Throughout the report, videoconferencing is taken as referring to “any activity which requires communication involving live video images being transmitted from one location to another”. In almost all applications, this also includes the transmission of audio and sometimes includes the transmission of data. The authors recognise that this definition of videoconferencing is a very broad one, including activities that elsewhere may not be referred to as videoconferencing; e.g. videotelephony, TV-type broadcasting and surveillance. They have been included here because, in higher education, there seems to be an acceptance that all these diverse activities have a similar base and are usually referred to under the same umbrella heading of videoconferencing. HOW TO USE THIS REPORT This document is divided into 3 main chapters and has 5 appendices, a glos sary and bibliography. Chapter 1 gives a general guide to using videoconferencing. It is intended to be of use to those thinking of using videoconferencing as well as those who are wanting to improve the facilities they already use. It will also be helpful for people who offer a service to others. Chapter 2 reviews the services (including networks and equipment) that are currently available and points to sources of further information. Chapter 3 reports the results of a survey carried out specifically for this docu ment and describes the ways in which videoconferencing is currently being used in higher education, ways in which it is being funded, possible future uses and advice that existing users give to those who may be just starting out. The Appendices form a very valuable reference resource and include: • a summary of videoconference standards; • a list of the main PC-based videoconferencing systems available with technical and other related information; • a list of videoconferencing configurations currently used in higher education (from the survey) describing the equipment used in each case; • a list of organisations (including higher education institutions) which have considerable experience and which are willing to be contacted; • a copy of the questionnaire used in the survey. The aim has been to cover as many potential problem situations as possible and the authors are aware that some areas have been covered in more detail than others as is not surprising in such a small project. The areas that have not been given so much 2 AGOCG Report HUSAT Resarch Institute attention are probably those of satellite transmission (as opposed to detailed descriptions of some of the network possibilities) and large scale broadcasting generally. The authors suggest that those with spe cific queries in this area contact Ray Winders at The University of Plymouth (See Appendix 4) who offers services and advice. 3 4 AGOCG Report HUSAT Resarch Institute Chapter 1 - Videoconferencing in Higher Education - How to get it right This guide is based on a short project investigating videoconferencing within one specific application area — higher education. It refers to both the other chapters in this report and also draws on the experience of the HUSAT Research Institute in undertaking both research and consultancy work in the area of videoconferencing (largely in the commercial sector). Structure Of This Chapter The guide is designed to be useful and relevant for anyone wanting to succeed with videoconferencing in higher education. In order to address individual needs as closely as possible, it is important to differentiate between those who actually use or want to use videoconferencing in order to facilitate their work and those who provide a videoconferencing service for others to use (of course it is possible to be both a user and a provider of the service). The intended readership of this report is those who would like to learn more about using videoconferencing in higher education. The reasons why you want to know more may be diverse and how you approach the subject will depend on where you are with it now. The chapter is therefore written in two main parts: The first provides information relating to videoconferencing that is divided into subject sections: • Uses of videoconferencing • Videoconferencing systems and methods of signal transmission (including networks) • The videoconferencing environment (physical and social) • Funding of videoconferencing • Management of videoconferencing services. The second part of the chapter attempts to provide guidance to individual readers which is dependent on where they are in the process now. This means that readers may want to go back to the chapter at a later date when their circumstances have changed. Each section of the second part of the chapter will refer the reader back to relevant sections of the first part. In addition, it will provide a perspective that is appropriate for individuals in each of the different situations described. 5 Chapter 1: Videoconferencing in Higher Education Part 1 SUBJECT SECTIONS Uses of videoconferencing According to the survey reported in Chapter 3, the general uses that higher education is currently making of videoconferencing are as follows: • Personal communication • Collaborative work • Presentations • Research (As a tool to aid research in other areas, e.g. astronomy

The image data used for the comparison were acquired during several pilot projects in a shipyard. The goal was the determination of 3-D co-ordinates of object points, which were signalised with retro- reflective targets, for dimensional checking and control in the ship building industry, as well as to test the suitability of the cameras for these applications. The image point measurements in the photos taken by the film-based camera were performed on an analytical plotter, while the digital image data were processed semi-automatically with digital photogrammetric methods. In addition, some of the analogue images were scanned and then also processed with digital photogrammetric methods. The results of simultaneous camera calibrations and 3-D point positioning are given, showing its accuracy potential, which turned out to be in the range of 1: 50,000 and 1: 75,000 for the DCS200 and up to 1: 27,000 for the Leica.

Over the years, a need was seen for a standard protocol that could allow participants in a chat, videoconference, interactive gaming, or other media to initiate user sessions with one another. In other words, a standard set of rules and services was needed that defined how computers would connect to one another so that they could share media and communicate.The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) was developed to set up, maintain, and tear down these sessions between computers. By working in conjunction with a variety of other protocols and special- ized servers, SIP provides a number of important functions that are necessary in allowing communications between participants. SIP provides methods of sharing the location and availability of users and explains the capabilities of the software or device being used. SIP then makes it possible to set up and manage the session between the parties. Without these tasks being performed, communication over a large network like the Internet would be impossible. It would be like a message in a bottle being thrown in the ocean; you would have no way of knowing how to reach someone directly or whether the person even could receive the message.

