5 We believe that food plays an essential role in our community; it brings us together, shapes our memories, and empowers us. In 2011 we published a community cookbook titled Rubber Track Skid Steer & Tip Truck Hire Volcanic Kitchens, come and join us. The initial idea for the book was based on a concept of promoting and celebrating what Rotorua and the wider Driveway & Farm Race Maintenance Central Plateau has to offer. This was to be done through Landscape Contouring Gerhard’s photography and the contributed recipes. House Sites Cuts Service groups were given the opportunity to sell the book Driveway Dig Outs with profits made going back into the community. The Te Whakapono Health Trust used the money raised through Top Soil Spreading their sales towards a second haemodialysis machine for Maharo, the Rotorua Satellite Dialysis Unit. There was Suppliers & Cartage of Aggregate’s Metals a lovely connection with this in that one of the patients who attended Maharo regularly and Aunty Bea who & Recycled Crushed Concrete Products was the founding member of the Trust in 2004, had both Gap 20, 40, 65 contributed recipes. Another service club to benefit was a Drainage Metal 20/7, 40/20, 65/100 local Rotary Club; they sold copies to raise funds for their Breakfast in Schools program. Copies of Volcanic Kitchens sold out quite quickly and we For Friendly Advice Call Kevin are often contacted to see if we would be doing a reprint. on We have instead decided that the time is now right to publish a Volcanic Kitchens revisited. 0274927722 The concept remains the same, a book about Rotorua and the Central Plateau bursting with favourite family recipes or Email: and colourful images promoting our area. Once again, the [email protected] book will be made available to community groups and schools who will be able to sell the book to raise funds. We are asking people to contribute recipes. The only criteria are that it be a proven recipe. It would be great if you would include a brief foreword. Is this a family favourite? Where or from whom did you get the recipe from? What memories does this recipe evoke? A bit of NGONGOTAHA kiwi humour is always appreciated, we don’t it to be toooo serious! We wish to include recipes from all sectors of our society, the famous, the not so famous or your next door neighbour. Open We wish to have a representation of the different cultures who have chosen to live here, those who have grown up here, and those who have since left but still have fond 7 days memories and ties to our area. The original edition had contributions from Buck Shelford, Tim Beveridge, Aunty Bea, Ynys Fraser, Sarah Walker, Tessa Duder and many others. It takes quite a long time to publish a book; collate all the recipes and photographs, design and then have it printed. Mon - Sat Volcanic Kitchens revisited will be ready for sale in 7:00am – 7:30pm September/October next year, in time for Christmas 2020, however we need to start getting your recipes in now, so Sunday please email your contribution through. 7:30am – 7:30pm

