Its contributors have all been variously embedded in the cultural, intellectual and political life of the city over many years: they know of what they speak. Freedom—unlike poetry and prose—does not just happen anywhere. Indeed, it is the case that, although men may be born free, they are too often in chains. Freedom has to be won, sustained and protected. It is always at risk, the fact as well as the word. The argument of this irresistible volume is that, as a city and area, Hull has a proud and distinctive history of resisting forms of oppression, of using an angular independence of thought to challenge the orthodox and of fghting for principles and practical change. Why should this be so? The introduction suggests that it may have had something to do with Hull’s relative isolation and the space it affords for thought. -

O’Regan, Director Graduate Program in Theology Notre Dame, Indiana March 2014 © Copyright 2014 Damon McGraw APOCALYPTIC THOUGHT IN JOHN HENRY NEWMAN: DISCERNING ANTICHRIST IN MODERNITY Abstract by Damon McGraw This dissertation is the first full-length study of the apocalyptic thought of John Henry Newman (1801-1890). As such it fills lacunae in the fields of Newman scholarship and apocalyptic studies simply by showing that there is a significant amount of apocalyptic thought to be found in Newman’s writings and that he deserves to be recognized as an important figure in this Christian theological tradition. The dissertation also makes three larger contributions to scholarship. It addresses the perennial and unresolved question of Newman’s intellectual coherence and theological identity. It argues that attending to the role of apocalyptic narrative in his thought reveals a unique integrity and consistency in what otherwise appears to be a highly eclectic set of writings. It explains how apocalyptic thought provided a master narrative that oriented his life and work, the varied path of his religious and literary career, as well as the development of his mature mind. To scholars of apocalyptic thought this dissertation demonstrates that Newman was a fervent inheritor of the British Protestant apocalyptic tradition and that his efforts to renew and extend its narrative led to his realization of a distinctively modern Catholic apocalyptic perspective Damon McGraw as well as a profound conviction of the “secularizing” effects of the classically Protestant identification of the Pope as Antichrist. -

Beers Brief History of English and American Literature CHAPTER I FROM THE CONQUEST TO CHAUCER 1066-1400 The Norman conquest of England, in the 11th century, made a break in the natural growth of the English language and literature. The old English or Anglo-Saxon had been a purely Germanic speech, with a complicated grammar and a full set of inflections. For three hundred years following the battle of Hastings this native tongue was driven from the king's court and the courts of law, from parliament, school, and university. During all this time there were two languages spoken in England. Norman French was the birth-tongue of the upper classes and English of the lower. When the latter finally got the better in the struggle, and became, about the middle of the 14th century, the national speech of all England, it was no longer the English of King Alfred. It was a new language, a grammarless tongue, almost wholly 2 stripped of its inflections. It had lost a half of its old words, and had filled their places with French equivalents. The Norman lawyers had introduced legal terms; the ladies and courtiers, words of dress and courtesy. The knight had imported the vocabulary of war and of the chase. The master-builders of the Norman castles and cathedrals contributed technical expressions proper to the architect and the mason. The art of cooking was French. The naming of the living animals, ox, swine, sheep, deer, was left to the Saxon churl who had the herding of them, while the dressed meats, beef, pork, mutton, venison, received their baptism from the table-talk of his Norman master. -

Elamparayil Washington, D.C. 2012 John Henry Newman’s Lectures on the Prophetical Office of the Church: A Contextual History and Ecclesiological Analysis Joseph G. Elamparayil, S.T.D. Director: John T. Ford, S.T.D. In order to provide an ecclesiological foundation for the Oxford Movement (a reform movement within the Church of England), John Henry Newman (1801-1890) gave a series of lectures in 1834 and 1836 in the Adam de Brome Chapel of St. Mary’s Church, Oxford. His presentations were later published as Lectures on the Prophetical Office of the Church Viewed Relatively to Romanism and Popular Protestantism (18361; 18372). The third edition of the Prophetical Office was published in 1877 with revisions, notes and a new Preface. This dissertation provides a contextual history and an ecclesiological analysis of Newman’s Prophetical Office. The first part of this study examines the historical background of the Prophetical Office, beginning with Newman’s early ideas of the Church, which he learned from his study of the Fathers of the Church and the Arian controversy. British Protestant Missions and the Conversion of Europe, 1600–1900 This book is the first account of British Protestant conversion initiatives directed towards continental Europe between 1600 and 1900. Continental Europe was considered a missionary land – another periphery of the world, whose centre was imperial Britain. British missions to Europe were informed by religious experiments in America, Africa, and Asia, rendering these offensives against Europe a true form of “imaginary colonialism.” British Protestant missionaries often understood themselves to be at the forefront of a civilising project directed at Catholics (and sometimes even at other Protestants). Their mission was further reinforced by Britain becoming a land of compassionate refuge for European dissenters and exiles. This book engages with the myth of International Protestantism, questioning its early origins and its narrative of transnational belonging, while also interrogating Britain as an imagined Protestant land of hope and glory. In the history of Western Christianities, “converting Europe” had a role that has not been adequately investigated. This is the story of the attempted, and ultimately failed, effort to convert a continent. Ford, S.T.D. John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) is well known for his Parochial and Plains Sermons, which were delivered between 1828 and 1843; these sermons have usually been treated as resources for spirituality, while their theological content has rarely been analyzed, even though these sermons have a noteworthy theological basis. In particular, although Newman never wrote a treatise specifically discussing the Trinity, he frequently preached on the Trinity during his Anglican years in a way that was scriptural, theological, and pastoral. Newman was also one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement, which was launched in order to promote the renewal of the Church of England and so ―withstand the Liberalism of the day.‖ During the decade of Newman‘s involvement in the Oxford Movement (1833-43), when Tractarian theology seemed to be gaining widespread acceptance among Anglicans, Newman‘s first principle was dogma and the defense of ―fundamental doctrines‖— particularly the doctrine of the Trinity. This dissertation examines Newman‘s Trinitarian theology in his Parochial and Plain Sermons during the first decade of the Oxford Movement (1833 to 1843) in relation to his personal theological development.
