PAUL GRABOWSKY SELECTED CREDITS DAISY WINTERS (2017) THE MENKOFF METHOD (2015) WORDS AND PICTURES (2013) EMPIRE FALLS (2005) THE JUNGLE BOOK 2(2003) (Original Songs, Lyrics – “Jungle Rhythm”, “W-I-L-D”, “Jungle Rhythm (Mowgli Solo)”) BIOGRAPHY Paul Grabowsky is a pianist, composer, arranger and conductor, and is one of Australia’s most distinguished artists. Born in Papua New Guinea in 1958, Paul was raised in Melbourne where he attended Wesley College. He began classical piano lessons at the age of five, studying with Mack Jost from 1965-1978. He began informal studies in jazz around 1976, and fully devoted his energies to improvised music from 1978. During the 70’s he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theatre and cabaret projects. He lived in Munich, Germany from 1980-1985, where he was active on the local and European jazz scenes, performing and recording with Johnny Griffin, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Benny Bailey, Guenther Klatt, Marty Cook and many others. He returned to Australia in 1986. In 1983, he formed the Paul Grabowsky Trio, winner of four ARIA awards and one of Australia’s longest-living and most influential jazz ensembles. He has also won two Helpmann awards, several Bell awards and a Deadly award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007. As a performer, he became known for his work with the ‘Wizards of Oz’, a group he co- led with saxophonist Dale Barlow from 1987-1989 and Vince Jones, for whom he was musical director in 1988-89. -

Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

En 2009, le joueur de kora Ballaké Sissoko et le Musique de nuit violoncelliste Vincent Segal décident de saisir dans un album les conversations instrumentales qu’ils aiment tisser à quatre mains depuis 017.2 plusieurs années. « Chamber Music » s’attire un véritable plébiscite critique et public. Six ans après, la complicité au long cours entre les deux SIS hommes résonne plus que jamais dans « Musique de nuit » : cet album est le fruit de deux sessions captées sur le vif, avec un minimum de prises et dévoile ainsi une même liberté en marche et en actes, où se répondent les esprits des musiques mandingues, baroques, brésiliennes, jazz, gitanes… Oum Marocaine d'origine saharienne, Oum impose d'emblée son mélange Zarabi impressionnant de puissance et de sensibilité. De sa voix sensuelle, elle explore la diversité des musiques marocaines qu'elle teinte de soul, de 021.2 rythmes gnaouas et hassani. Inspirée par les musiques de son pays mais OUM aussi par l'Afrique en général et par le jazz, elle révèle une personnalité émouvante, sincère, engagée et développe un univers musical léger dans lequel ses origines sahraouies trouvent écho. "Zarabi" qui signifie tapis en dialecte marocain est un hommage aux tisseuses de tapis. Ces artisanes fabriquent leurs tapis à partir de vêtements usagés et assemblent ainsi la mémoire vestimentaire d'une famille dans une même création. Oum a ressenti une proximité profonde avec son travail de création, de composition et le tissage mémoriel des artisanes. -

It is an annual forum for ideas relating to the creation and performance of Australian music. In the spirit of the great Australian composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks, an outstanding advocate of Australian music delivers the address each year, challenging the status quo and raising issues of importance in new music. In 2012, Michael Kieran Harvey was guest speaker presenting his Address entitled What Would Peggy Do? at the Sydney Conservatorium on 22 October and BMW Edge Fed Square in Melbourne on 2 November 2012. 1 A Message from the Festival Director The Emerging Writers’ Festival has always been a festival for writers. Inspiring, informing and connecting writers of all kinds and at all stages of their career – that’s what we do. In our 2012 festival you will find events programmed with writers in mind. Our two-day Town Hall Writers’ conference continues to grow, with over 80 exciting writers ready to discuss the art and craft of being a writer. We have also introduced a new panel series aimed at demystifying the sometimes confusing publishing world, our Industry Insider discussion sessions. Page Parlour indie press fair will be complemented by Future Bookshop, an interactive exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Plus there will be plenty of time for fun and frolics at our Revenge of the Nerds Slide Night, closing night Spelling Bee and atmospheric Fright Night storytelling event. This year our program features more ways than ever to come along and engage with the festival and network with other writers. Our Festival Hub Rue Bebelons will once again be the place to be – look out for the Late Night Book Clubs! – or you can write up a storm in our Rabbit Hole writing frenzy, join our first-ever Festival Open Mic, or jump online and explore our EWFdigital events. Yup, when we say we’re the festival for writers, we really mean it. Of course, the Festival is just one part in our broader mission to create opportunities for emerging writers. This year we are incredibly excited to present the Monash University Undergraduate Prize for Creative Writing, a prestigious new literary award with a Penguin publishing opportunity attached, and are tickled pink to be offering a writers’ residency program as part of the Future Bookshop. -

Reviewed by Jean-François VERNAY Tim Winton has written his way to become the darling of Australian readers who enjoy his rich prose evocative of the south-western landscape which he calls home. He can be regarded as a left-leaning writer who has a close affinity with the people and es- pecially the land which he celebrates in his stories. His coastal narratives invariably viv- idly depict rural communities functioning in harmony with the beach culture. Winton’s focus is domestic, if not personal, fathoming the cultural and psychological impact of the Australian land. -

Available from Deakin Research Online: http://hdl.handle.net/10536/DRO/DU:30056269 Essay by Lyn McCredden Reading Tim Winton's rollicking, heartbreaking, hopeful saga, Cloudstreet, you are immersed in Australia: its histories, its peoples, its changing values, and its multiple longings. It is Australia imagined large and sprawling, but also in ordinary, intimate detail from a particular dot on the map: working class Perth, Western Australia, from the 1940s to the 1960s. Humorously, lyrically and poignantly, the novel probes questions of where and how to belong. Always already transient and haunted, belonging is a precious but fragile dream, in the midst of family, friends and neighbours. As the Pickles family move into the big, trembling house at number one Cloud Street, It's just them in this vast indoors . there's a war on and people are coming home with bits of them removed . women are walking buggered and beatenlooking with infants in the parks . [the Pickles] have no money and this great continent of a house doesn't belong to them. They're lost. (Winton p. 51) The novel is, of course, only one person's re-imagining of place and time, and for some critics there are omissions, blindnesses and flaws in this vision. However, the fact remains that Author Cloudstreet is a phenomenon; an astoundingly popular novel, made into a television Tim Winton mini-series, adapted to stage, and in 2012 voted the most popular Australian novel by viewers of the ABC's First Tuesday Book Club.
