The defacement of the ‘‘book of the world’’ accomplished during the Enlightenment beckons ‘‘an invigorating vector of intellectual discovery, rather than a calamitous diminishment’’ (xi). This is because ‘‘[t]hinking has interests that do not coincide with those of living; indeed, they can and have been pitted against the latter’’ (xi). Pursuing these interests, Brassier develops a concept of the ‘‘will to know’’ congruent with a ‘‘will to nothingness’’ impervious to the countervailing force of the ‘‘will to live.’’ It is not the least of the ironies of Nihil Unbound that a work committed to marshalling the rigorous stringency of reason against the affective finesse of interpretation often produces claims that connect with the gut as much as the mind. Committed though he is to the notion that words are categorically weak objects for philosophical thought, Brassier nonetheless gets a lot of mileage out of them. -

Against 'Flat Ontologies'
64 Ray Brassier Deleveling: Against ‘Flat Ontologies’ Ray Brassier is associate professor of philosophy at the American University of Beirut. What I am going to present today is a critical discussion of the 65 tenets of so-called ‘flat ontology’. The expression ‘flat onto- logy’ has a complicated genealogy. It was originally coined as a pejorative term for empiricist philosophies of science by Roy Bhaskar in his 1975 book, A Realist Theory of Science. By the late 1990s, it had begun to acquire a positive sense in discus- sions of the work of Deleuze and Guattari. But it only achieved widespread currency in the wake of Manual De Landa’s 2002 book about Deleuze, Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy. More recently, it has been championed by proponents of ‘ob- ject-oriented ontology’ and ‘new materialism’. It is its use by these theorists that I will be discussing today. I will begin by explaining the ‘four theses’ of flat onto- logy, as formulated by Levi Bryant. Bryant is a proponent of ‘object-oriented ontology’, a school of thought founded by Graham Harman. In his 2010 work The Democracy of Objects, Bryant encapsulates flat ontology in the following four theses: Thesis 1: “First, due to the split characteristic of all ob- jects, flat ontology rejects any ontology of transcendence or presence that privileges one sort of entity as the origin of all others and as fully present to itself.” Thesis 2: “Second, […] the world or the universe does not exist. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Liverpool Repository LANGUAGE AFTER PHILOSOPHY OF NATURE: SCHELLING’S GEOLOGY OF DIVINE NAMES DANIEL WHISTLER Each mineral is a real philological problem.1 Future commentary on Dante belongs to the natural sciences… No one has yet approached Dante with a geologist’s hammer, in order to ascertain the crystalline structure of his rock, in order to study the particles of other minerals in it, to study its smoky colour, its garish patterning, to judge it as a mineral crystal which has been subjected to the most varied series of accidents.2 What happens to language after the post-linguistic turn? In what does a speculative approach to religion consist? Such are the two questions around which this essay is structured. It is not my purpose to give a comprehensive answer to either question; rather, I am concerned with one very specific approach that could be taken, and this is the approach of F.W.J. Schelling. Schelling has never been so relevant, and this is in no small part thanks to Iain Hamilton Grant’s Philosophies of Nature after Schelling. Grant’s work–part of the recent resurgence in speculative philosophies—has been instrumental in presenting Schelling’s Naturphilosophie as a viable pursuit for philosophy in the wake of Deleuze. This chapter is intended as a “regional application” of Grant’s presentation of Schelling onto philosophy of language and religion. It is important to stress straight-off that, while language and the numinous may well be two of the deconstructionist’s favourite tools for undermining theoretical discourse, this chapter has no such aim. -

Three Problems about the Science of Being qua Being ‘There is a science (epistêmê),’ says Aristotle, ‘which studies being qua being (to on hê(i) on), and the attributes belonging to it in its own right’ (Met. 1003a21–22). This claim, which opens Metaphysics IV 1, is both surprising and unsettling—sur- prising because Aristotle seems elsewhere to deny the existence of any such science and unsettling because his denial seems very plausibly grounded. He claims that each science (epistêmê) studies a unified genus (APo 87a39-b1), but he denies that there is a single genus for all beings (APo 92b14; Top. 121a16, b7–9; cf. Met. 998b22). Evidently, his two claims conspire against the science he announces: if there is no genus of being and every science requires its own genus, then there is no science of being. This seems, moreover, to be precisely the conclusion drawn by Aristotle in his Eudemian Ethics, where he maintains that we should no more look for a gen- eral science of being than we should look for a general science of goodness: ‘Just as being is not something single for the things mentioned [viz. -

