On behalf of our Association, welcome members, industry friends and colleagues to the 33rd Annual NTCA Industry Conference at the Darwin Convention Centre, proudly hosted by the NTCA Top End Branch. The conference is targeted at high level and ‘over the horizon’ themes designed to expose delegates to emerging opportunities and challenges, stimulating thought and discussion. The theme of the conference is “Positioning for Prosperity”, with a deliberate focus on what lies ahead for the northern Australian cattle industry. The event has attracted a record-breaking 550 delegates who will hear from expert speakers on topics such as foreign investment; the advantage of building relationships with our Asian neighbours; how market competitors such as Brazil may impact the beef producers of Australia and the NT; technology and how to prepare for the digital consumers of the future; as well as updates on markets in Indonesia and Vietnam. The conference program will deliver world class experts who will address critical issues relevant to today’s industry, and the industry of the future, with topics relevant to pastoral businesses and associated agribusiness as we advance toward increasing levels of innovation, demand and growth. Research psychologist, Jarrod Payne, will reveal how supply chains are changing as digital technology transforms the way people interact with food. MARKETS, TRANSITIONING, PREPARATION 1:30PM ANDREW SIMPSON, Meat & Livestock Australia Indonesia & Vietnam - Risks, Opportunities and Tactics: Mr Simpson will focus on political and practical constraints and opportunities for Australian red meat in the South East Asian region with a focus on Australia’s key trading partners Indonesia and Vietnam. 2:00PM DR ROSS AINSWORTH South East Asian Markets: As Australia’s competitive advantage continues to be challenged in our global markets, Dr Ainsworth, back by popular demand, will deliver his expert and first-hand knowledge of the market and consumer trends of one of the most important economic regions of the world (and an important customer of the Northern Territory). 2:30PM DAVID HARLAND, FINH Transitioning to the next generation: Handing on the family business to the next generation is a time-honoured tradition, but in modern day agriculture, often presents the single biggest challenge to families and businesses. Matthew Canavan Federal Minister for Resources & Northern Australia Twitter: @mattjcan At the 2013 election, Matthew was elected to the Senate and took up his position as a Senator in the Nationals party room in July 2014. He is the first Senator to be based in Rockhampton for more than 20 years. Matthew was appointed Minister for Resources and Northern Australia following the 2016 election, becoming the first Cabinet Minister to be based in Central Queensland since the 1970’s. Prior to his election to the Senate, Matthew worked for Stanbroke, the largest privately owned vertically integrated beef business in the world, providing him with an invaluable insight into agricultural affairs. Senator Canavan will deliver the opening address at the NTCA 33rd Annual Industry Conference The Hon. Andrew Robb, AO Former Australian Minister for Trade and Investment Twitter: @AndrewRobbAO Mr Andrew Robb was appointed to the Federal Cabinet as Minister for Trade and Investment in 2013. In this role Mr Robb negotiated free trade agreements with South Korea, Japan and China, as well as the 12 country Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Free Trade Agreement and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Singapore. Additionally he conducted 85 investment roundtables with 28 countries. Mr Robb will illustrate the challenges and opportunities of building beef supply chains into Asia, with a particular focus on China and the significance of building relationships. He will also articulate the importance of foreign capital investment in the Northern Beef Industry. 3 Hon. Ken Vowles NT Minister for Primary Industry & Resources Twitter: @kenvowles Ken is a born and bred Territorian, who has been a part of the local community he represents in the NT Parliament since the 1970’s. He now serves in the newly elected NT Labor Government as the Minister for Primary Industry and Resources. Minister Vowels will focus on the need to be vigilant about keeping our competitive advantage through maintaining our reputation as a supplier of safe and reliable quality produce; and our collective role in continuing Australia’s ability to innovate, particularly as we focus on North Australian Development Adolfo Fontes Rabobank Twitter: @RabobankAU Mr Fontes is a Senior Research Analyst specialising in the animal protein sector. Before joining Rabobank, he worked for five years as the market intelligence coordinator for a leading international company in the animal nutrition business. Before this, Adolofo worked in a research institute and in consultancy. Mr Fontes will explore the implications for global trade as result of the shift in the geopolitical landscape across the world. He will also provide insight into the dynamics of protein demand from a global perspective, with a focus on red meat. Dr Phil Holmes Phil Holmes & Co Dr Holmes is the principal of Holmes & Company, a NSW based firm providing business advice to corporate and family owned farm businesses throughout Australia. Dr Holmes’ special interests are commercial beef and sheep production, agricultural sustainability, finance, and sensible wealth creation through investing. Dr Holmes is a hard line disciple of the ‘evidence-based’ school of thinking and strives for that approach to dominate debate on Australian agricultural issues. Dr Holmes will analyse Australia’s current cattle market
