Laney School of Graduate Studies of Emory University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts 2011 Abstract “Expressions of the Life that is within Us” Epistolary Practice of American Women in Republican China By Haipeng Zhou Reciprocal exchanges, interactions that influence a person’s life and development, are the focus of my dissertation on a group of progressive American women. Among them are Ida Pruitt, Helen Snow, and Maud Russell, who stayed in China in the 1920s and 1930s, engaging in various progressive activities as social worker, YWCA secretary and independent journalist respectively. Letter writing and reading was an indispensable part of their life in China. It served as a vital link between their diverse Chinese experience and American homeland, it set up a free stage for these letter writers to create and perform various selves, it served as a key factor to define the letter writers’ sense of community, and it provided a unique lens to see a transnational history with emphasis on gender and race. The purpose of this project is to unravel the significance of the discursive epistolary practice of these women. It examines through epistolary representations the internal and external standards in evaluating women’s new and traditional roles in this historical period. More specifically, my dissertation will focus on four key themes: progressive American women’s community in China, their self-representation of changing personas and selves in reaction to various external values, the influence of their letter writing on the perception of China in the US, and the impact of their epistolary practice on international feminist practices and cross-cultural understanding. To explore these themes, I investigate the foreign community in China and its epistolary culture in general, as well as conduct specific case studies. I argue that the letters of the progressive women reveal unique transnational as well as local social networks established through their professional, domestic and social activities. The epistolary legacies left by these middle-class American women open new windows to see the past from an enlightening perspective. They demonstrate that individuals’ experience can break through ideological barriers and influence imbalance among big territorial powers. My dissertation committee – co-advisors Kate Nickerson and Kimberly Wallace- Sanders, and committee member Rong Cai – have all given me vital support throughout the years of my graduate study in their distinct ways. Without their advice and encouragement the completion of this project would not have been possible. Early in my graduate years when I discussed with Dr. Nickerson my research interest in intercultural encounters seen through American women’s experience in China, she brought into my attention the collections at the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women. I did my first archival trip afterward and found the trove of letters. In a sense, this project started to really grow after that enlightening discussion with Dr. Nickerson. I cannot remember how many “writer’s block” moments I had in this project since I had so many. But I do remember each of the crunch times when Dr. Wallace-Sanders dragged me out of my dark hole of writer’s block and self-abasement, showed me new light and sent me to the right direction in writing. Dr. Rong Cai’s expertise in Chinese studies was also essential for my project. I could always rely on her wise advice to build a comparative perspective between the American women characters and Chinese women of the same period. I am really grateful and fortunate to have these remarkable and caring professors on my committee, and thank them from the bottom of my heart for their time, mentorship and trust. I would also like to thank other professors who have taught me much about good scholarship. In particular, Dr. Mary Brown Bullock, Dr. Kevin Corrigan, Dr. Michael Elliot, Dr. Regine Jackson and Dr. Betty Parker-Smith, all of them gave me much needed support and encouragement at different stages of my project. I am grateful to Emory University’s Laney Graduate School and my home department Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts for generous financial and institutional support that made my graduate study and research trips possible. Xu Associate Professor Rania Huntington, University of Wisconsin at Madison Abstract From a comparative standpoint, the American Protestant missionary enterprise in China was built on a paradox in cross-cultural encounters. In order to convert the Chinese—whose religion they rejected—American missionaries adopted strategies of assimilation (e.g. learning Chinese and associating with the Chinese) to facilitate their work. My dissertation explores how American Protestant missionaries negotiated the rejection-assimilation paradox involved in their missionary work and forged a cultural identification with China in their English novels set in China between the late Qing and 1930. I argue that the missionaries’ novelistic expression of that identification was influenced by many factors: their targeted audience, their motives, their work, and their perceptions of the missionary enterprise, cultural difference, and their own missionary identity. Hence, missionary novels may not necessarily be about conversion, the missionaries’ primary objective but one that suggests their resistance to Chinese culture, or at least its religion. Instead, the missionary novels I study culminate in a non-conversion theme that problematizes the possibility of cultural assimilation and identification over ineradicable racial and cultural differences.

    Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

    University of Pennsylvania Department of History History 412 The Republic of China, 1911-1949 and After Professor Arthur Waldron Spring 2014 Summary: This seminar treats the history, politics, and culture of the Republic of China, which ruled China from 1911/12 until its overthrow by the Communists in the Civil War (1945-49) who established a new state, the People’s Republic of China (1949-). This was a time of political contention, considerable progress in education, the economy, and other areas: also of comparative openness compared to what followed. After 1931, however, all was dominated by the menace of Japan, which exploded into full scale warfare in 1937-1945. The course consists of readings, seminar discussions, and a research paper. We meet from 3:00-6:00 on Thursdays in Meyerson Hall B-6. Introduction: The last of the traditional dynasties that had ruled China for millennia, the Qing, was overthrown by a series of uprisings that began in October of 1911, It abdicated on February 24, 1912, and was succeeded by the Republic of China, which ruled China until 1949. Its history is fascinating and full of questions. How does a society that has had an emperor for thousands of years set up a new form of government? How do people, who have long operated in accord with well defined “traditions” in everything from the arts to family organization, become “modern”? In fact, for a long time, many believed that was impossible without a revolution like that which created the Soviet Union in 1917. What sorts of literature, arts, fashion, etiquette, and so forth could be both “Chinese” and “modern”? (Again, many have thought this impossible).

In order to ensure competitive advantage, they must be able to promote high levels of professional performance. This research is part of this theme and aims to analyze how the job characteristics, professional knowledge, skills, competencies, training and work engagement influence the job evaluation and, consequently, the performance of employees of six public hospitals, China. The sample consists of 546 subjects aged between 21 and 58 years (M = 37.9; SD = 8.73), with the majority being females (55.5%). For the collection of data, such scales were used as the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS), the Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Personal Characteristics Scale (KSAOS), the Competencies and Training Scale (CTS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The results obtained show that the job characteristics, the professional knowledge, the skills, the training and the work engagement influence the job evaluation. It was also found that the male respondents, those belonging to the older age group, those with higher academic qualifications and those with higher positions present higher average performance in all dimensions under study.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Chinese women reacted in a variety of ways to the social and political changes of the era. Some women were actively engaged in politics while others were not. Some women became revolutionaries and fought for reform in China, other women were more willing to work with and within the established cultural framework. Discussion of reforms and reformers in the late nineteenth-early twentieth centuries are primarily focused on men and male activism; however, some women felt very strongly about reform and were willing to die in order to help China modernize. This thesis explores the life experiences and activism of five women who lived at the end of China’s imperial period and saw the birth of the Republican period. By analyzing and comparing the experiences of Zheng Yuxiu, Yang Buwei, Xie Bingying, Wang Su Chun, and Ning Lao Taitai, this thesis helps to unlock the complex and often hidden lives of Chinese women in modern Chinese history. This period was characterised by political chaos, internal division and internecine warfare between various cliques of military strongmen who controlled China’s numerous provinces. These de facto military dictators of China, known as warlords in historical literature, were customarily construed to be avaricious and self-serving despots who ruled their large territories with little regard for the welfare of their subjects or that of the Chinese nation. My thesis aims to revise these previously held assumptions concerning the historical agency of Chinese warlords by investigating the unusual conduct of a particularly influential warlord: Wu Peifu. Wu’s display of deeply seated nationalistic tendencies throughout his political career, I argue, complicates our understanding of the impact that Chinese warlords exerted on the rise of Chinese national

Through the lens of postmodern theory, the thesis explores the concept and essence of liberal arts education as reflected in the curriculum of the Christian universities through a qualitative methodology, focusing on the analysis of historical archival material.
