    Frequency Finder (www.frequencyfinder.org.uk) Opinion: The Future of AM Radio England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Summary AM radio in the British Isles is now in terminal decline and may be discontinued completely during the mid-to-late 2020s. With the BBC subject to budget cuts and commercial stations vulnerable to a potential advertising recession, all broadcasters will be looking to reduce their AM transmission costs. Inevitably, those stations with a relatively small proportion of their listening via AM are likely to close their AM transmitters before those stations with much larger AM audiences. This article explores how this process could be managed smoothly so that AM transmission costs are gradually reduced in proportion to the number of listeners continuing to use AM. For high-power transmitters, substantial cost savings can be made by simply reducing the transmission power; a 50% reduction would have minimal impact on audience size. For low-power transmitters, there are two issues to consider: the audience size for each transmitter and the number of transmitters operating at that site. The more low-power transmitters that share a site, the lower the operating cost per transmitter. Thus, closure decisions should be based on cost per AM listener and coordination between different broadcasters is needed. With 26 major broadcasters’ AM transmitters closed in 2018, 33 closed in 2020 and at least 21 closing during 2021, this process has now begun. Background AM was the dominant listening medium for radio in the British Isles until the mid 1980s, when it was overtaken by FM. In the early 1990s, with improvements in FM coverage and wide access to FM radios, it was decided to mostly abandon simulcasting in the UK and launch new stations on AM.

    SECRETARY OF STATE SWITCHES ON DIGITAL EXPANSION AND LAUNCHES NATIONAL RETUNE INITIATIVE LONDON, MARCH 2016: The Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, Rt Hon John Whittingdale MP, today signalled a major expansion of choice and coverage of DAB digital radio stations for over 20 million households at an industry conference, Drive to Digital: National Now, hosted by talkSPORT presenter, Colin Murray. Mr Whittingdale performed the official switch-on of the UK’s second national DAB digital radio multiplex network alongside Steve Holebrook, Managing Director of Arqiva Terrestrial Broadcast and Chairman of Sound Digital. Mr Whittingdale also launched a national retune campaign, pressing Digital Radio UK’s big green retune button and urging listeners to retune their digital radios to take full advantage of the range of services now available. The new network from Sound Digital, a joint venture company formed by Arqiva, Bauer Media and Wireless Group, will feature 18 digital radio stations, with 11 now on -air and the remaining seven launching by the end of March. In conversation with Planet Rock Breakfast presenter, Paul Anthony, the Secretary of State welcomed the expansion of choice and coverage, emphasising the significance of this launch for the radio industry. In further content news, the conference heard about new station Heart extra from Global, a national brand extension of Heart, which launched this week on the Digital One DAB network, whilst the BBC confirmed the launch of BBC 2 Radio Country, a four-day national digital radio pop-up station running from 10 -13 March to coincide with the C2C Festival.

    A Technical Overview of Digital Radio Stephen Baily BBC Research and Development Kingswood Warren, Tadworth, KT20 6NP, United Kingdom ABSTRACT As a service, Digital Radio sets out to broadcast digital audio (and also other data) to fixed, mobile and portable receivers. In the UK, most of Europe and many other countries around the world, the favoured technology for this purpose is DAB1 – the first system designed specifically for this purpose. This paper provides an overview of the technical issues, and the solutions used by DAB. Finally, it describes the current status of Digital Radio in the United Kingdom, as well as some future developments in terms of services and technology. INTRODUCTION – THE MOVITATION FOR DIGITAL RADIO Existing analogue radio services (AM and FM) can provide good quality sound under favourable reception conditions. Unfortunately, when conditions are less favourable, AM and FM broadcasts suffer a loss of sound quality. Obvious examples of this include: - night-time fading experienced on AM radio; - signals reflected from buildings or hills (multipath propagation) causing distortion of FM radio; - electrical interference, from domestic equipment or motor vehicles, causing unwanted bursts of noise on the received sound. Digital broadcasting offers the opportunity to deliver a signal from broadcaster to receiver without any such loss of quality. In addition, the use of a digital system allows broadcasters to offer a completely new range of data services to accompany audio programming. These can allow the radio medium to remain attractive to consumers at a time when it faces increasing competition, most notably from the internet. RADIO FREQUENCY CHALLENGES Digital broadcasting systems such as DAB must include measures to combat the effects of multipath propagation, Doppler spread and interference, to ensure that the required information reaches the receiver intact under the largest possible set of receiving circumstances.
