    Neuroscience Major: Sequence in Cognitive Neuroscience If you are a student who is interested in the human brain, and how it links to the human mind and complex human behaviors-- from before birth through adulthood, then this is the Neuroscience track for you! Note: This track is approved as a multidisciplinary major for ISS scholars at CMC. I. Overview The CogNeuro sequence in the Neuroscience major equips students with the knowledge of how to relate information processing in the human brain to human mental processes and behavior. Mental processes include perception, attention, voluntary movement, memory, conceptual biases, language, imagery, emotions, problem solving, decision-making, and social judgment. There are 2 main tracks within the CogNeuro track: 1) one for students who plan to attend graduate school for cognitive, social, or cultural neuroscience, or who want to obtain a job in a research lab at graduation; and 2) one for all other students (e.g. those who plan to attend medical or nursing or veterinary or dentistry school or graduate school for clinical psychology or law school or business school As for all of the sequences you should be choosing your 4 courses with the advice of the faculty who will be your Neuroscience major advisor, who will most likely be your senior thesis first reader and primary mentor.     PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT BIOPSYCHOLOGY SPECIALIZATION OVERVIEW In the Biopsychology Specialization, students will explore how biological mechanisms relate to a wide range of topics: sensation, cognition, sleep, motivation, emotion, addiction, and clinical disorders. This specialization will expose students to the interface between biology and psychology (e.g., neuroscience, health psychology, psychopharmacology, psychoneuroimmunology, and genetics) and will prepare students for careers in these fields as well as in clinical psychology, medicine, or pharmaceuticals.     Memory systems of the brain Alvaro Pastor Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Computer Science, Multimedia and Telecommunications Department, Barcelona, Spain [email protected] January 1, 2020 Abstract Humans have long been fascinated by how memories are formed, how they can be damaged or lost, or still seem vibrant after many years. Thus the search for the locus and organization of memory has had a long history, in which the notion that is is composed of distinct systems developed during the second half of the 20th century. A fundamental dichotomy between conscious and unconscious memory processes was first drawn based on evidences from the study of amnesiac subjects and the systematic experimental work with animals. The use of behavioral and neural measures together with imaging techniques have progressively led researchers to agree in the existence of a variety of neural architectures that support multiple memory systems. This article presents a historical lens with which to contextualize these idea on memory systems, and provides a current account for the multiple memory systems model. Introduction Memory is a quintessential human ability by means of which the nervous system can encode, store, and retrieve a variety of information [1, 2]. It affords the foundation for the adaptive nature of the organism, allowing to use previous experience and make predictions in order to solve the multitude of environmental situations produced by daily interaction. Not only memory allows to recognize familiarity and return to places, but also richly imagine potential future circumstances and assess the consequences of behavior. Therefore, present experience is inexorably interwoven with memories, and the meaning of people, things, and events in the present depends largely on previous experience.

This article aims to provide a starting point for interdisciplinary exchange by reviewing three philosophical debates about the nature of the self in light of contemporary work in cognitive neuroscience. Continental rationalist and British empiricist approaches to the unity of the self are discussed in relation to earlier work on split-brain patients, and to more recent work on “mental time travel” and the default mode network; the phenomenological movement, and the central concept of intentionality, are discussed in relation to interoceptive accounts of emotion and to the mirror neuron system; and ongoing philosophical debates about agency and autonomy are discussed in relation to recent work on action awareness and on insight in clinical populations such as addicts and patients with frontotemporal dementia. Study 1: Semantic knowledge. Participants were scanned while they answered questions about their knowledge of both social categories and non-social categories like object groups and species of nonhuman animals. Brain regions previously identified in processing semantic information are more robustly engaged by nonsocial semantics than stereotypes. In contrast, stereotypes elicit greater activity in brain regions implicated in social cognition. These results suggest that stereotypes should be considered distinct from other forms of semantic knowledge.