THE MOUNTAIN NEWS 10TH MAY 1980 - BLAST FROM THE PAST

HERE AND THERE BY JWJ LEPPER The great hue and cry at the moment is about watering down of wine, could be carried on to a further stage to include many other practices that affect unsuspecting housewives when they buy normal household items. Where they really could be caught is in the field of liquid detergents, hand cleaners and most anything which is compatible with water. Sauces, jams are also of different strengths and are made up with fillers. How many times have you read the label that says a fruit essence is 'artificually coloured and flavoured?" After Shave lotions and other cosmetic liquids can also be suspect, and there doesn't seem to be any way in teling the real thing from a poor imitation. Be alert to these problems and when that dishwasher you've been using for years doesn't seem to be doing its job, try another brand, or better still, buy the base materials and add water to your own specifications. Ranginui Street Reserve After receiving a letter from residents in Ranginui Street, the Council have cleared that drainage reserve so that people can improve the access to the Lake themselves. It's nice to see people who are willing to help themselves and make the offer in writing rather than sending in the usual "what can you do for us" sort of letter so often received by Council. Sewerage Contractors have started on this major job and while the digging is going on, Parents are asked to keep their children away from the works, as they could come to some harm if they are not careful. Waiteti Damage Apparently the other night some youngster who was upset with something at home, simply walked out of the house and smashed a Motel sign and then damaged the front window of a house. Somebody should make sure that the message is given to the culprit, that this type of behaviour is not wanted in our Community. More Centennial Celebrations Ngongotaha Style Don't forget the great cake and vegetable competition coming up soon. There will be competitions with 1st, 2nd and 3rd cards presented to the participants for the best entries of sponges, scones, pikelets etc. I am not sure of the classes but details can be obtained from Andy Burnett. All articles will be on tables outside the Mecca in Ngongotaha by 3.30pm Thursday 22nd May. Judging will take place and cards presented, then at 5.30pm all entries will be auctioned for Charity. We are hoping that local Womens organisations will participate but any person can compete. There may even be a prize for the best entry by a male. The vegetable competition consists of vegetables such as peas, silver beet, beans etc. All produce will be distributed bythe Lions and Kiwanis at the end of the celebrations. 7 Want to trade latte’s for gumboots? Our next featured Rotorua Trainer is Iain Kennedy who was born in Zimbabwe and moved to the UK in his late teens to further his interest in working with horses. He played Polo and groomed for Prince Charles, and then after completing his Osteo Studies moved to NZ. He was very keen to get involved in horse racing and the first horse he had shares in was named Cotillion with local identities Brownie (Brownies Spit) and Richard Anaru. Cotillion was destined to become something special until a training accident ended her career before it had hardly begun. In 2011 his wife Linda suggested that if he wanted to continue his involvement in the racing industry he would need to get his trainers license, and ride them himself as there was no way they could afford it otherwise, so almost 9 years on and 19 wins under his belt, all their spare time is spent with horses which they say are very easy to collect. Dontdyewonderin who they raced with Brownie was their first success story with 3 wins and numerous placings, she is now in the broodmare paddock with the first 2 foals on the maiden racing circuit now. Endean Rose who they raced with owners Andrew Burton and Linda Hunt proved to be a wee super star, she had 6 wins as well as placing 3rd in the Group 1 Livamol and 2nd in the Group 2 Travis Stakes. She was sold to Australian interests and had a filly last year to "Russian Revolution" and is now in foal to "IAm Invincible"- Winx's new man. Iain is currently racing Lady Shabeel who already has 6 wins under her belt and was 3rd in the Listed Matamata Cup. Others to watch out for are Endean Lass, Prestigious Lad and Master Oakleigh, he also has several younger horses in training, so plenty to keep them both busy. On the results front for Rotorua trainers this time, the Pomare team has been flying! "Call Me Evie" won the Maiden 1200 at Tauranga , then quickly followed with a 2nd in the 1400 at Ellerslie, a 2nd in Tauranga and a 3rd recently at Te Teko. Donna Anne Billy almost got there when she was 2nd in the Group 3 sprint, and then recently followed it up with a 2nd= in Tauranga in the Open HCP 1400. Ocean Billy also went really well, held up a bit and came home for 4th in the Rating 72- 2400 proving he can definitely go over distance, and then proved he knew exactly what it is all about when he won the R72 2100 at Tauranga. These horses are all showing some real ability and promise for the future. Michael Murray's "Outtalign I Am" won the maiden 4yo & Up 12.15 at Rotorua Iain Kennedy's "Endean Lass" ran a very nice 3rd in the Matamata Mdn 1400, 2nd in the Matamata maiden 1600 Donna Fleming's "Koolascuz" ran a nice 4th at Matamata then won the maiden 2000 at Matamata then 4th in the Matamata 65 - 2000

If you are a keen racing supporter you can join our Facebook group, simply called "Rotorua Racing" where you can follow more closely the news about Rotorua trainers and their racing schedules.

Well That’s enough, enjoy the young ones being back at school, haven’t met the new WHHS principle yet. Be safe especially near water and while driving as I've experienced some weird driving manoeuvres by middle aged people who don’t usually drive on our side of the road or have been in NZ less than an Hour.

