterpretations (e.g., Rehsack < Czech Reåak). *** 1. The German surname system In the German speech area, people generally started to use an addition to their given names from the eleventh to the sixteenth century, some even later.

Interest in the competition will be maintained in November with the play-offs, which promise to be exciting and open, and could give the final field of participants a very interesting look indeed. After these deciders, the draw for the final round will well and truly put us on tenterhooks in anticipation of the tournament itself and the fever will continue to mount until the opening match kicks off on 12 June 2004. For the supporters of the national teams which have not managed to qualify for next year’s European Championship final round, the draw for the 2006 World Cup qualifying competition at the beginning of December will give them renewed reason to hope and dream.
