User Reviews "Dramatic, poignant and rightfully provocative..." 24 October 2012 | by Sindre Kaspersen (Norway) – See all my reviews Danish screenwriter and director Thomas Vinterberg's eight feature film which he co-wrote with Danish screenwriter and director Tobias Lindholm and co-produced, premiered In competition at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival in 2012, was screened in the Special Presentations section at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival in 2012 and is a Danish production which was shot on location in Denmark and produced by Danish producer and screenwriter Morten Kaufmann and Danish producer Sisse Graum Jørgensen. It tells the story about Lucas, a recently divorced middle-aged man who just began working at a kindergarten and who wishes to spend more time with his teenage son Marcus who lives with his mother. After starting a romance with a foreign woman named Nadja things improve, but one day during a conversation with Grethe who runs the day-care center, he learns that a girl named Klara has told her an unsettling story about him. In a matter of days a spark is turned into a flame and a harmonic village into an irrational witch-hunt against one individual. Finely and acutely directed by Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, this finely paced fictional tale which is narrated from multiple viewpoints though mostly from the main character's point of view, draws an instantly involving and profoundly heartrending portrayal of a little girl who after being unintentionally hurt by a well-liked man whom she has a childhood crush on, unknowingly and with only a few words incriminates him by expressing her anger to the head of the kindergarten. While notable for its naturalistic rural milieu depictions, fine production design by Danish production designer Torben Stig Nielsen, cinematography by Danish cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen, editing by Danish film editors Janus Billeskov Jansen and Anne Østerud, use of sound and realism, this character-driven and narrative-driven psychological drama about family relations, friendship and irrevocable accusations which is set during a late winter in Denmark, depicts a refined study of character and contains a good score by Danish composer Nikolaj Egelund. This somewhat romantic, at times humorous, atmospheric and tangible intrigue which has been chosen as Denmark's official submission to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards in 2014 and where a friendship is tested, a hunter becomes the hunted and the question of guilt transforms ordinary people into paranoid Savages, is impelled and reinforced by its cogent narrative structure, subtle character development, mysterious characters, brilliant writing, the tailor-made though distinct and accomplished acting performance by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, the understated acting performance by Danish actor Thomas Bo Larsen and the impressively authentic acting performance by child actress Annika Wedderkopp. A dramatic, poignant and rightfully provocative tale which gained, among other awards, the award for Best Actor Mads Mikkelsen and the Vulcain Prize of the Technical Artist

SYNOPSIS There’s a theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. If Churchill won WW2 in a heavy daze of alcohol, who knows what a few drops might do for them and their students? Initial results are positive, and the teachers’ little project turns into a genuine academic study. Both their classes and their results continue to improve, and the group feels alive again! As the units are knocked back, some of the participants see further improvement and others go off the rails. It becomes increasingly clear that while alcohol may have fueled great results in world history, some bold acts carry consequences. DIRECTOR’S INTENT THOMAS VINTERBERG “I never drink before breakfast.” The quote is from Churchill, who helped to defeat the Germans and win World War II, while under the excessive and constant influence of alcohol.

Programme Notes Monday 9th August 7.30pm Another Round (Druk) (15) In this highly enjoyable award-winning Danish film, four middle-aged men deal with life’s disappointments by experimenting with alcohol, with mixed results. Faced with stale careers as teachers, failing marriages and mid-life crisis, Martin, Tommy, Nikolaj and Peter decide to try out a pseudo-scientific theory – that people’s lives can be improved by maintaining a low level of alcohol in their system at all times. Taking the project seriously, the friends set themselves strict rules and conduct research into how many successful public figures were habitual drinkers. Initially, they find that sipping during the day and sustaining a low-level of alcohol in the workplace makes them more relaxed, happier and self-confident. But when they start to pursue the idea further, are the risks of the intoxicating social experiment worth taking? Another Round is the latest collaboration between director Thomas Vinterberg, co-writer Tobias Lindholm and Mads Mikkelsen, who plays Martin. In 2012 the trio made The Hunt, an award-winning film which in which Mikkelsen played a kindergarten teacher wrongly accused of being a paedophile. In the hands of many directors Another Round could easily have descended into an absurd broad comedy or a tedious polemic about alcoholism. But Vinterberg avoids the pitfalls of both – he never makes fun of his protagonists and the story makes it clear that drinking can bring pleasure as well as pain. Mikkelsen, always an exceptional actor, is perfection throughout, brilliantly but subtly showing Martin’s transition from depression to rejuvenation – and then beyond.

Dogme 95 Cinema Series to Premiere at MAD on Occasion of Movement’s 20th Anniversary The Director Must Not Be Credited: 20 Years of Dogme 95 explores lasting effects of iconoclastic movement New York, NY (January 21, 2015)—This March, the Museum of Arts and Design is pleased to present The Director Must Not Be Credited: 20 Years of Dogme 95, a cinema series exploring the enduring legacy of the game-changing film movement. Premiering on March 13, 2015, the twentieth anniversary of Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg’s revolutionary manifesto, the series features nine, rarely screened films recognized by the Dogme 95 committee—many of which never received US distributions. Together, these films highlight the growth of Dogme 95 into a worldwide movement that spanned genres and forever changed the ways in which narrative feature films are made. On March 13, 1995, Lars von Trier showered the audience of a conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of cinema with pamphlets outlining his newly crafted Dogme 95 manifesto. Co-written with fellow filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, the manifesto, dubbed the Vow of Chastity, outlined ten dogmatic rules that encouraged a return to traditional values of story, acting and theme, embraced emerging video technology, and banned the use of elaborate special effects in cinema. At its core, the Dogme manifesto aimed to restore a transparency to filmmaking and challenge mainstream cinematic conventions of the time. “Dogme 95 is arguably one of the most important cinematic movements since the French New Wave,” says Jake Yuzna, MAD’s Director of Public Programs.
