When the Pot Plays Potter: “Isaiah”, Toy Story and Religious Socialization Abstract Biblical verses mentioning the “pot and the potter” entail a God/creation relationship in which the creation is warned not to turn against, or even criticize, the Creator; humankind is advised humility for fear of Yahweh’s punishment. This is a comparative study of three films with a strong emphasis on a children’s film, Toy Story (1995); the movies to be examined are treated as allegories of the concept of potter/pot lesson with a twist as the humans are playing God/potter. The movies geared more to an adult or mature audience (The Matrix [1999] and Terminator [1986]) feature the creation (robots) turned against the creator (humankind) with deadly consequences for humans. In Toy Story, an animated film, the creators (humans) are not threatened and the “pots” even agree to their condition. The film, I suggest, is an excellent example of the process of religious socialization as played out in a modern fairy tale. -
Famed Soprano Renee Fleming Performs Original Single 'Still Dream'
PRESS RELEASE Oct. 15, 2012, 1:55 p.m. EDT Famed Soprano Renee Fleming Performs Original Single 'Still Dream' With Music By Alexandre Desplat And Lyrics By David Lindsay-Abaire For DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians" New Single Headlines Soundtrack Album Featuring Score by Four-Time Academy Award® Nominated Composer Alexandre Desplat GLENDALE, Calif., Oct. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ‐‐ DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. DWA ‐0.05% today announced that acclaimed soprano Renee Fleming has performed the original song "Still Dream" on the soundtrack for the upcoming Rise of the Guardians, which also features a score by Four‐Time Academy Award® nominated and Grammy® Award winning composer Alexandre Desplat. Varese Sarabande will release the soundtrack on November 13, preceding the film's nationwide release on November 21. The original, end‐credit song "Still Dream" was written and produced by Desplat, with lyrics by Rise of the Guardians screenwriter, Grammy® Award nominee and Pulitzer Prize winning author, David Lindsay‐Abaire. The complete score, recorded at the historic Abbey Road in London and Air Studios, was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and features choral work by London Voices. To create the music and lyrics for the original song, Desplat and Lindsay‐Abaire drew upon the film's heroic and sweeping story as inspiration. "There is much more music in Rise of the Guardians than is found in the average live‐action film," says Desplat, who conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in the recording of his original compositions. "The goal with the score was to emphasize every moment of joy, sadness and soul so that audiences would be able to dive with the characters into their worlds. -

Women in Film Time: Forty Years of the Alien Series (1979–2019)
IAFOR Journal of Arts & Humanities Volume 6 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2019 Women in Film Time: Forty Years of the Alien Series (1979–2019) Susan George, University of Delhi, India. Abstract Cultural theorists have had much to read into the Alien science fiction film series, with assessments that commonly focus on a central female ‘heroine,’ cast in narratives that hinge on themes of motherhood, female monstrosity, birth/death metaphors, empire, colony, capitalism, and so on. The films’ overarching concerns with the paradoxes of nature, culture, body and external materiality, lead us to concur with Stephen Mulhall’s conclusion that these concerns revolve around the issue of “the relation of human identity to embodiment”. This paper uses these cultural readings as an entry point for a tangential study of the Alien films centring on the subject of time. Spanning the entire series of four original films and two recent prequels, this essay questions whether the Alien series makes that cerebral effort to investigate the operations of “the feminine” through the space of horror/adventure/science fiction, and whether the films also produce any deliberate comment on either the lived experience of women’s time in these genres, or of film time in these genres as perceived by the female viewer. Keywords: Alien, SF, time, feminine, film 59 IAFOR Journal of Arts & Humanities Volume 6 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2019 Alien Films that Philosophise Ridley Scott’s 1979 S/F-horror film Alien spawned not only a remarkable forty-year cinema obsession that has resulted in six specific franchise sequels and prequels till date, but also a considerable amount of scholarly interest around the series. -

A text such as Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995), though, explicitly activates and draws upon these links more than most. Noel Brown’s chapter in this book highlights some of the cultural references found in the fi lm’s script, and the ways in which these intertextual gags contribute towards its dual address by reaching out to mul- tiple demographics. Here, though, I focus on the connections established by the toys themselves, and in particular the meanings they can create for a child audience. -
Educational and Therapeutic Impact of Contemporary Animated Film Characters on the Viewer
Konteksty Pedagogiczne 2(11)/2018, s. 151–163 DOI: 10.19265/KP.2018.211151 www.kontekstypedagogiczne.pl Joanna Mytnik [email protected] University of Bialystok ORCID iD: 0000-0003-3924-8188 Educational and therapeutic impact of contemporary animated film characters on the viewer Introduction From the beginning of its existence, films have been evoking interest and giving inspiration. A motion picture has been a tool for many practition- ers. Educators, psychologists, therapists, and animators have long appreci- ated and used film art in their work. Considering the increasing pervasion of the mass media into human life, its presence in many aspects of human functioning, it is necessary to pay close attention to the power of its influ- ence. It is worth noting that the products of popular culture do not only carry risks. Films created for commercial purposes also serve higher purposes, not just entertainment. Being easier in perception for the viewer at any age (through the frequency of contact with this cultural product), it can influence their emotions more strongly, encourage deeper mental work and stimulate reflection. In this article I would like to focus primarily on the possibilities of supporting upbringing and human development, referring to the assump- tions of film therapy (Kozubek, 2016). According to Depta, “the starting point of educational work with a film should be the use of such films that are most popular among young viewers while increasing their cognitive horizons” (Depta, 1983, p. 165). The potential of contemporary animated films seems to be indisputable in this respect, as will be demonstrated by the analysis of the main factor of their influence on the viewer, namely film heroes. -
