LEXICON VOLUME 2 Number 1, April 2013 Page 57 - 65 THE Misery OF WAR AS SEEN IN STEPHEN CRANE’S WAR IS KIND AND Walt WHITMAN’S DIRGE FOR TWO VETERANS Luqman Nur Chandra INTISARI Artikel ini mendiskusikan hasil penelitian terhadap dua puisi, yaitu puisi berjudul War is Kind yang ditulis oleh Stephen Crane dan Dirge for Two Veterans yang ditulis oleh Walt Whitman. Tema yang terkandung di dalam kedua puisi tersebut adalah perang. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan kesedihan yang disebabkan oleh perang dan untuk membandingkan cara kedua puisi tersebut di dalam mengekspresikan tema tentang perang.Pendekatan yang di- gunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan objektif. Pendekatan ini dipilih karena analisis hanya berdasar kepada elemen-elemen yang ditemukan di dalam puisi. Metode yang digunakan di dalam penelitian ini adalah studi perpustakaan. Kemudian metode deskriptif diterapkan untuk menjelaskan puisi secara deskriptif melalui interpretasi tiap bait di dalam puisi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kesedihan yang disebabkan oleh perang itu nyata dan mempengaruhi banyak orang di dalamnya. Baik puisi War is Kind ataupun Dirge for Two Veterans sama-sama menggambarkan tentang kematian dan kesedihan yang disebabkan oleh perang, walaupun dengan ekspresi yang sedikit berbeda. War is Kind menonjolkan ironi bahwa ‘perang itu baik’ untuk memunculkan kesan yang sangat buruk. Penggunaan ironi ini mencoba mempengaruhi pembaca untuk menghakimi bahwa perang sangatlah buruk. Dirge for Two Veterans juga menunjukkan bahwa kematian merupakan konsekuensi dari perang. Namun dalam puisi ini kesedihan digambarkan sebagai sesuatu yang harus bisa dihadapi walaupun menimbulkan ke- takutan dan menghantui pikiran. Kata Kunci: kesedihan, perang, kematian, ironi ABSTRACT This article discusses two poems, a Stephen Crane’s poem entitled War is Kind and a Walt Whitman’s poem entitled Dirge for Two Veterans. -

It has governed the way the United States has organized, planned, and conducted military operations for the last twenty five years. It passed the Senate and House of Representatives with margins of victory reserved for birthday and holiday resolutions. It is praised throughout the U.S. defense establishment as a universal good. Despite this, it engendered a strong opposition movement organized primarily by Navy Secretary John F. Lehman but also included members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, prominent Senators and Congressman, and President Reagan's Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger. This essay will examine the forty year background of defense reform movements leading to the Goldwater Nichols Act, the fight from 1982 to 1986 by supporters and opponents of the proposed legislation and its twenty-five year legacy that may not be as positive as the claims made by the Department of Defense suggest. -

A closer examination, however, of another Roosevelt presidency – that of Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) – demonstrates the degree to which black voters were already growing disenchanted with the Republicans in the face of what they viewed as uneven support and contradictory messages from the highest ranking Republican in the land. Though the perception of Theodore Roosevelt‘s relationship to black Americans has been dominated by his historic invitation of Booker T. Washington to dine with him at the White House in 1901, in fact even this event had assorted and complex meanings for Roosevelt‘s relationship to the black community. More importantly, his dismissal of black troops following a controversial shooting in southern Texas in 1906 – an event known as the Brownsville affair – set off a firestorm of bitter protest from the black press, black intellectuals, and black voters. -

fdr4freedoms 1 Theodore Roosevelt, who was president from 1901 to 1909, 1. Franklin D. and Woodrow Wilson, who occupied the office from 1913 to 1921, inspired, guided, and taught Franklin D. Roosevelt. TR, a distant cousin some twenty-five years older than FDR, showed Roosevelt’s Models: him how a president could dominate the American political landscape and, through the force of his personality, redefine the presidency and America’s place in the world. Wilson’s Theodore Roosevelt regulation of corporate trusts, banks, and the money supply showed FDR how effective a president could be as legislator. FDR watched their triumphs and learned even more from their and Woodrow Wilson failures. These two leaders, more than anyone, helped shape FDR’s vision as president. FDR followed the examples of TR and Wilson because he shared their fundamental strengths and values. Growth of Presidential Power A. Article II of the Constitution 1. Article II is the part of the Constitution that deals with the Executive Branch. 2. Article II is basically just a short outline of powers. 3. A large part of America’s early political history deals with defining the extent of the executive power. B. The Changing View of Presidential Power 1. Why Presidential Power Has Grown -The presidency is in the hands of one person, rather than many, and many Presidents have worked to expand the powers of their office. -As the country grew and industrialized, especially in times of emergency, people demanded that the Federal Government play a larger role and looked to the President for leadership. -Congress has delegated much authority to the President, although presidential control over foreign affairs is greater than it is over domestic affairs. Congress simply continues to assert itself in the implementation of social programs. -Presidents have the attention and general respect of the media, the public, and their own party. C. How Presidents Have Viewed Their Power 1. Stronger and more effective Presidents have taken a broad view of the powers of the office. 2. Teddy Roosevelt viewed his broad use of Presidential powers as the “Stewardship Theory”, which means that the President should have the power to act as a “steward” over the country. 3. Recent, very strong presidents have given rise to the phrase “Imperial Presidency”, which implies that the President becomes as strong as an emperor. The term is often used to refer to the administration of Richard Nixon. -

Classic Poetry Series Stephen Crane - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Stephen Crane(November 1, 1871 – June 5, 1900) an American novelist, short story writer, poet and journalist. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. The eighth surviving child of Methodist Protestant parents, Crane began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16. Having little interest in university studies, he left school in 1891 and began work as a reporter and writer. Crane's first novel was the 1893 Bowery tale Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which critics generally consider the first work of American literary Naturalism. He won international acclaim for his 1895 Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without any battle experience. In 1896, Crane endured a highly publicized scandal after acting as witness for a suspected prostitute. Late that year he accepted an offer to cover the Spanish- American War as a war correspondent. As he waited in Jacksonville, Florida for passage to Cuba, he met Cora Taylor, the madam of a brothel, with whom he would have a lasting relationship. While en route to Cuba, Crane's ship sank off the coast of Florida, leaving him adrift for several days in a dinghy. His ordeal was later described in "The Open Boat". During the final years of his life, he covered conflicts in Greece and lived in England with Cora, where he befriended writers such as Joseph Conrad and H. -
