Federal Hill and Locust Point Announce Light City Displays and Events By Kevin Lynch, SouthBMore.com Both Federal Hill and Locust Point are Neighborhood Lights partners for the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts’ (BOPA) Light City 2018.

In Federal Hill, businesses will be displaying artwork created by local kids. Federal Hill Main Street (FHMS), artists from Future Makers, and BOPA have been collaborating on workshops in neighborhood classrooms and community centers where kids create artwork to be displayed in local Federal Hill businesses. The pieces of artwork are life-size photographic portraits of Federal Hill community members. The pieces will be mounted in framed boxes that are designed and built for storefront windows. Current Federal Hill installation sites include Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Harbor Memory creates a sparkling wetland scenery as a representation of the Homesale Realty, Tradestone before its urban development. FHMS encourages all participants to light up by creating illuminated sculptures, homemade lanterns, stroller floats, bike floats, and their own costumes. Participants can register at fedhill.org/event/ neighborhood-lights-federal-hill.

Immediately following the parade, FHMS, in partnership with the Federal Hill Hospitality and Business Associations, is hosting the Fed Hill Lights After-Party from 830pm-11pm on the unit block of east cross street on the north side Cross Street Market.

The after-party will feature Baltimore bands Outcalls and Super City. There will be drink vendors at this free-to-attend event. Local businesses will also be offering deals, specials, and extended hours.

Locust Point will have an art installation called Harbor Memory created by the XXS group featuring landscape artist, Moya Sun of China. The display will be at Under Armour’s headquarters at 1020 Hull St. The installation will run from April 6th to April 8th. About Harbor Memory from Light City: (see photo above.) DHHS Stands Against Gun Violence by Brianna Carter, Social Studies Teacher

March 14, 2018 marked one month since the horrific school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that resulted in the loss of 17 lives. There was a national call for students to walk out of schools on March 14, but Digital Harbor responded in a way that focused more specifically on the gun violence that plagues our city, and especially how it has and does impact the lives of our students.

At an assembly, student leaders spoke about the importance of the occasion and read a letter directed towards Councilman Brandon Scott, Public Safety Committee Chair, regarding programs that could be implemented or expanded Reasons why you should not buy a to prevent gun violence. watercolor portrait of your home: After several students’ personal testimonies were shared and 46 My home is nothing special to bells were sounded to recognize the average number of children look at. Community Supports Digital Harbor Entry in Kinetic Sculpture Race By Steve Cole Digital Harbor High School, with support from South Baltimore neighborhood groups and volunteers, is preparing to take its inaugural plunge into Baltimore’s Kinetic Sculpture Race, which takes to the harbor and city streets on Saturday, May 5. Competitors in the popular annual event, which is hosted by the American Visionary Art Museum, build imaginative human-powered works of art and peddle them along a 14-mile course around the Inner Harbor that starts and ends next to Digital Harbor. The DHHS Kinetic Sculpture Race project – nicknamed “KSR416” for the school’s official number – is a long-term effort by the high school to build organizational and technical expertise that will sustain this project over many years, with the active Kevin Boone (center), Digital Harbor High School faculty advisor co-lead of the support of the neighboring community. The school’s project, met with community supporters Cathy Strodel, engineer Mark Winters, administration endorsed the project late last year and and other neighborhood volunteers in February at the high school. school staff formed a planning committee that has (Photo: Steve Cole) been meeting with community supporters to lay the foundation for the project. Nicole Veltre and Kevin Boone are the faculty advisors spearheading the project. They have met with students in the Bike Club and Robotics Team about participating. Neighborhood support for KSR416 has been strong. The project’s community lead, Cathy Strodel, organized a fundraising event at the Federal Hill South Neighborhood Association’s annual chili cook-off in January. Donations have come from several individuals and the Riverside and Federal Hill South neighborhood associations. Local businesses and residents have contributed expertise, materials, and fundraising support. Federal Hill residents Mark Winters and Ben Gilardi are leading the engineering team, which is learning that building a kinetic sculpture is a very challenging undertaking. While they are working all out to have KSR416 at the starting line on May 5, it’s possible that the sculpture’s inaugural race will have to wait until 2019.

Bmore Aware: THINK HARD by Aquil Bey, Founder, The Tailored Defense Training Group Favorable temperatures are within reach and the city eagerly awaits this year’s Light City Festival and Opening Day at Camden Yards. Spring is always a great time of year and we relish the traditions of fishing out our favorite jersey and dusting off our lucky caps to conjure up an Orioles win. As we prepare to enjoy the season’s activities, it is important to maintain a sustainable level of awareness so that we do not become victims to those who are just as eager to ruin our day. As mentioned in last month’s article, most criminals want your possessions, your body, or your life. They also look for opportunities that can be concluded quickly, without struggle and without detection. With the thousands of people expected to attend this year’s events, there will be many opportunities for criminals of any level, so take appropriate steps to prevent becoming a victim and enjoy the season. Here are a few tips to avoid victimization. T.H.I.N.K. H.A.R.D.

