Working List of Prairie Restricted (Specialist) Insects in Wisconsin (11/26/2015) By Richard Henderson Research Ecologist, WI DNR Bureau of Science Services Summary This is a preliminary list of insects that are either well known, or likely, to be closely associated with Wisconsin’s original native prairie. These species are mostly dependent upon remnants of original prairie, or plantings/restorations of prairie where their hosts have been re-established (see discussion below), and thus are rarely found outside of these settings. The list also includes some species tied to native ecosystems that grade into prairie, such as savannas, sand barrens, fens, sedge meadow, and shallow marsh. The list is annotated with known host(s) of each insect, and the likelihood of its presence in the state (see key at end of list for specifics). This working list is a byproduct of a prairie invertebrate study I coordinated from1995-2005 that covered 6 Midwestern states and included 14 cooperators. The project surveyed insects on prairie remnants and investigated the effects of fire on those insects. It was funded in part by a series of grants from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. So far, the list has 475 species. However, this is a partial list at best, representing approximately only ¼ of the prairie-specialist insects likely present in the region (see discussion below). Significant input to this list is needed, as there are major taxa groups missing or greatly under represented. Such absence is not necessarily due to few or no prairie-specialists in those groups, but due more to lack of knowledge about life histories (at least published knowledge), unsettled taxonomy, and lack of taxonomic specialists currently working in those groups. -

HABITAT MANAGEMENT PLAN Green Bay and Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuges October 2017 Habitat Management Plans provide long-term guidance for management decisions; set forth goals, objectives, and strategies needed to accomplish refuge purposes; and, identify the Fish and Wildlife Service’s best estimate of future needs. These plans detail program planning levels that are sometimes substantially above current budget allocations and as such, are primarily for Service strategic planning and program prioritization purposes. The plans do not constitute a commitment for staffing increases, operational and maintenance increases, or funding for future land acquisition. The National Wildlife Refuge System, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is the world's premier system of public lands and waters set aside to conserve America's fish, wildlife, and plants. Since the designation of the first wildlife refuge in 1903, the System has grown to encompass more than 150 million acres, 556 national wildlife refuges and other units of the Refuge System, plus 38 wetland management districts. Habitat Management Plan for Green Bay and Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuges EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This Habitat Management Plan (HMP) provides vision and specific guidance on enhancing and managing habitat for the resources of concern (ROC) at the refuge. The contributions of the refuge to ecosystem- and landscape-scale wildlife and biodiversity conservation, specifically migratory waterfowl, are incorporated into this HMP. The HMP is intended to provide habitat management direction for the next 15 years. The HMP is also needed to ensure that the refuge continues to conserve habitat for migratory birds in the context of climate change, which affects all units of the National Wildlife Refuge System. -
Dytiscid Water Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) of the Yukon

LARSON Department of Biology, Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada A1B 3X9 Abstract. One hundred and thirteen species of Dytiscidae (Coleoptera) are recorded from the Yukon Territory. The Yukon distribution, total geographical range and habitat of each of these species is described and multi-species patterns are summarized in tabular form. Several different range patterns are recognized with most species being Holarctic or transcontinental Nearctic boreal (73%) in lentic habitats. Other major range patterns are Arctic (20 species) and Cordilleran (12 species), while a few species are considered to have Grassland (7), Deciduous forest (2) or Southern (5) distributions. Sixteen species have a Beringian and glaciated western Nearctic distribution, i.e. the only Nearctic Wisconsinan refugial area encompassed by their present range is the Alaskan/Central Yukon refugium; 5 of these species are closely confined to this area while 11 have wide ranges that extend in the arctic and/or boreal zones east to Hudson Bay. Résumé. Les dytiques (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) du Yukon. Cent treize espèces de dytiques (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) sont connues au Yukon. Leur répartition au Yukon, leur répartition globale et leur habitat sont décrits et un tableau résume les regroupements d’espèces. La répartition permet de reconnaître plusieurs éléments: la majorité des espèces sont holarctiques ou transcontinentales-néarctiques-boréales (73%) dans des habitats lénitiques. Vingt espèces sont arctiques, 12 sont cordillériennes, alors qu’un petit nombre sont de la prairie herbeuse (7), ou de la forêt décidue (2), ou sont australes (5). -