After a particularly poor round, a golfer spotted a lake as he walked despondently up the 18th. He looked at his caddie and said, “I’ve played so badly all day, I think I’m going to drown myself in that lake.” The caddie, quick as a flash, replied, “I’m not sure you could keep your head down that long.”

What is the difference between a golfer and a fisherman? When a golfer lies, he doesn’t have to bring anything home to prove it.

A hacker was playing so badly that his caddie was getting increasingly exasperated. On the 11th, his ball lay about 160 yards from the green and as he eyed up the shot, he asked his caddie, “Do you think I can get there with a 4-iron?”

“Eventually,” replied the caddie, wearily.

15 Rotorua needs to move forward.

As many will know, 2020 is an election year and that means that there will be some big decisions to make.

For the Government, 2019 was meant Servicing the Rotorua Area to be the year of delivery but in this they have failed. We Specialise

In Products made in Instead they delivered policies New Zealand for that slowed down our economic New Zealand Conditions progress. The economy has slowed Quality Products/Great Service/Value for money dramatically from an around 4% Finance Available under National to now just over 2%. That has a real impact. A declining economy means businesses are fighting harder to create jobs. 91 Old Taupo Road, Rotorua 07 348 0615 [email protected] Under National 10,000 jobs a month were created that's now fallen tenfold. This means fewer people are getting the opportunity to get their foot in the door, earn an income and gain new skills. It has also meant that TODD MCCLAY we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people seeking welfare, MP FOR ROTORUA up 27,000 in two years.

New taxes like the four new petrol Stop by the office for a chat taxes and incompetence demonstrated in the Government's housing plan, has A 1301 Amohau Street raised the cost of living and is making it harder for people to get ahead. P 07 348 5871

F 07 349 6732 It has not taken long for the W toddmcclay.co.nz government’s policies to undo all the hard work New Zealanders put in E [email protected] over the last nine years.

Funded by the Parliamentary Service and authorised by Todd McClay, 1301 Amohau Street, Rotorua Government's need to be able to deliver better outcomes to the people they serve. National takes this seriously and our record speaks to that. We were the party that delivered $24 million for the Tarawera roundabout and committed to four lanes on Te Ngae Road. We were the party that upgraded Lake Road and 4 laning Road. We were the party that was progressing housing developments and funded 117 new social houses. We delivered UFB internet to Rotorua.

But under Labour, Rotorua has stalled, they’ve prioritised flashy announcements over actual delivery. You can't get into town faster on an announcement.

We need policies that help New Zealanders get ahead and have a fair go and that’s what National is committed to.

This year National is committed to delivering an economic plan that helps New Zealander's get ahead. A plan that lets you keep more of what you earn, that seeks to actually build the roads we need and a focus on keeping your family safe.

I hope that 2020 is a year of opportunity for Rotorua and New Zealand and I will be working hard to make sure that Rotorua gets a fair go.

Hon. Todd McClay MP Member of Parliament for Rotorua Spokesman for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Work Place Relations, Health and Safety.

PHONE: 357 2060 One of the biggest projects this year will be the setting up of a Whole of Life Hub for the Elderly which will see the possible move of Age Concern and Grey Power to a house near Parksyde. Negotiations are underway at present and the eventual facility will be a one stop shop for the elderly where they can find out things about mental health, suicide, loneliness, housing, nutrition, transport, EPOA, wills, finance, disabilities, dementia, stroke and a multitude of other things relevant to the growing population of elderly. Our major fundraisers this year will be to raise funds for a 12-seater minivan with a wheelchair hoist which we can use for a variety of activities. We will be able to use it to take larger social groups shopping, use it for social connection outings to a variety of places, use it to transport seniors to seminars we hold, use it as a last resort to transport people to appointments when other transport fails and use it to transport goods to displays and expos etc. Because we had such a good year in 2019 we are considering adding to our staff this year by creating a new position of Social Connection Coordinator which will involve several initiatives around community liaison, programme and project coordination, Expo, International Day of Older Persons, Home and Lifestyle Show, Intrepid Journeys, Intergenerational Project, Xmas Celebrations, website overview, Facebook, Social media. As our core business is around connecting with our seniors this is a very important position and like all our activities is dependent on funding. Towards the end of last year, we received some funding from St Joan’s Trust to provide our own Elder Abuse Service which now is contracted to Family Focus. What that means for us is that if we have incidence of Elder Abuse with individuals or families we can deal with it ourselves rather than pass it on. There will obviously be some training required and this will happen towards the end of February. Elder Abuse is an often unseen, under reported epidemic that will only increase as we find more people entering the over 65 bracket.

