Saudade: An Exploration of the Choreographic Process and the Power of Dance Abstract This paper serves as a reflection on my choreographic process as a LINES BFA senior and as an investigation into the innate power of human creative movement. I will document the challenges and joys of producing movement in the dancing arts, as well as illuminate the physical and psychological power of movement harbored within the practice of Dance Movement Therapy, an enduring form of psychotherapeutic movement used to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical well-being. The main goals of my personal choreographic experience, as well as those of my fellow Dance Majors were three-fold: 1) the cultivation of an encouraging and safe space for collaborative creation; 2) the development of understanding and expression of the inner self; and 3) the practice of active empathy, humor, and love.

1 “Call for help”: Analysis of Agent Cooper’s Wounded Masculinity in Twin Peaks 2.6.2021 Dale Cooper Twin Peaks crime fiction detective fiction masculinity trauma Karla Lončar karla.loncar[a]lzmk.hr Ph.D. candidate Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography This essay explores the shifts in representation of the masculinity of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, one of the leading characters of the Twin Peaks fictional universe, created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The research covers three chapters. The first chapter serves as an analysis of Cooper’s character from the original television series (1990–91) and Lynch’s film prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992), in which he is interpreted as an intuitive detective (Angela Hague), who departs from the conventional depiction of detective characters. The second one investigates Cooper’s “returns” in the third season/Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) and their significance for his character development through the lens of psychoanalytic interpretations of the detective/crime genre and its connections to past trauma (Sally Rowe Munt). The third chapter further explores the struggles of Cooper’s three major self-images in The Return: the Good Dale/DougieCooper, Mr. C and Richard, all of which suggest certain issues in perception of his masculinity, by referring to several psychoanalytic, feminist and masculinity scholars (Isaac D. Balbus, Jack Halberstam, Lee Stepien), official Twin Peaks novels The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes (Scott Frost, 1991) and Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier (Mark Frost, 2017) as well as the Ancient myth of Orpheus and Alfred Hitchcock’s film Vertigo (1958).

"Amped About Hell": Representations of the Suburban Gothic in Serial Television Abstract Derived from the work of Bernice M. Murphy, "Suburban Gothic" is a subgenre in popular culture providing continuous commentary on American society. Though she writes extensively about depictions of Suburban Gothic throughout the last several decades, Murphy’s research has shown little interest in television. The advent of complex narrative in serial television, particularly over the last twenty-five years, is crucial to homing in on the format. Viewing the Suburban Gothic as a "genre television,” we can see it evolving into a higher art form. Using essays in aesthetics and film theory to enhance the understanding of Suburban Gothic, three shows are using a combination of these theories.

Aaron Kemer Professor of Cinema " 7 yi £ Bill Nichols Professor of Cinema THE CINEMATIC WINK: REPRESENTATIONS OF WINKING IN SCREEN MEDIA Spencer William Harkness San Francisco, California 2017 The cinematic wink is an investigation of how a human or metaphorical wink can shape the content of screen media. A human wink is performed by contracting an eyelid; a metaphorical wink is constructed with formal cinematic elements. Through examining a survey of wink examples, this investigation seeks to understand how cinematic winking operates as a phenomenon of screen media communication. The cinematic wink is separated into three categories: wink between characters, direct wink at the viewer, and wink by the director. The three categories allow for differentiation between human and metaphorical winks. Evaluation of the selected examples in each category reveals a cluster of similarities among the winks while offering specific discoveries unique to each example. This investigation suggests a framework for understanding how cinematic winks can operate as a phenomenon of screen media communication.

Critics have sought to name this trend, arguing for the ‘re-quel’ as 15 16 a useful term (Pinkerton 2016, 34). For example, writing in Sight & Sound 17 18 For Peer Review 19 Nick Pinkerton argues that re-quels act simultaneously as sequels and as 20 21 restatements of key elements from their previous textual incarnations. By 22 23 introducing new, younger characters alongside ageing favourites, franchises 24 25 can strategically facilitate a “baton passage of Q [diegetic] worlds from one 26 27 generation to the next” (Pinkerton 2016, 34). In such continuations, then, the 28 29 30 issue of cross-generational transfer necessarily becomes significant (Lizardi 31 32 2017). 33 34 Cult TV has proffered a number of re-quels (e.g. Doctor Who; Star 35 36 Trek: The Next Generation; The Prisoner) given that it tends to have 37 38 39 established fan loyalty and brand recognition.

  • A Cinema of Movement: Dance and the Moving Image
A Cinema of Movement: dance and the moving image Erin Brannigan A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of a Doctor of Philosophy Department of Theatre, Film and Dance University of New South Wales May,2004 © Erin Brannigan 2004 Abstract This thesis is an examination of the history and parameters of dancefilm. It traces the history of this form of cinema from some of its earliest manifestations in film's first decades through to contemporary experimental short dance films and videos. In so doing it also examines some of the most significant collaborations between dancers, choreographers, and filmmakers. But this thesis also sets out to examine and rethink the parameters of dancefilm and thereby re-conceive the relations between dance and cinema. In this thesis, dancefilm is understood as a modality that challenges familiar models of cinematic motion through its relation to the body, movement and time, instigating new categories of filmic performance and creating spectatorial experiences that are grounded in the somatic. Such an understanding of dancefilm foregrounds the points where dance and film meet, for example, the moment where the everyday body moves into dance. Drawing on debates in both film theory (in particular ideas of gesture, the close up, and affect) and dance theory (concepts such as radical phrasing, the gestural anacrusis and somatic intelligence) and bringing these two fields into dialogue, this thesis argues that the combination of dance and film produces cine-choreographic practices and gestural circuits of exchange that are specific to the dancefilm form. Conceiving of dancefilm in such a way enables me to understand the relations between the recent body of work that frequently goes under the name of 'dance screen' and a variety of forms of cinema from the musical to the music video.

It is a work of creative nonfiction that relies on my subjectivity and material from a world outside the series that has been created in its wake. Sometimes referred to as a “cult phenomenon,” I show what that experience is specifically like through a microcosm of food. The main subjects of focus are coffee, pie, and donuts wherein I craft each section through research, analysis, personal journey, and investigative work to a specific aspect of the food group. This gastronomical tour aims to explore the importance of subjectivity in relation to objectivity in a format where academic analysis often removes the true feeling of its subject. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF FIGURES………………………………………………………………………………iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS………………………………………………………………………iv Introduction Twin Peaks: How and Infinitely Why ....................................................................... 1 Chapter 1 Prolific Pie: Cherry Pie and Other Miscreants .............................................................. 3 Faceology of Pie: Scene Analysis of Cooper and Huckleberry Pie .......................................... 10 Chapter 2 Coffee: Black as Midnight, Masculinity, and the True Meaning ...............................
