  • The Independent Producer: Michael Klinger and New Film History
RESEARCH ARTICLE Creativity and commerce: Michael Klinger and new film history Andrew Spicer* School of Creative Arts, University of the West of England, Bristol BS3 2JT, UK The crisis in film studies and history concerning their legitimacy and objectives has provoked a reinvigoration of scholarly energy in historical enquiry. „New film history‟ attempts to address the concerns of historians and film scholars by working self-reflexively with an expanded range of sources and a wider conception of „film‟ as a dynamic set of processes rather than a series of texts. The practice of new film history is here exemplified through a detailed case study of the independent British producer Michael Klinger (active 1961-1987) with a specific focus on his unsuccessful attempt to produce a war film, Green Beach, based on a memoir of the Dieppe raid (August 1942). This case study demonstrates the importance of analysing the producer‟s role in understanding the complexities of film-making, the continual struggle to balance the competing demands of creativity and commerce. In addition, its subject matter – an undercover raid and a Jewish hero – disturbed the dominant myths concerning the Second World War, creating what turned out to be intractable ideological as well as financial problems. The paper concludes that the concerns of film historians need to engage with broader cultural and social histories. Keywords: British film industry; film history; film producers; Second World War; Jewishness; Michael Klinger; Green Beach 1 *Email [email protected] The crisis in film studies, historiography, and new film history As a discipline, film studies is currently experiencing a crisis of legitimation.

The award-winning Stasi-film uses similar narrative paradigms to Schindler’s List and The Pianist, thereby invoking the association between Stasi and Nazi and exploiting familiar cinematic stereotypes. Like in these ‘Greuelmärchen’ (Bathrick, 2000), historical truth is sacrificed for melodrama and suspense. Das Leben der Anderen re-imagines the burdened and traumatic memory of the Stasi as a universal tale of redemption.

  • The Fantastic Figure of Yul Brynner. Forthcoming in Screen. Susanna
1 Striking poses: The fantastic figure of Yul Brynner. Forthcoming in Screen. Susanna Paasonen Abstract Since his successful 1956 appearances in the Hollywood films The King and 1 (Walter Lang), Ten Commandments (Cecil B. DeMille) and Anastasia (Anatole Litvak), Yul Brynner’s star image emerged as elaborately masculine, foreign and exotic, as well as markedly flexible in the range of ethnicities that it was set to convey. Combined with his varying mythical tales of international origins and sexual prowess, Brynner’s intense gestural register and striking body aesthetic, as encapsulated in the trademark baldness, rendered the actor a spectacular sight in 1950s Hollywood. In fact Brynner’s mere physical presence dominates many of his films in ways suggestive of elasticity between acting and presence, role and actor – as well as of the centrality of screen presence more generally. This article explores Brynner’s fantastic cinematic figure image in terms of its fabrication, flexibility and reappearance by examining both his film work and biographical accounts. It tracks transformations and continuities in Brynner’s performance style with specific attention on its idiosyncratic and repetitive elements in terms of pose, gesture and motion, with the aim of foregrounding the role of physicality – both material and represented – in the creation of star image. *** There he stands, Rameses, the future Pharaoh of Egypt, back straight, topless except for cape and heavy ornamental jewellery, glaring at Moses. There, the King of Siam pouts in his palace, decorative silk coat open to reveal an expanse of shaved, muscular torso. There, the brash Cossack Taras Bulba stands, enraged, his sleeves up and hairy chest exposed, pulling out a sword with angular motions.