27 18 A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor’s office. “Is it true,” she wanted to know, “that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?” “Yes, I’m afraid so,” the doctor told her. There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, “I’m wondering, then, just how serious is my condition, because this prescription is marked ‘NO REFILLS’.” He was a widower and she a widow. They had known each other for a number of years being high school classmates and having attended class reunions in the past without fail. This 60th anniversary of their class, the widower and the widow made a foursome with two other singles. They had a wonderful evening, their spirits high. The widower throwing admiring glances across the table. The widow smiling coyly back at him. Finally, he picked up the courage to ask her, “Will you marry me?” After about six seconds of careful consideration, she answered, “Yes,….. yes I will!” The evening ended on a happy note for the widower. But the next morning he was troubled. Did she say “Yes” or did she say “No?” He couldn’t remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. He went over the conversation of the previous evening, but his mind was blank. He remembered asking the question but for the life of him could not recall her response. With fear and trepidation he picked up the phone and called her. First, he explained that he couldn’t remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the past evening. As he gained a little more courage he then inquired of her. “When I asked if you would marry me, did you say “Yes” or did you say “No?” “Why you silly man, I said ‘Yes. Yes I will.’ And I meant it with all my heart.” The widower was delighted. He felt his heart skip a beat. Then she continued. “And I am so glad you called because I couldn’t remember who asked me!” Two paddies were working for the city public works department. One would dig a hole, and the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working all day furiously without rest, one man digging a hole, the other filling it in again. An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn’t understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, “I’m impressed by the effort you two are putting into your work, but I don’t get it – why do you dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?” The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, “Well, I suppose it probably looks odd because we’re normally a three-person team. But today the lad who plants the trees called in sick.'” A Texan walks into a pub in Ireland and clears his voice to the crowd of drinkers. He says, “I hear you Irish are a bunch of hard drinkers. I’ll give $500 American dollars to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back-to-back.” The room is quiet, and no one takes up the Texan’s offer. One man even leaves. Thirty minutes later the same gentleman who left shows back up and taps the Texan on the shoulder. “Is your bet still good?” asks the Irishman. The Texan says yes and asks the bartender to line up 10 pints of Guinness. Immediately the Irishman tears into all 10 of the pint glasses drinking them all back-to-back. The other pub patrons cheer as the Texan sits in amazement. The Texan gives the Irishman the $500 and says, “If ya don’t mind me askin’, where did you go for that 30 minutes you were gone?” The Irishman replies, “Oh…I had to go to the pub down the street to see if I could do it first”

This year I’m looking forward to seeing the progress of PGF investments made here in my hometown. Projects that have received investment included the revitalisation of the lakefront, investment in forestry and research, Te Uru Rakau (forestry service) and the re-opening of Rotorua Museum. There has been great support for Rotorua which has benefitted more from this Government than it has in two generations.

