Multi-Domain Level Generation and Blending with Sketches Via Example
MULTI-DOMAIN LEVEL GENERATION AND BLENDING WITH SKETCHES VIA EXAMPLE-DRIVEN BSP AND VARIATIONAL AUTOENCODERS Sam Snodgrass Anurag Sarkar modl.ai Northeastern University Copenhagen, Denmark Boston, MA, USA [email protected] [email protected] June 18, 2020 ABSTRACT Procedural content generation via machine learning (PCGML) has demonstrated its usefulness as a content and game creation approach, and has been shown to be able to support human creativity. An important facet of creativity is combinational creativity or the recombination, adaptation, and reuse of ideas and concepts between and across domains. In this paper, we present a PCGML approach for level generation that is able to recombine, adapt, and reuse structural patterns from several domains to approximate unseen domains. We extend prior work involving example-driven Binary Space Partitioning for recombining and reusing patterns in multiple domains, and incorporate Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) for generating unseen structures. We evaluate our approach by blending across 7 domains and subsets of those domains. We show that our approach is able to blend domains together while retaining structural components. Additionally, by using different groups of training domains our approach is able to generate both 1) levels that reproduce and capture features of a target domain, and 2) levels that have vastly different properties from the input domain. Keywords procedural content generation, level blending, ize across several domains. These methods either try to level generation, binary space partitioning, variational supplement a new domain’s training data with examples autoencoder, PCGML from other domains [25], build multiple models and blend them together [7, 20], or directly build a model trained on multiple domains [21]. -
Financial Results Briefing Global Release, April 2018
Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ended March 2018 Thank you for making time to attend Nintendo’s financial briefing. I am Tatsumi Kimishima, President of Nintendo. Nintendo Co., Ltd. Mr. Furukawa, General Manager of the Corporate Financial Results Briefing Planning Department, has just presented our financial President and Representative Director results for this period. Tatsumi Kimishima I will now discuss our planned initiatives for the fiscal year ending March 2019. Firstly, Nintendo Labo has had the high expectation as a “very Nintendo” product since the original announcement in January this year, and as soon as it was launched, consumers have been posting photos and video of parents and children as they work together to assemble Global Release, April 2018 the cardboard pieces and then play with their completed Toy-Con, which were unimaginable in video games before. It has been on sale for only a week in Japan and the US, while sales in Europe will begin today, but the main purchasers of Nintendo Labo at launch are not the same as with typical video games, and they are mainly elementary school children and their fathers, as well as game players who like creative activities. We developed and will nurture Nintendo Labo as a product that is not constrained by the boundaries of conventional video games and can endear itself to a broader range of consumers. From the initial response, we have this solid feeling that we are off to a great start in that regard. Some Nintendo Titles Released Since the Start of the Year We began releasing Nintendo titles non-stop with the launch of Nintendo Switch, and kept the new-release buzz alive through the end of the year. -

Analysis of Innovation in the Video Game Industry
Siete i miei fiorellini. Senza di voi tutto questo non sarebbe stato possibile. Grazie, vi voglio bene. III IV Abstract During the last couple decades video game consoles and arcades have been subjected to the unexpected, swift development and spread of mobile gaming. What is it though that allowed physical platforms to yet maintain the market share they have over these new and widely accessible online resources? The aim of this thesis is to provide a deeper understanding of the concept of innovation in the quickly developing world of video games. The analysis is carried out with qualitative methods, one based on technological development in the context of business history and one on knowledge exchange and networking. Throughout this examination it has been possible to explore what kind of changes and innovations were at first applied by this industry and then extended to other fields. Some examples would be motion control technology, AR (Augmented Reality) or VR (Virtual Reality), which were originally developed for the video game industry and eventually were used in design, architecture or in the medical field. -
Final Fantasy VII (1997) Is a Hugely Successful Japanese Srole Playing Game
M170 CARR M/UP 24/11/05 11:06 AM Page 72 Phil's G4 Phil's G4:Users:phil:Public: PHIL'S JOBS:9595 - POLIT CHAPTER 06 Playing Roles Andrew Burn QUARESOFT’S Final Fantasy VII (1997) is a hugely successful Japanese SRole Playing Game. It sold to virtually all Japan’s Playstation owners within the first forty-eight hours of its release in 1997, and was no less popular in the USA on its release there later that year.1 In this chapter, we use FFVII as a case study to explore one of the key dimensions of Role Playing Games: the avatar. ‘Avatar’ is the Sanskrit word for ‘descent’, and refers to the embodi- ment of a god on earth. It is by means of the avatar that the player becomes embodied in the game, and performs the role of protagonist. Cloud Strife, the protagonist-avatar of FFVII, is a mysterious mercenary. Dressed in leather and big boots, he wields a sword as big as himself; but he has an oddly childish face, whimsically delineated in the ‘deformed aesthetic’ of manga, with enormous, glowing blue eyes, framed in cyberpunk blond spikes (Illustration 6). This is how Rachel, a seventeen-year-old English player of FFVII, described Cloud in one of our research interviews: It’s just basically you play this character who’s in this like really cool like cityscape and you have to, er, and he finds out . and, er, he escapes because he finds out that, um, he’s, because he starts having these flashbacks, and he escapes from this city because he’s being pursued I think, and, um, he has to defeat this big corporation and try and – oh yeah, Sephiroth, he’s this big military commander, and you have to go and try to stop him, ’cos he’s trying to raise up all the beasts, and you do this by collecting materia, which you can use for magic and stuff, and you use your own weapons, and – Rachel’s phrase ‘this character’ evokes the conventional idea of the fictional character operating as a protagonist in a narrative. -
Nintendo's Leak
Rumor: Smash Bros. roster leaks; you can finally shoot the Duck Hunt dog Convincing video footage shows Bowser Jr., Xenoblade protagonist as new fighters. Sam Machkovech - 8/25/2014, 2:29 PM NeoGAF The next entries in the Super Smash Bros. fighting franchise, a 3DS/Wii U duo with separate (and partly unknown) release dates, has seen its roster of fan-favorite characters expand in drips of one or two character announcements at a time for years now. That promotional slow-drip may have finally run out, however, thanks to a mix of questionable screenshots and convincing video footage that surfaced on enthusiast forum NeoGAF in recent days. The videos, which were uploaded [and promptly deleted by way of Nintendo copyright claim] on Monday and focused on the 3DS edition of the next Smash Bros., contained appearances from previously unannounced characters Bowser Jr.—piloting the flying clown-face pod that first appeared in Super Mario World—and Shulk, the spiky-haired, JRPG-cliche protagonist from the Nintendo-published Xenoblade Chronicles. These videos appeared to confirm leaked information that surfaced as early as last Wednesday, including a full roster screenshot that contained, among other characters, the dog from NES classic Duck Hunt. If true, this would be the first time the annoying, laughing pooch would be directly controllable in a Nintendo game, though you could actually shoot the mongrel in his grinning face if you tracked down a Vs. Duck Hunt arcade machine. That supposed full-character roster screenshot also included returning Smash faves like Earthbound protagonist Ness, classic Nintendo mascot R.O.B., and Star Fox sidekick Falco.