1. Trust your Instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Don’t be afraid to leave a situation or avoid one entirely, even if it means “offending someone”. Criminals prey on the goodwill of law-abiding citizens and will say things to make you feel guilty. Be aware of this tactic and go with your gut.

2. Have a Backup Plan. The day’s activities will most likely consist of arrival, activity, and departure. You should also plan for contingencies such as intoxication, loss of phone, etc. Having some cash on hand for emergencies is important, but don’t carry too much. Remember, emergency cash is not to be used for drinks, etc., although some may consider that an emergency in itself.

3. Inform Others of Your Whereabouts. If you start the day with other people, be sure to end it that way or at least inform the others of any changes. Far too often, members of a group become separated and mistakenly assume one has decided to head home without saying anything. Don’t assume, confirm this to be true. Consider a group text before you head out as a backup.

4. Never Go Out Alone. The more alcohol we consume, the less likely we are to make sound decisions. It’s helpful if at least one person remains sober to ensure that group decisions are appropriate.

5. Keep Your Phone Charged. The weather will be nice and it’s likely that you’ll be out all day. If you’re constantly updating social media accounts, you’re likely to be out of power before things get started. Consider deactivating applications that are running in the background as well as investing in a small backup battery. You can also carry a power cord and plug in when you can.

6. Hide Your Valuables. This cannot be stressed enough. There will be thousands of people at these events and you have to understand that some will take notice of you and your possessions. This of course can be your intent, but also remember the unintended consequences of attracting anyone looking for their next victim.

7. Assess Potential Outcomes for Your Actions. This is much easier said than done when alcohol is involved. Even if you’re sober, it’s important to think before you act when traveling to an unknown place or in the midst of questionable activity. Things can go bad pretty quickly so ensure you have a backup plan before venturing into the unknown or with people you don’t know.

8. Recognize Your Vulnerabilities. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a Green Beret is to not let my ambitions exceed my capabilities. No one plans to become a victim of a violent crime, but it happens quickly. Be sure to operate within the constraints of your original plan and update it accordingly if things change. Besides, you can play it safe and plan for more fun tomorrow.

9. Don’t Be A Victim. This is easier said than done if you don’t possess the right mindset. If you follow the tips above, you can easily enjoy your time taking in the sights or just enjoying a nice walk throughout the city. Stay safe out there and enjoy yourself.

FHMS Security Initiative by Craig Stoner, President FHMS

Over the past 4 months, Federal Hill Main Street (FHMS) has been listening to the businesses and neighbors of Federal Hill to understand their top priority of issues. FHMS was looking to be involved in more than what we have been in the past. We wanted to become a leader, a sounding voice in the community while still staying bi-partisan on specific topics. In October, we met with FHNA board members to discuss the ongoing issue of trash in the neighborhood, which they felt was a product of the business district. We then talked to the Waterfront Partnership (WP) about bringing some of their services to the Federal Hill business district. With a fee and plan in hand, we started to discuss this with local businesses and tried to iron out funding.

At that same time, crime statistics and the perception of violence in all of Baltimore was quickly swallowing up long-established businesses in the neighborhood. Many businesses have lost 20%-30% of their business since the Freddy Grey riots, and it has yet to return. The conversation turned to how we could curb the crime and change perceptions. We went back to Waterfront Partnership, knowing they offered security services. However, at that time, they were preparing to provide Cleaning and Security Services to Fells Point. While they are looking forward to a possible partnership in the future, they were unable to discuss including Federal Hill. The door remains open for inclusion in the future.

As a result of our meetings, WP provided us with the tools, template and connections we needed to get Security Services off the ground. We came up with a plan and started to bring the business leaders into Join us on Facebook! the fold. The initiative quickly gained ground and a swell of support Look for Federal Hill has grown since January. The Federal Hill Business Association (FHBA) and Federal Hill Hospitality Association (FHHA) boards Neighborhood Association have new leadership that realizes something needs to be done to (FHNA) change the status quo. We have garnered private support from our Team 46 delegates and Councilman. Even the Mayor has recognized the issue, stating that even she has security at her own businesses. DHHS Senior Week February 19-23, 2018 By Dr. Bowden The Class of 2018 celebrated 100 days to graduation with multiple activities. Each day seniors were exempt from uniforms and were able to don theme clothing: twins, oldies (clothes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s), denim, and class colors (purple/black/white). On February 23rd nearly 100 students were treated to a luncheon for being on the GREEN LIST, meaning they are totally on track for graduation, according to Dr. Bowden, class administrator. That day seniors acted as guides for 9th graders as they chose their technology pathways. On February 24th guys and gals, under the leadership of Mr. Ober, class advisor, teamed up with Home Depot (through contacts with Ms. Veltre) to construct outdoor furniture, which will be put in the area near the ship’s prow behind the school. The wall there will be decorated with school symbols and the general area will be beautified. Also on the 24th a busload of seniors saw the popular movie BLACK PANTHER, very appropriate because a black panther is the mascot of the Class of 2018. Outdoor furniture constructed by Seniors Finally on February 23rd –100 days before graduation – seniors played active and table games and enjoyed music and a reception in the cafeteria.