OGBONNAYA, M.A. Essien Ukpabio Presbyterian Theological College, Itu, Nigeria Abstract This work is of the view that the question of being is not only a problem in Western philosophy but also in African philosophy. It, therefore, posits that being is that which is and has both abstract and concrete aspect. The work arrives at this conclusion by critically analyzing and evaluating the views of some key African philosophers with respect to being. With this, it discovers that the way that these African philosophers have postulated the idea of being is in the same manner like their Western philosophers whom they tried to criticize. This work tries to synthesize the notions of beings of these African philosophers in order to reach at a better understanding of being. This notion of being leans heavily on Asouzu’s ibuanyidanda ontology which does not bifurcate or polarize being, but harmonizes entities or realities that seem to be contrary or opposing in being. KEYWORDS: Being, Ifedi, Ihedi, Force (Vital Force), Missing Link, Muntu, Ntu, Nkedi, Ubuntu, Uwa Introduction African philosophy is a critical and rational explanation of being in African context, and based on African logic. It is in line with this that Jonathan Chimakonam avers that “in African philosophy we study reality of which being is at the center” (2013, 73). William Wallace remarks that “being signifies a concept that has the widest extension and the least comprehension” (1977, 86). It has posed a lot of problems to philosophers who tend to probe into it, its nature and manifestations. -

DEATH IN DEEP SPACE There is a motif commonly found in science fiction, which derives from earlier narratives of nautical adven- ture and stories of castaways. The motif is that of the sole human being, unmoored, set loose, and adrift in space. One of the most popular versions of this is found in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which astronaut Frank Poole is set loose by the intelligent supercomputer HAL to drift aimlessly into the depths of deep space. In the film Kubrick portrays the scene without a soundtrack or, for that matter, any sound at all. The scene of being set adrift into space is depicted with silent horror: all we as viewers see is a lone figure speeding off into a black abyss. JAMES W. HEISIG, PHILOSOPHERS OF NOTHINGNESS During the Golden Age of science fiction in the 1920s and 1930s, pulp authors tended to depict the “adrift in space” motif as being “lost in space,” that is, as a by-product of inter-galactic adventure narratives. One was only lost in space until the next adventure, the next battle, the next conquest. However, for earlier works—most notably Camille Flammarion’s metaphysical science fiction Lumen—being adrift in space is less a by-way to yet another adventure, but a speculative opportunity in and of itself. Being adrift in space is the story itself, so much so that Edgar Allen Poe could pen entire cosmic dialogues around the theme, without character, plot, or setting. -

PARRHESIA NUMBER 12 • 2011 • 1 - 11 HISTORY AND EVENT IN ALAIN BADIOU Quentin Meillassoux, translated by Thomas Nail1 I would like to lay out for you the main theoretical decisions in the philosophy of Alain Badiou concerning the themes of today’s seminar: history and event.2 I do not speak as a disciple of Alain Badiou, because I develop philosophical positions distinct from his: but it seems important to me, that if one seeks to enter into a conceptual contemporaneity with the Marxist and Post-Marxist demands of politics and history, that one do so with the full scope of Badiou’s system in view, a system, now built around his two principle books Being and Event (BE) and Logics of Worlds (LW). This philosophy is particularly complex, but it seems to me that one can bring it into view through the two notions of history and event. I will thus attempt to explain a nodal and seemingly paradoxical thesis of Badiou’s: that there is only a history of the eternal, because only the eternal proceeds from the event. In other words: there is only a history of truths insofar as all truth is strictly eternal and impossible to reduce to any relativism. Badiou refuses therefore two antithetical positions: on the one hand that there can be eternal truths deprived as such of their historicity—a position proper to classical metaphysics—and on the other hand conversely that there can be no eternal truth, all discursive statements being irremediably inscribed in a historico-cultural context that strictly delimits the scope of truth to the particular instance that it supports. -