Commissioned by Thames Water Utilities Limited Clearwater Court Vastern Road Reading RG1 8DB CROSSNESS SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS NATURE RESERVE & SOUTHERN MARSH AQUATIC INVERTEBRATE SURVEY Report number: CPA18054 JULY 2019 Prepared by Colin Plant Associates (UK) Consultant Entomologists 30a Alexandra Rd London N8 0PP 1 1 INTRODUCTION, BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY 1.1 Introduction and background 1.1.1 On 30th May 2018 Colin Plant Associates (UK) were commissioned by Biodiversity Team Manager, Karen Sutton on behalf of Thames Water Utilities Ltd. to undertake aquatic invertebrate sampling at Crossness Sewage Treatment Works on Erith Marshes, Kent. This survey was to mirror the locations and methodology of a previous survey undertaken during autumn 2016 and spring 2017. Colin Plant Associates also undertook the aquatic invertebrate sampling of this previous survey. 1.1.2 The 2016-17 aquatic survey was commissioned with the primary objective of establishing a baseline aquatic invertebrate species inventory and to determine the quality of the aquatic habitats present across both the Nature Reserve and Southern Marsh areas of the Crossness Sewage Treatment Works. The surveyors were asked to sample at twenty-four, pre-selected sample station locations, twelve in each area. Aquatic Coleoptera and Heteroptera (beetles and true bugs) were selected as target groups. A report of the previous survey was submitted in Sept 2017 (Plant 2017). 1.1.3 During December 2017 a large-scale pollution event took place and untreated sewage escaped into a section of the Crossness Nature Reserve. The primary point of egress was Nature Reserve Sample Station 1 (NR1) though because of the connectivity of much of the waterbody network on the marsh other areas were affected. -

Species keys and notes on identification are provided for adults of species that occur or may occur in Wisconsin. Information on distribution and abundance in Wisconsin, habitat, and life cycle is provided for each species based on a study of 27,310 adults. -

HEIKE KAPPES Abstract: Hitherto unpublished field occurrences of Ambigolimax valentianus (FÉRUSSAC 1823) (syn. Lehman- nia valentiana), mainly from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Belgium, are presented. The originally Medi- terranean species is naturalized in the Netherlands, Belgium, and NRW. Variability in coloration, potential taxo- nomic issues and possible confoundings with A. nyctelius (BOURGUIGNAT 1861) are discussed. Keywords: agriculture, biological invasion, citizen science, climate change, garden, Gastropoda, Mollusca Zusammenfassung: Bislang unpublizierte Freilandvorkommen von Ambigolimax valentianus (FÉRUSSAC 1823) (syn. Lehmannia valentiana), überwiegend aus Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) und Belgien, werden vorgestellt. Die ursprünglich mediterrane Art ist in den Niederlanden, Belgien und NRW etabliert. Sèrie Territori i Parcs Naturals 7 IV Trobada d’Estudiosos de la Serralada Litoral Central i VIII del Montnegre i el Corredor Col·lecció Eines Sèrie Territori i Parcs Naturals El 20 i 21 de novembre de 2019 va tenir lloc a Vallgorguina la IV Trobada d’Estudiosos de la Serralada Litoral Central i VIII del Montnegre i el Corredor, amb l’objectiu de donar a conèixer els estudis i recerques duts a terme els últims quatre anys en diferents àmbits de les ciències socials i naturals del territori. En total es van presentar 47 comunicacions que van abordar temes rellevants i innovadors, però també estudis de base o projectes de gestió aplicada per a la conservació d’espècies o per al control d’espècies exòtiques, entre d’altres. Aquests treballs, que amb aquesta publicació tenim l’oportunitat de llegir amb detall, suposen una contribució inestimable per millorar el coneixement de la realitat d’aquests tres parcs, dels seus valors naturals, paisatgístics i culturals, i són de gran utilitat per al personal encarregat de gestionar-los i per a qualsevol persona interessada en la seva conservació.
