The bivalve fossils collected by Japanese-Norwegian research groups from the Kapp Starostin Formation in west Spitsbergen are described. They comprise fourteen species belonging to the pterioida and two speCies of the Arcoida. Among them, six species, including two that are indeterminate, are newly described. They are Grammatodon (Cosmetodon)? suzuki;' G. (C.)? sp. ind., Streblochondria win­ snesi, Vorkutopecten svalbardensis, Deltopecten sp. ind., and Palaeolima nakamurai. The fauna belongs to the Boreal bioprovince, but a single species, Cassianoides sexcostatus (Stuckenberg) has also been reported from the Central Rocky Mountains of the United States. The bivalve fauna suggests an Artinskian-Kungurian age for the Kapp Starostin Formation. This is somewhat earlier than the age deduced from brachiopods and bryozoans, but it is not decisive because the materials are poor. The Kapp Starostin Formation is conformably overlain by the Otoceras-bearing, earliest Triassic Vardebukta Formation, so a time-gap corresponding at least to the Dorashamian and Dzhulfian (= Tatarian) is inferred between the two formations.     First remains of Diplocynodon cf. ratelii from the early Miocene sites of Ahníkov (Most Basin, Czech Republic) Milan Chroust, Martin MazuCh, Martin ivanov, Boris Ekrt & ÀngEl h. luján Fossil crocodylians from the early Miocene (Eggenburgian, MN3a) sites of Ahníkov (Most Basin, Czech Republic) are described in this paper. The new material presented here includes over 200 remains (bones, teeth and osteoderms), and therefore constitutes the largest crocodylian sample known from the fossil record of the Czech Republic. Assignment of the specimens to the fossil alligatoroid taxon Diplocynodon cf. ratelii Pomel, 1847 (family Diplocynodontidae) is justified by the presence of several cranial and postcranial features. In the Czech Republic, this species has been previously reported only from the Tušimice site (MN3, Most Basin, Ohře/Eger Graben). The majority of the material reported from Ahníkov is composed of disarticulated juvenile individuals. Both sites are most likely attributable to the specific environment of swampy areas, where crocodile hatchlings would hide from predators. The presence of the genus Diplocynodon supports the assumption of rather warm climatic conditions in Central Europe during the early to middle Miocene, as well as a swampy depositional environment previously inferred for Ahníkov. However, some squamate taxa suggest the existence of additional, surrounding palaeoenvironment characterised by a more open landscape with slightly drier conditions. • Key words: fossil crocodiles, alligatoroid, Ahníkov, Ohře/Eger Graben, Eggenburgian. Discovery of chemosynthesis-based association on the Cretaceous basal leatherback sea turtle from Japan. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 62 (4): 683–690. We report a Late Cretaceous chemosynthetic community fueled by decomposing basal leatherback sea turtle on the ocean floor in the western Pacific. The fossil association representing this community has been recovered from the matrix of a concretion containing a single carapace of Mesodermochelys sp. from Late Cretaceous outer shelf to upper slope deposit of northern Hokkaido, Japan. The carapace displays boreholes most likely performed by boring bivalves, and is associated with molluscan shells, mainly Provanna cf. nakagawensis and Thyasira tanabei. Since this association is similar to fauna already known from Late Cretaceous hydrocarbon seeps, sunken wood, and plesiosaur-falls in Hokkaido, it is suggested that all types of chemosynthesis-based communities in the Late Cretaceous of western Pacific may have belonged to the same regional pool of animals and were not yet fully differentiated into three independent types of com- munities as it is known today. This finding also indicates that the sulfophilic stage of the vertebrate-fall communities was supported not only by plesiosaur carcasses, which were previously reported, but also by sea turtle carcasses. It highlights the possibility of surviving vertebrate-fall communities through the end-Cretaceous mass extinction event on carcasses of sea turtles which are the only large marine vertebrates surviving this event.

Correo-e: [email protected] (FECHA DE RECEPCIÓN: 2008-04-01) (FECHA DE ADMISIÓN: 2008-04-15) BIBLID [0211-8327 (2008) 44 (1); 91-140] RESUMEN: El estudio de los pectínidos (Bivalvia, Mollusca) en sedimentos pliocenos de la Cuenca de Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz, SO España) permite determinar 13 especies, agrupadas en 8 géneros, ampliando la información previa en la zona de esta familia de bivalvos en 5 especies. La presencia de M. pesfelis, F. flexuosus, P. excisum, P. jacobaeus y P. maximus nos permite confirmar y corroborar la edad de Plioceno aportada por la microfauna. A su vez, la existencia de M. latissima, P. benedictus y P. excisum nos permite acotar la posición cronoestratigráfica hasta cerca de los 3,0 Ma. Las asociaciones dominantes en los sedimentos pliocenos apuntan a medios marinos someros, con fondos detríticos y energías variables, sometidos a la acción de tormentas, corroborado por la impronta tafonómica, como pueden ser sistemas de playa- duna y ambientes submareales donde se desarrollan barras y canales. ABSTRACT: This study has been carried out in pectinids (Bivalvia, Mollusca) of pliocene sediments from Vejer de la Frontera basin (Cádiz, SW Spain).     New Late Cretaceous mammals of southern Kazakhstan ALEXANDER 0. AVERIANOV Averianov, A.O. 1997. New Late Cretaceous mammals of southern Kazakhstan. -Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 42,2,243-256. Mammalian remains from the lower part of the Darbasa Formation (lower Campanian) at the 'Grey Mesa' locality in the Alymtau Range, southern Kazakhstan, are described. They include ?Bulganbaatar sp. (Multituberculata), Deltatheridiurn nessovi, sp. n. @el- tatheroida), and four eutherians: an undeterminated ?otlestid kemalestoid (?Otlestidae), ?Alymlestes sp. (Zalambdalestidae), ?Aspanlestes sp. (Zhelestidae), and an undetermi- nated eutherian. This new Cretaceous fauna is most similar to that from the Djadokhta Formation in Mongolia and may tentatively confirm an early Campanian age for the latter. Introduction Mesozoic mammals from Kazakhstan are poorly known. The first Mesozoic mammal from Kazakhstan (and the first from the former USSR), found in 1962, is a mandibular fragment with heavily damaged molars, the holotype of Beleutinus orl~vi(?Zalamb- dalestidae), from the Santonian Bostobe Formation at Zhalmauz Well, Kyzyl-Orda Region (Bazhanov 1972). Since that time only three additional mammal remains have been recognized from the Cretaceous of Kazakhstan: a cervical vertebra of a relatively large, undeterminated mammal from the Zhalmauz locality (Nessov & Khisarova 1988); a dentary fragment with p5, ml-3, the holotype of Sorlestes kara (Zhelestidae), from the drilling core penetrating lower Turonian deposits near Ashchikol' Lake, Chimkent Region (Nessov 1993); and a lower molar (ml), the holotype of Alymlestes kielanae (Zalambdalestidae) from the lower part (Campanian) of the Darbasa Forma- tion at the 'Grey Mesa' locality in the Alymtau Range, Chimkent Region (Averianov & Nessov 1995).
