I would also like to thank the Czech Center in New York and Místní knihovna Bolatice for being great sources of literature. My thanks also goes to all of the Czech-Americans who participated in the survey. Their affinity for their Czech heritage and culture only strengthened my affinity for the Czech community abroad. Last but not least I would like to thank Mr. Skýpala for his helpful history consultations, with whose help much of the connections were clarified and the historical narrative made ever more vibrant, and Mr. Flanigan for his editing advice on this thesis. 3 To Porta 4 CONTENT: INTRODUCTION.............................................................................................................. 7 17 TH CENTURY: THE FIRST CZECH-AMERICAN: AUGUSTINE HERMAN.... 13 1.1 The Facts of Interest....................................................................................................... 18 18 TH CENTURY: MORAVIAN BRETHREN ................................................................ 19 2. 19 TH CENTURY ......................................................................................................... 26 3.1.
