OPTIMIZATION OF AN INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM FOR FRUIT FLIES (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE) CONTROL IN MANGO: A CASE OF MANICA PROVINCE, MOZAMBIQUE LAURA DA GRAҪA JOSÉ CANHANGA A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY OF SOKOINE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE. MOROGORO, TANZANIA. 2018 ii EXTENDED ABSTRACT This study was undertaken to reduce the losses caused by Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) in Manica province, Mozambique, through an optimized integrated pest management (IPM) package. It involved interviews with farmers to collect baseline information on awareness of fruit producers regarding fruit fly pests and their management so that an IPM package can be developed based on the farmers’ needs. Additionally, systematic trapping data of B. dorsalis seasonality and damage were collected and economic injury level (EIL) for B. dorsalis was estimated. Based on EIL, the IPM for B. dorsalis control developed in Tanzania by the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA IPM) was optimized. The SUA IPM included calendar GF 120 NF bait sprays and orchard sanitation while for the optimized IPM the GF 120 NF was only sprayed in the subplots inside the orchard when the threshold of 30 flies/trap/week was reached. The effectiveness of SUA IPM and its optimized version were also tested. Results showed that fruit flies were the main pest problem in mango and citrus orchards. More than 70% the respondents indicated low fruit quality and increasing volumes of uncommercial zed fruits as consequences of fruit flies infestation. The monetary value of losses reached a value of USD 135,784.8 during 2014/15 mango season. -

McPheron Department of Entomology, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802, USA Received 29 March 2005; revised 3 October 2005; accepted 5 October 2005 Abstract The Afrotropical fruit Xy genus Ceratitis MacLeay is an economically important group that comprises over 89 species, subdivided into six subgenera. Cladistic analyses of morphological and host use characters have produced several phylogenetic hypotheses for the genus. Only monophyly of the subgenera Pardalaspis and Ceratitis (sensu stricto) and polyphyly of the subgenus Ceratalaspis are common to all of these phylogenies. In this study, the hypotheses developed from morphological and host use characters are tested using gene trees pro- duced from DNA sequence data of two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase I and NADH-dehydrogenase subunit 6) and a nuclear gene (period). Comparison of gene trees indicates the following relationships: the subgenus Pardalaspis is monophyletic, subsection A of the subgenus Pterandrus is monophyletic, the subgenus Pterandrus may be either paraphyletic or polyphyletic, the subgenus Ceratalaspis is polyphyletic, and the subgenus Ceratitis s. s. might not be monophyletic. In addition, the genera Ceratitis and Trirhithrum do not form reciprocally monophyletic clades in the gene trees. Although the data statistically reject monophyly for Trirhithrum under the Shimoda- ira–Hasegawa test, they do not reject monophyly of Ceratitis. 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Psyt- talia masneri, sp. n., was reared from fruits of Dracaena fragrans (L.) Ker Gawl. (Liliaceae) infested with Taomyia marshalli Bezzi in western Kenya. Psyttalia masneri is the only opiine braconid known to attack members of the genus Taomyia. Unusual morphological features of P. masneri and its host are detailed. Psyttalia halidayi, sp. n., was reared from fruits of Lettowianthus stellatus Diels (Annonaceae) infested with Ceratitis rosa Karsch in coastal Kenya. Psyttalia halidayi is morphologically similar to several described species of Psyttalia that have previously been used in the biological control of tephritid pests. -

Abstract This work discusses the transition in the politics and economics of irrigation farming in the Jos area of Plateau state, Nigeria. Examining the former and latter constructions of ownership, use, commerce and authority of land and products of obtained from it. The advent of commercial dry season farming called “fadama” or “lambu” in the Plateau area around the 1980’s produced a new group of temporary migrants. Itinerant farmers from the far north, who took advantage of the deserted mining ponds in and around Jos, the capital of Plateau state in Central Nigeria. This development saw the periodical use by the mainly Hausa farmers from the far north, of land in the dry season, slowly building a community in consonance with a few settled Fulani.2 A new landlord-tenant relationship emerged, which saw the “tenants” relating well with their hosts, the autochthonous “land owners” who initially were quite oblivious of this new mode of irrigation, This relationship lasted until the 1990’s when skirmishes and emerging interests of the autochthons groups brought conflict between the two groups. -

