I had hoped to publish earlier this year but a number of factors have conspired to hold up production. It seems that the good times have finally returned to Chaosium and 2004 looks like it may be finally the year of Call of Cthulhu’s return to proper production. This year has already seen the release of Cthulhu: Dark Ages. Whilst this new setting won’t be supported by The Black Seal, we applaud the decision to release it. Together with the launch of the Miskatonic University Library Association Monograph series Chaosium seems to be increasing its output slowly but surely. On the other hand Pagan Publishing seems incredibly quiet. The Delta Green novel ‘Denied to the Enemy’ and the long-awaited reprint of Delta Green with d20 Cthulhu stats are all reported to be on their way, but so far have not made an appearance. Another piece of good news is the imminent release of ‘Worlds of Cthulhu’ magazine. I’m biased reporting this, because I’m the Editor of the magazine. Pegasus Press of Germany will be producing a twice-yearly glossy magazine dedicated to all settings and systems of Call of Cthulhu. I know Worlds of Cthulhu will be a success because Keith ‘Doc’ Herber is Chief Editor, and Frank Heller, editor of Worlds’ German mother magazine ‘Cthuloide Welten’ is overseeing the whole process. Worlds of Cthulhu should be in a games shop near you in August. Whilst you are waiting you cna check out Worlds website at: www.worldsofcthulhu.com. Look out for the next appearance of The Black Seal in the next 12 months. The fourth issue will be a special issue titled ‘The Black Seal’s ‘Nam: the conflicts, the land, the people, the mythos’. We will be producing material for the period 1945 to 1975 in Vietnam ranging from character generation to scenarios and mini-campaigns. We will return to our normal mix of material in issue five. In the meantime enjoy this issue’s mix of articles and scenarios. Phil and Sara Whyman Manchester Haunted: Hello Phil and Sara, how are things at the moment with Dead Haunted Nights? Phil Whyman: Hey guys! We're working on some new ideas for 2012, but can't say too much at the moment. Sara Whyman: Hi, we’re just settling down after the Halloween rush, as you can imagine this is our busiest time of year. Like Phil says we have some new ideas that we’re looking at for 2012 and we’re starting to fill up the calendar with bookings. MH: For people who haven’t been on a Dead Haunted Night’s event yet, what can they expect? PW: We're well known for the relaxed and approachable manner in which we run our events, which I think is a vital part of putting our guests at ease (some are pretty nervous!). We aim to give guests a memorable ghost hunting event, where they can participate in such things as seances, glass work experiments, even ouija boards if they want, all under the supervision of our experienced team leaders. Incidentally, for those worried about taking part in experiments all participation is optional. And for peace of mind no team leader is permitted (apart from seances) to take part in any other experiment; as we therefore say, if it happens then it happens for real and not because we are faking anything. We believe we have the best, most trustworthy team leaders in the field working for us. SW: At Dead Haunted we try to give an insight Paranormal Investigation, we look at things more from logical scientific point of view.

“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

When he was fifteen years old Phil believed he had his first paranormal experience when he witnessed the ghost of the family’s pet cat, which truly set him off on his quest to discover more about the paranormal world. In 2002 things really started moving for Phil. After two initial audition stages he was chosen from 1500 applicants to be one of the six on- screen presenters for the hit Living TV series, ‘Scream-Team’. The filming for ‘Scream-Team’ involved Phil travelling the UK investigating reports of ghosts, hauntings, occultism…even UFO’s and alien abductions! Phil’s keen interest and wealth of knowledge that he had shown throughout this series soon brought him to the attention of Antix Productions, where he was to adopt the role for which he is best known for; paranormal expert / presenter for the hugely successful Living TV flagship show, ‘Most Haunted’.

Exploring modern Spiritualism’s theological framework, pointing to its communal belief structure, practices and Seven-Principle doctrine this research articulates its position within society today, exploring notions of re-enchantment where the contemporary individual has become disconnected from formal religious institutions but still possesses a yearning for spiritual nourishment. During early forms of Spiriualism a first-person genuine experience was fundamental to the way in which the spectators framed meaning around what they were viewing. The loss of first person aspect provides a fundamental stance from which to interrogate the shifts that have occurred to Spiritualism as a result of its contemporary representations. Critically the study examines the representation of Spiritualism within the
