To demonstrate the particular impact of these perceptions in Japan, the authors compare them with those in the United States, a country where many more children are born outside wedlock. -

Social Determinants of Health in Non-Communicable Diseases Case Studies from Japan Springer Series on Epidemiology and Public Health
Springer Series on Epidemiology and Public Health Katsunori Kondo Editor Social Determinants of Health in Non-communicable Diseases Case Studies from Japan Springer Series on Epidemiology and Public Health Series Editors Wolfgang Ahrens, Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology—BIPS, Bremen, Germany Iris Pigeot, Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology—BIPS, Bremen, Germany The series has two main aims. First, it publishes textbooks and monographs addressing recent advances in specific research areas. Second, it provides comprehensive overviews of the methods and results of key epidemiological studies marking cornerstones of epidemiological practice, which are otherwise scattered across numerous narrow-focused publications. Thus the series offers in-depth knowledge on a variety of topics, in particular, on epidemiological concepts and methods, statistical tools, applications, epidemiological practice and public health. It also covers innovative areas such as molecular and genetic epidemiology, statistical principles in epidemiology, modern study designs, data management, quality assurance and other recent methodological developments. Written by the key experts and leaders in corresponding fields, the books in the series offer both broad overviews and insights into specific areas and topics. The series serves as an in-depth reference source that can be used complementarily to the “The Handbook of Epidemiology,” which provides a starting point of orientation for interested readers (2nd edition published in 2014 http://www.springer.com/public+health/ book/978-0-387-09835-7). The series is intended for researchers and professionals involved in health research, health reporting, health promotion, health system administration and related aspects. It is also of interest for public health specialists and researchers, epidemiologists, physicians, biostatisticians, health educators, and students worldwide. -

Pardieck† Abstract: Problems with sub-prime loans roiled financial markets worldwide in 2007 and brought renewed attention to predatory lending practices by loan brokers in the United States. Questionable lending practices, however, plague consumer financial markets worldwide, including one of the largest, found in Japan. This Article addresses the Japanese response to systemic problems in its consumer finance market. Over the last forty years, the judiciary has led and the Diet followed. Most recently, in 2006, the Supreme Court handed down a series of decisions that turned the single most important earnings driver for the consumer finance industry into dead letter law. The Diet followed with legislative revisions. -

Persons Or Things? Fetal Liminality in Japan's History
Persons or Things? Fetal Liminality in Japan's History Victoria Philibert April 29th, 2016 for submission to CAPI PERSONS OR THINGS? FETAL LIMINALITY IN JAPAN'S HISTORY PHILIBERT, 1 Persons or Things? Fetal Liminality in Japan's History Victoria Philibert* ● [email protected] University of Victoria ABSTRACT As a prenatal human between baby and embryo, the fetus is necessarily an in-between entity whose human status can be called into question. In the West, this liminality informs debates surrounding the ethics and law of abortion, the politics of reproduction, and the development of feminist and maternalist ideologies. This paper examines the genealogy of the fetus in the Japanese context to elucidate how this liminality has been negotiated in both spiritual and secular dimensions. It proceeds through an comparative analysis of the fetus' place in the Shinto and Buddhist traditions in Japan, and briefly examines how these origins are made manifest in contemporary rituals of mizuko kuyō 水子供養 (fetus memorial services) and the use of hanayomenuigyō 花嫁繍業 (bride dolls). The paper then examines the changing culture of infanticide in the Edo to Meiji periods, how this shift precipitates new developments in the modern era of Japan, and argues that current paradigms of investigation exclude nuance or holistic understandings of maternity as valid contributions to fetal topologies. Keywords: natalism; fetus; Japan; Barbara Johnson; abortion; maternity; mizuko kuyō; fetus memorial services; hanayomenuigyō; bride-dolls; infanticide, initiation rituals, mabiki; infanticide The fetus is a liminal being, one that is treated as both object and subject by human beings depending on the context. This ambiguity of the fetus is stationed as the cornerstone of persistent debates from the political to the sacred. -