Some seniors are scrambling to meet the March 1st deadline for completing FAFSA for college financial aid. According to Ms. Weeks, class counselor, many seniors have already received college acceptances and have collectively been promised nearly $1 million in scholarships and aid. Seniors and juniors are buying early-bird prom tickets and class rings. Senior portraits have been taken, the yearbook goes to press soon, and the class is counting the days to graduation on June 3, 2018. Additional class advisors are Ms. Davis, Ms. Gluth, Ms. Jasani, Ms. Melton, and Ms. O. Smith.

Kayla Pssssst, hooman....yes, you. I couldn’t help but notice that your lap is looking a little lonely, and I am currently without a lap. Perhaps there is a way to remedy this situation? They call me Kayla the Kiss Stealer, and I’m here to spread cuddles and cuteness to all who cross my path! If you’re looking for a loving, loyal lapdog – then I’m your lady. As a hopeless romantic, I enjoy long walks, fine food, and destroying toys. I recently underwent minor surgery and am healing fast – and doctor’s orders are for me to find my forever home, STAT!

Love may have no boundaries, but I’m figuring out that I get extra love when I follow the rules. I get more belly rubs when I don’t bark, and more pets when I don’t pull. While I have enough love to go around, I’d prefer to be in a one-pup household, and I find cats to be curious (and quite chase-able) creatures. That said, I currently co-habitate with both a dog and a cat, and with consistent guidance, I’m learning how to share my people.

If you’re looking for love, then steal away with me, Kayla. I’ll make sure you know how kissable you are!

If you’d like to take me home, please fill out an adoption application at this website -http://www.animalalliesrescue.org/adoption- application and choose me – Kayla! My adoption fee is $300 and includes all of my routine vetting, rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations, FelV/FIV testing (kitties), deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention, microchip, boarding and transportation costs if applicable, along with a free* trial offer for 30 days of 24PetWatch pet insurance!

Moo Feeling mooooooved to add some feline flair to your life? I’m Moo Kitty, and I might be the friend you need to chew the cud with! I had a pretty rough time before coming to AARF – I was found badly burned and needed surgery to get back on my feet – but now I’m completely healed, healthy, and looking for a kind human family who will spoil me, so I can spoil them back.

After a pretty tumultuous turn as a kitten, I really appreciate the simple life now – birdwatching, sunbathing, and toy-chasing. And you can call me selfish, but I want to have your attention all to myself – a home without other cats or young children would be ideal. Because let’s be honest, I deserve to squeeze in all the love I can!

Don’t let the grass grow under your feet – come and meet me, Moo Kitty, today. We have a lot of sunrises and sunsets to catch!

Beyond the Hill - Adventures in Global Home Cooking April: Italy By Andy Monick

This month, we will prepare a classic – but lesser-known – Italian dish, pasta e ceci. Pasta e ceci translates to pasta and chickpeas – and the dish, somewhere between pasta and stew, is as easy as that. Though these two may sound like an unusual combination, together they comprise a common meal in Rome. Although related to the also-ubiquitous pasta e fagioli (pasta and beans), the chickpeas provide a heartier texture. A splash of oil at the end of the cooking process provides healthy fat to round out the meal. While the two fundamental ingredients remain the same, this recipe has room for a great deal of variation, and is prepared differently across the country. Try adding your favorite allium in addition to or in place of garlic, or additional fresh herbs that you may have sitting around in your refrigerator. I added chopped kale for a kick of vitamins! Although you can use any type of pasta, I recommend small, shaped pieces – such as elbow, farfalle, or dilatini. Enjoy! Pasta e Ceci Prep: 5 minutes Cook: 10 minutes Ingredients 1. In a medium pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and celery. 2 T olive oil Stir for three minutes. ½ small yellow onion, diced small 2 stalks celery, finely chopped 2. Add the garlic and, if using, anchovy. Stir for an additional minute. 6 cloves garlic, minced 3. Add the tomato paste, salt, and ground black and red pepper. Stir vigorously for 30 1 anchovy, finely chopped (optional) seconds. ¼ c + 2 T tomato paste 1 T salt 4. Add the pasta, chickpeas, and water, scraping the bottom of the pot. 1 T ground pepper ½ t red pepper flakes 5. Allow to simmer for 20-30 minutes, or until most of the liquid has been absorbed. 1 ½ c uncooked pasta of choice 3 cups chickpeas 6. Meanwhile, heat the remaining 2 T of olive oil, garlic, thyme, salt, and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan over medium heat. Remove as soon as garlic begins to 4 cups water brown.

Finishing Oil 7. Season pasta e ceci to taste. Serve drizzled with finishing oil. 2 T olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ T fresh thyme or rosemary, minced ¼ t salt ¼ t red pepper flakes
