2017 Hall of Fame Inductee

Ronald Mitchell

onald Mitchell is a tennis advocate who be- R lieves in giving back to his community. While his first introduction to tennis was in a mandatory physical education class at Central Michigan University, Ronald fell in love with the game in the following years. Ronald and his daughter, Wendy, would often play together at local parks including Rainbow Beach, Jesse Owens, and Tuley Park. Participating in both local and national tournaments, Ronald became a supporter off the court just as much as his play on court. In the early 1980s, Ronald was asked to serve on a committee for the Chicago Prairie Tennis Club. He took this to heart and served in as many ways possible. He has dutifully served as the President, Vice President, and is currently the Chairperson of the Junior Development Program. Not only is his time spent with Chicago Prairie Tennis Club, but Ron also has served on Midwest committees and other local tennis organization boards. As a coach, Ronald has developed and mentored numerous junior play- ers over the years. Donating his time, and often spending his own money, Ronald has supported the efforts of many young Chicago jun- iors in their tennis journeys. Three students of his all graduated high school with honors while also high rankings in the city. One played col- lege tennis on a scholarship, completed her undergraduate degree, con- tinued on to medical school, and is now a doctor. Another received a full tennis scholarship at a prestigious four-year college and is now working on a degree in pharmacy. The third junior is in her final year at Northwestern on an academic scholarship. As a player, Ronald has continued to participate in tournaments around the district. He has held rankings in both singles and doubles for over three decades. As an avid player for the Chicago Park District League, Ronald has also been the captain of a team who were champions for consecutive years. Besides numerous plaques and trophies, Ronald has been awarded a scholarship in his name with Martial Bufford from the Tennis Opportunity Program (TOP) and recently received Volunteer of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards from the Chicago Tennis Patrons. 22 15 2016 Organization of the Year

CrossCourt News Award Love To Serve Tennis & Education Foundation

The CrossCourt News Award is presented to an aggressive, well organize community based local tennis organization in the District. It honors a group who has supported and promoted the overall growth of the game, especially at a grass roots level. The award is sponsored by the CrossCourt News.

For 25 years, Love To Serve has been committed to providing tennis pro- grams for urban youth ages 5 to 18; college readiness programs for high school students as well as tennis coaching jobs for youth beginning at 14 years old. Love To Serve has developed important partnerships that have made this possible. One partner, After School Matters, is a Chicago not-for-profit that supports providing teens with opportunities to receive a stipend to participate in activities after school that they would be interested in. The teens for this program have been funded by After School Matters since 2000. This model has allowed Love To Serve the leverage to teach teens how to play the game of tennis and also how to teach the game to youth 10 and under. Over 500 youth have been employed through this summer youth initiative. Additionally, the Chicago Park District has benefitted from Love To Serve’s program because they provide skilled and trained Recreational Tennis Leaders for their summer camps throughout Chicago. Love To Serve trained teens are assigned to park sites throughout the city that have tennis courts to teach the game of tennis. Also, students that are presently attending college return to be Activity Instructors at the sites where teens are placed as Recreational Tennis Leaders. Love To Serve’s newest collaboration with the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Com- munity Center has allowed them the opportunity to establish year-round programming at their new state of the art facility that has 4 outdoor tennis courts and 2 indoor multi-purpose tennis courts. As a pillar in the Chicago community for consistent quality tennis pro- gramming leading to college scholarships and year-round and summer employment for teens and college students, Love To Serve continues to make a difference in the lives of many.
