In order to provide an ecclesiological foundation for the Oxford Movement (a reform movement within the Church of England), John Henry Newman (1801-1890) gave a series of lectures in 1834 and 1836 in the Adam de Brome Chapel of St. Mary’s Church, Oxford. His presentations were later published as Lectures on the Prophetical Office of the Church Viewed Relatively to Romanism and Popular Protestantism (18361; 18372). The third edition of the Prophetical Office was published in 1877 with revisions, notes and a new Preface. This dissertation provides a contextual history and an ecclesiological analysis of Newman’s Prophetical Office. The first part of this study examines the historical background of the Prophetical Office, beginning with Newman’s early ideas of the Church, which he learned from his study of the Fathers of the Church and the Arian controversy. Next is an account of the impressions of the Church that Newman derived from his first encounters with the churches of Greece and Rome during his Mediterranean voyage (1832-1833) and his ecclesiological reflections in his four-part essay, “Home Thoughts Abroad.” This dissertation then examines the Tracts for the Times that Newman wrote on ecclesiological topics during the Oxford Movement (1833-1837) and also discusses the influence on his ecclesiology of his discussion with both a Roman Catholic opponent, Abbé Jean-Nicolas Jager (1790-1868), and an Anglican friend, Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836). The second part of this study is an ecclesiological analysis of the fourteen lectures of the Prophetical Office, along with the revisions, notes and new Preface that Newman added in 1877. This analysis, which examines the characteristics and principal themes of Newman’s theological thought, shows that Newman’s Prophetical Office represents a comprehensive ecclesiology. In sum, this dissertation provides a contextual history as well as an ecclesiological analysis of Newman’s Prophetical Office, which was his “major constructive work in ecclesiology” yet which until now has received insufficient attention and recognition. If God in fact exists, then only real assent to the proposition asserting his existence is adequate. Notional assent is inadequate because it is assent to a notion or abstraction, and not to a present reality. But on Newman's view it is notional assent which normally follows on a formal inference, therefore the significance of traditional formal arguments is thrown into question. Newman has claimed that our attitude toward a proposition may be one of three; we may doubt it, infer it, or assent to it, and to assent to it is to hold it unconditionally.

Drawing inspiration directly from the works of John Henry Newman, this document not only affirmed the insights found in his Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), which church authorities embraced during the first decade of New- man’s life as a Catholic, but also his provocative Rambler article, “On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine” (1859), which resulted in episcopal accusations of heresy and Newman’s delation to Rome. The tension between Newman’s theory of development and his appeal for the hierarchy to consider the experience of the “faithful” ultimately centers on the “seat” of authority, and whose voices matter. In 1541, he left Europe as a missionary to the “East Indies.” He spent short, they value arms more than any people I have ever seen. Becker This qualitative study explored the role of Christian privilege in the college experiences of Jewish and Muslim undergraduates at one large public, land grant, research intensive university, a predominantly white institution (PWI) in the Midwest. I interviewed 13 participants, seven Muslims (four women, three men) and six Jews (three women, three men), about their experiences in college, how Christian privilege appeared (or did not) in those experiences, and how and if they defined Christian privilege for themselves. Through narrative inquiry, in single session, semi-structured interviews, I gathered the stories of these 13 participants and the role of Christian privilege in their college experiences at Midwest University (MU). This study provides an in depth exploration of what was in the current news when this study was conducted and written up regarding Jews and Muslims in the United States and particularly in higher education. A full chapter is dedicated to a history of religion, particularly Christianity and especially Protestantism, in the United States (and colonial America) and its higher education using Roger Geiger’s (2005) “The Ten Generations of American Higher Education” and Douglas Jacobsen and Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen’s (2012) No Longer Invisible: Religion in University Education as guideposts for understanding that history.
