With the help of existing translation strategies, it aims to map out the strategies used in Swedish webpages in English with a focus on names and words/expressions for which there are no direct equivalents in English. The study shows that the most common strategies regarding the translation of names were translating word for word and using the nearest equivalent. Regarding language-specific expressions, the most common strategies were using cultural equivalents and reduction. Not surprisingly, additions in the text were most often matters of importance to an international audience, and the most common omissions were matters that only had a local interest. Study IN STOCKHOLM Stockholm – an international environment with strong universities Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the largest university town in the Nordic countries. About 80 000 students, 5 000 of whom are international, study at the somewhat more than twenty universities and university colleges in this area. The academic level at the universities/university colleges is high with enthusiastic and competent teachers and researchers. Stockholm is doing well in an international comparison. Swedes are also one of the groups of people in the world with the highest level of equality. Stockholm has a pulsating nightlife and offers a broad range of cultural events. Green and safe Stockholm is one of the cleanest cities in Europe with many green areas, parks and beaches in the middle of the city. TemaNord 2015:528 TemaNord TemaNord 2015:528 TemaNord Ved Stranden 18 DK-1061 Copenhagen K www.norden.org Joint Degrees and the Nordic Countries Nordic Master Programme – Legal and administrative obstacles Joint Degrees and the Nordic Countries According to the strategy for Nordic co-operation in education and research the Nordic countries should remove obstacles for free movement for students and researchers in the Nordic region. One goal with this report has been to identify obstacles for organizing joint programmes on master level. The Nordic Council of Ministers has until now financed, in co-operation with universities, 23 Nordic Master Programmes. Minimum of three higher education institutions develop joint programmes, that will attract both Nordic and non-Nordic students. The report gives an overview of the legislation in relation to joint degrees in the Nordic countries. It also has recommendations for the Nordic Master Programme and offers separate thematic documents like a template for a joint diploma. The report will hopefully serve as practical guide book for those in the process of planning or building up joint master programmes. Hopefully, the report also makes a contribution to developing other international joint programmes. Sweden is one of the countries in the world with the highest proportion of female-led universities. Among the Swedish uni- versities that are ranked within the top 250 in the world, 57 % are led by women. Moreover, the number of female professors in Stockholm and Sweden is one of the highest in Europe. Gen- der equality in Stockholm’s academic scene has seen a posi- tive development over the past 10 years although there is still some way to go before the goal of a fully gender-balanced academy is achieved.