Abstract This study attempt to examine the Railway as a major factor in the development of Kafanchan town. The institution was brought into existence by the colonial government. It was one of the first transport infrastructure put in place by the colonial government, to facilitate administration and exploitation of both agric-influence and mineral resources. From onset, the colonial authorities had realized that the traditional means of transport could not sustain and promote an expanding market economy. Lugard anticipated the opinion of administration when he said that, “the material development of Africa may be summed up in one word, transport. Modern transport was needed to stimulate and handle rapidly increasing export and import volumes, and also to facilitate administrative control of the colony by easing the movement of colonial troops from place to place. One major effect of the railway is that it considerably rewrote to place. One major effect of the railway is that it considerably rewrote the economy geography of Nigeria. It also drastically drew traffic from the waterways to itself. The focus of this paper is to examine the role of the railway as a major factor in the growth and development of Kafanchan town. The railway institution was one of the first infrastructures put into place by the colonial government to facilitate in the exploitation of agriculture and mineral resources. If the colonial government was said to have brought any economic revolution in Kafanchan and by extension Nigeria it was through the construction of railways. -
Geotourism and Mining Heritage: a Potential Gold Mine for Central Nigeria

UMBUGADI Department of Geology and Mining, Nasarawa State University, Nigeria (*corresponding author e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT The potential for geotourism and mining heritage of some landscapes in parts of Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa and Kwara states in central Nigeria were studied and compiled. The result show that geological endowments range from insalbergs, flood basalts and dome structures, which presents natural landscape for tourism. The quartzite ridges of the Oreke area in Ilorin host the Owu Falls of 120m cascading waters, the Kafanchan flood basalts that flowed extensively from the Kagoro hills with extensive columnar jointing creating the prestigious water falls of over 30m all present versed potential for geotourism. Mining activity around the Jos Plateau (Bassa, Jos, Bukuru, Barakin Ladi and Bokkos areas), southern Kaduna (Godogodo and Jagindi) create landscapes that if properly beautified can become tourist landmarks. RAYMOND NORONHA Land Tenure in Sub-Saharan Africa* The evolution of land rights in Sub-Saharan Africa should not necessarily be viewed as a natural process, because some of the changes were the results of government intervention (either colonial or postcolonial). Such intervention is not always conducive to efficiency or equity-whereas market forces have tended to circumvent any restrictions that cause inefficiency. The issue is whether those market forces achieve the same efficiency that could have been obtained under a different institutional setup. The evidence cited in this paper dispels some of the popular misconceptions about land rights in Sub-Saharan Africa. In many areas there has always been individual possession; in others, it is growing. Even where communal ownership was imposed, cultivation and possession remained with individuai households, and an increasing range of rights to land were appropriated by individual households. Land sales and mortgaging by individuals are common in many areas where such transactions are not legally recognized. The lesson from other parts of the world is that efficiency requires individual land rights to be recognized in a way that provides sufficient security (either in the form of long-term leases or land titles). The stage may not have been reached yet in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. But in other parts (sometimes only a region within a country), the justification for a change in land arrangements already exists. In such cases, what is needed is a careful analysis of the benefits and costs of different systems (for example, title deeds, title registration and long-term leases), including equity considerations. -

The distribution patterns of platystomatid genera in the 12 recognized provinces of the Australasian Region are recorded. Notes are provided on biology and behaviour, including parasitism by fungi and strepsipterans, and mimicry of other insects and spiders. Means of separation from other acalyptrate families are provided. A key to Australasian genera is given. The subfamily Angitulinae is placed in synonymy of Platystomatinae. The subfamily classification is briefly discussed. The following new genera are described: Aetha, Bama, Eumeka, Hysma, Par, Phlyax, Signa, Tarfa, Terzia, Tomeus. Gonga and Polimen are new subgenera of Naupoda and Bama respectively. The genus Lasioxiria Hendel is a new synonym of Atopognathus Bigot. Chaetostichia Enderlein is a new synonym of Scholastes Loew. Eopiara Frey, described as a subgenus of Piara Loew, is raised to generic status. The genera Angituloides Hendel and Giraffomyia Sharp are reduced to subgenera of Angitula Walker. The following new species are described: Aetha cowanae, Bama (Polimen) shinonagai, Eumeka hendeli, Hysma lacteum, Paryphodes hospes, Signa mouldsi, Tarfa bowleyae, Terzia saigusai, Tomeus wyliei, Zealandortalis gregi. Stibick Introduction Introduction Fruit flies in the family Tephritidae are high profile insects among commercial fruit and vegetable growers, marketing exporters, government regulatory agencies, and the scientific community. Locally, producers face huge losses without some management scheme to control fruit fly populations. At the national and international level, plant protection agencies strictly regulate the movement of potentially infested products. Consumers throughout the world demand high quality, blemish-free produce. Partly to satisfy these demands, the costs to local, state and national governments are quite high and increasing as world trade, and thus risk, increases. Thus, fruit flies impose a considerable resource tax on participants at every level, from producer to shipper to the importing state and, ultimately, to the consumer. (McPheron & Steck, 1996) Indeed, in the United States alone, the running costs per year to APHIS, Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), (the federal Agency responsible) for maintenance of trapping systems, laboratories, and identification are in excess of US$27 million per year and increasing. This figure only accounts for a fraction of total costs throughout the country, as State, County and local governments put in their share as well as the local industry affected.
