ethicalconsumer.org 7 NEWS Climate UK BANKS CONTINUE TO FUND CLIMATE CHAOS

The latest Banking on Climate Chaos 2021 report finds that the world’s 60 largest private sector banks have financed fossil fuel industries with $3.8 trillion since the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2016. Although fossil fuel financing dipped 9% in 2020, in parallel with a fall in demand and production for fossil fuels, this appears to have mainly been driven by the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic. The financing in 2020 was still higher than 2016, with the overall trend going in the wrong direction. According to the report, Barclays ($144.897 billion) was the worst in Europe and 7th globally. HSBC was not far behind in 13th position ($110.745 billion). Read the full report here - www.ran.org/ bankingonclimatechaos2021

ethicalconsumer.org 9 SHOPPING GUIDE Fridges & freezers Looking for a greener fridge?

his guide is for anyone with a fridge, freezer or fridge-freezer, which is probably most of us. We will highlight ways to make existing appliances as energy efficient as possible, Tand to make best use of them to cut down on food waste. But we’ll also explain why it might actually make sense to buy something new, even if yours still works (as long as you dispose of your old equipment properly). If you do decide to buy, we help you think about what to look for. And what to avoid. This includes smart fridges, American-style fridges, and fridges or freezers that are just bigger than you need. And ok, a green fridge might not be a realistic colour option, but there are some really sensible things to consider if you want to be as eco as possible. We explain the recent switch to new energy labelling, and which companies are leading or lagging behind, but also why there’s more to making an energy- efficient choice than whether it’s A-rated – ‘kWh’ are key. As always, our scores uncover social concerns too. We explain why you might want to boycott some fridge brands for their ties to oppressive regimes, and which companies have been found to use tax havens too.

Best use of your existing fridge There are some simple tips to keep an existing fridge as energy efficient as possible, which will save on your bills as well as cutting carbon emissions. For the most common method of steel production, blast furnaces are heated to temperatures around 1,300 degrees Celsius, requiring huge amounts of energy. WHAT TO ASK WHEN BUYING LOCAL Although they may not appear on our score table, buying from your local brewery can be a way to cut your carbon footprint, avoid the problems that giant multinationals might bring with them, and to support local enterprise. Here are a few questions you might want to ask them: l Where do you source your ingredients from? Look for ingredients that are organic and/or local. It’s a good sign if a brewery can tell you about the farms that they work with. l Is it vegan? Many brewers suspect that isinglass impacts beer taste, so local craft breweries may in fact be likely to sell vegan beer. l Do you have any approaches for sustainable manufacture? Some UK breweries use solar panels or renewable energy for manufacture. One, Hepworth Brewery, even uses a ‘beer-source heat pump’ for its building – which it claims is the first in the world.

Could the fight to ban the use of peat finally end in victory? SIMON BIRCH talks to a leading campaigner.

“Peat has for too long been presented as a plentiful and perfect product in which to grow plants. But if gardeners could see the destruction that peat extraction has caused to habitats around the globe, they would be truly horrified,” says Nikki Williams from the Wildlife Trusts. “The gardening sector has had a decade to end peat use,” adds de Zylva. “An outright ban or a levy on its sale could be the only way to stop garden centres and DIY stores profiting from the sale of this natural asset at rock bottom prices.” Whether or not the government chooses to act though is now largely Little Woolden Moss in Lancashire was up until recently exploited for immaterial as it looks like © Lancashire Wildlife Trust Wildlife © Lancashire peat.