Fresh Is Best Pickling is best done with super-fresh vegetables. Save the slightly bruised specimens for soups or other forms of preservation. Almost any vegetable can be pickled, and the shape you choose to pickle in is entirely up to you. For example, carrots can be peeled and sliced into matchsticks or coins. Cherry tomatoes are best preserved whole. Green vegetables, such as green beans or asparagus, can be blanched in boiling water for two to three minutes and then shocked in an ice bath to preserve their color, but this step is purely optional. Achieve Better Texture: 5 Ways to Give Your Pickles Better Texture Preparing Vegetables for Pickling Thinly slice: cucumbers, summer squash, ginger, red onion Cut into spears: carrots, cucumbers Peel: carrots Blanch: green beans (optional, but helps preserve their color) Brine Basics For quick pickles, a basic brine is equal parts vinegar and water, but you can adjust the ratio to your preference. Any basic vinegar is game — white vinegar, apple cider, white wine, and rice vinegar all work well. You can use these vinegars alone or in combination. Steer clear of aged or concentrated vinegars like balsamic or malt vinegar for pickling. 21 We provide quality early childhood education where children can play, learn and grow in a happy FREE fees!! environment. for all tamariki  Bicultural approach 2 years to  Strong philosophy  Qualified teaching team school age*  Play and learn in our large natural environment that inspires learning through play Nau mai haere mai,  Enviroschools accredited call in and see us  WINZ subsidies available today We would love to show you our kindergarten and discuss the needs of your child, so call in and visit * Conditions apply today!

22 2020 a year of the future Wow it is 2020 already. Happy New Year! Did any of you see or read about the light/reflections from the Satellites that lit up the sky last Saturday night? It is rare for us to see 2 or  Spray Painting  Plastic 3 of them in one night let  Truck Painting Welding alone 10 or so in a row.  Panel Beating  Insurance The future is here and all I  Restoration Work could think about was who gave them permission to change our districts night sky so radically. It was sort of cool, but then it wasn’t. So here we are in 2020, the year that previous predictions outlined we would no longer reading hard copy books (or newsletters), all living to over 100 and driving self-drive vehicles through the air. None of these predictions have come true but a few others have, such as our activities being tracked by technology (or satellites overhead) and computers in our homes and vehicles having a lot of influence in our everyday lives. For example, my Ford Ranger does aspects of driving better than I can. The lights come on automatically and go from full to dip for oncoming traffic faster than I ever could do. The same goes for the wipers which automatically come on at the right speed when rain is detected. All I will say about autocruise is that most of the huge 20 wheel plus trucks you see on the road between Rotorua and Auckland are all driving on autocruise with the driver only occasionally taking control at stop signs. No foot on the brakes, accelerator or clutch and no changing through those 10 plus gears either, all the driver does is steer the vehicle. Hmmm. So what would your 2020 predictions of our Ngongotaha, Awahou, Kaharoa and Hamurana rohe (district) have been 20 or BERT WILLIAMSON thirty years ago? Perhaps you thought there would be thousands more people fishing in our lake and rivers and playing golf on the Hamurana Golf course? Lots of 5 star hotels lining the shores of the Lake and rivers or overlooking the areas from the Local Owner Operator - 5 Ton Skid Steer Mangorewa Kaharoa ranges? A nuclear Power station providing free electricity. with range of attachments I think it would be fair to say that as far as radical change goes, our rohe has enjoyed very little change in the last twenty years or so. Our marae may have flasher buildings and more Rate: $100 per hr technology but they have the same tikanga and te reo that has always been there. Nationwide there are less fishing licences being sold and fewer people playing golf so no real changes Services there either. Having said that, the Hamurana Golf club is under new management so we can expect improvements there. No Reshaping farm new 5 Star hotels have been built in the last twenty years and as tracks, yards & lanes far as I know there are no nuclear power stations in Aotearoa let alone free power. Forming water tables Sure there are more people living in our rohe with more land Calf sheds being made available every month for others to come and work, stay and play, but on the whole the status quo has been Driveways and tanker maintained in our rohe over the last twenty years or so and I loops think that is a good thing. And more Change can be a good thing most times. However little change can be a very good thing as well, especially if you live here in our rohe in 2020. So enjoy the lifestyle that previous generations Contact Bert enjoyed, established and protected. Now how do we get them to stop those satellites reflecting so much light and distracting us 027 489 0453 from our night time trout fishing.