Virtually all software devel- opment requires collaboration among developers within and outside their project teams, to achieve a common objective. It has in fact been shown that about 70% of a software engineer’s time is spent on collaborative activities [219]. Indeed, col- laboration in software development has been studied by researchers in the fields of Software Engineering and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) since the 1980s and has produced a wide range of collaborative tools. Enabling software developers to collaborate effectively and effortlessly is a difficult task. The collaboration needs of the team depend to a large extent on environmental factors such as, the organizational structure of the team, the domain for which the software is produced, the product structure, and individual team members. Accordingly, research in collaborative development has produced a host of tools, each typically focussing on a different aspect of collaboration. Most teams have their favorite repertoire of tools that has been built from historical use. These tools may not always be the best suited for the team, but the team still uses them nevertheless as the inertia and cost of trying out new tools surpasses the benefits. A number of classification frameworks exist that can be used to classify collaborative tools. In addition to placing the various tools in context, developers can use these frameworks to select the right mix of tools fit for their needs.

Multi-user game-like environments make use of non-player characters and quest activities in tutoring and training. This approach incorporates successful active learning and incremental progress. This article presents issues encountered while adapting the multi-user online game genre for educational virtual environments. In this endeavour, non-player characters play a central role in organizing and delivering educational content. Educational virtual environments call for additional kinds of extension beyond generic user content creation as delivered in some virtual worlds like SecondLife. Support for these environments will emphasize the creation of new activities. A set of libraries and techniques named Portable Non-player character tutors and Quests reduces the effort needed to develop and integrate educational non-player characters. These non-player characters are introduced in CVE, a platform for rapidly developing educational virtual environments. A large number of mechanisms, policies, methods and schemes have been proposed for media coding, scheduling and distribution. Internet Protocol (IP) multicast was expected to be the primary transport mechanism for this, though it was never deployed to the expected extent. Recent developments in overlay networks has reactualized the research on multicast, with the consequence that many of the previous mechanisms and schemes are being re-evaluated. In order to achieve real-time HD resolution over typical Internet connection bandwidths, video compression is required. The amount of compression required to transmit 1080p video over a three megabits per second link is 332:1! Video compression techniques use mathematical algorithms to reduce the amount of data needed to transmit or store video. Lossless Compression Lossless compression changes how data is stored without resulting in any loss of information. Zip files are losslessly compressed so that when they are unzipped, the original files are recovered.

Although, it is the largest example of a conferencing or discussion group system,2 the tools generally available to access it only display leaves and branches - chains of messages and responses. None present the trees and forest. With hundreds of thousands of new messages every day, it is impossible to try to read them all to get a sense of the entire place. As a result, an overview of activity in the Usenet has been difficult to assemble and many basic questions about its size, shape, structure and dynamics have gone unanswered. How big is the Usenet? How many people post? Where are they from? When and where do they post? How do groups vary from one another and over time? How many different kinds of groups are there? How many groups successfully thrive and how many die? What do the survivors have that the others lack? How do different social cyberspaces connect and fit together and form a larger ecology? There is no shortage of questions. But we lack a historical record of the transformations of social cyberspaces3 just at the point when network interaction media are being widely adopted.

    The Leica Dicomar Lens on the UX Cameras The new AG-UX90 and AG-UX180 camcorders are large-sensor general-purpose professional camcorders, designed to deliver great footage regardless of the particular shooting scenario, whether the user is tasking it with shooting sports, or news, or live events, or concerts, or conventions, or speeches, or commercials, or corporate films, or weddings, or interviews, or any of the myriad other situations professional shooters find themselves in. An absolutely key component of being able to tackle so many different types of shooting environments, is the lens. While many shooters have come to rely on large-sensor cameras such as DSLRs, DSLMs, and digital cinema camcorders, the limitations of the lens for these large-sensor cameras has always introduced complications or limitations in shooting style as compared to the small- sensor all-in-one camcorder designs of professional handheld camcorders. With the UX90 and UX180, Panasonic has set out to deliver a single-lens system that provides the quality, performance, and flexibility to let the camera excel in all these environments. Creating such a lens that could cover the relatively huge 1” sensor and 4K resolution was a significant task; getting it to do so with Leica Dicomar-certified performance was a significant accomplishment. Getting it to do so while actually delivering more capability, a wider field of view, better image stabilization, better autofocus, and a longer zoom range, is truly impressive. In this paper I’d like to explore what they’ve accomplished, how they approached it, and what these innovations mean for the typical shooter.
