Vol. 4, No. 1, 2019, pp. 1-12. doi: 10.11648/j.ijecs.20190401.11 Received : October 15, 2018; Accepted : November 8, 2018; Published : January 31, 2019 Abstract: Currently, Pashto and Dari (Afghan Persian), the two official languages, and other Afghan languages are written in modified Arabic alphabets. Persian adopted the Arabic alphabets in the ninth century, and Pashto, in sixteenth century CE. This article looks at how the Arabic Orthography has hindered Literacy and Economic development in Afghanistan. The article covers a comprehensive analysis of Arabic Orthography adopted for writing Dari and Pashto, a study of the proposed Arabic Language reforms, and research conducted about reading and writing difficulty in Arabic script by Arab intellectuals. The study shows how adopting modified Latin alphabets for a language can improve literacy level which further plays its part in the economic development of a country. The article dives into the history of Romanization of languages in the Islamic World and its impact on Literacy and economic development in those countries. Romanization of the Afghan Official languages and its possible impact on Literacy, Economy, and Peace in Afghanistan is discussed.

They vary in the way that they address the inherent problems of rendering written and spoken Arabic in the Latin script. Examples of such problems are the symbols for Arabic phonemes that do not exist in English or other European languages; the means of representing the Arabic definite article, which is always spelled the same way in written Arabic but has numerous pronunciations in the spoken language depending on context; and the representation of short vowels (usually i u or e o, accounting for variations such as Muslim / Moslem or Mohammed / Muhammad / Mohamed ). Method Romanization is often termed "transliteration", but this is not technically correct. Transliteration is the direct representation of foreign letters using Latin symbols, while most systems for romanizing Arabic are actually transcription systems, which represent the sound of the language. As an example, the above rendering is a transcription, indicating the pronunciation; an ﺍﻟﻌﺮﺑﻴﺔ ﺍﻟﺤﺮﻭﻑ ﻣﻨﺎﻇﺮﺓ :munāẓarat al-ḥurūf al-ʻarabīyah of the Arabic example transliteration would be mnaẓrḧ alḥrwf alʻrbyḧ. Arab World English Journal (December, 2017) Theses / Dissertation (ID 190) Pp.1-70 DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.24093/awej/th.190 Author: Maha Abdelrahman Al Hariri Al Zahrani Thesis Title: A Study on the Impact of Arabic Diglossia on L2 learners of Arabic: Examining Motivation and Perception. Subject/major: Linguistics (Bilingualism). Institution: School of Linguistics, Bangor University Wales, UK Degree: Master in Linguistics. Year of award: 2013 Supervisor: Dr. Marco Tamburelli Keywords: Diglossia, colloquial Arabic, modern standard Arabic, motivation, perception Abstract: One of the most distinctive features of the Arabic language is the occurrence of diglossia (Al- Batal, 1995). Diglossia involves the use of two varieties of the same language by the same society for different functions. The principle objective of this independent inquiry is to study the impact of Arabic diglossia on L2 learners of Arabic studying this language in the native Arab environment i.e. Saudi Arabia, which is the centre of MSA variety of Arabic. This study also aimed at understanding the effect of awareness about Arabic diglossia on the motivation of L2 learners. Qualitative methodology has been used to gain an in-depth view of the perceptions and the motivation level of L2 learners in two language institutes in Saudi Arabia. The primary data has been collected through self-administered questionnaires from 15 participants studying Arabic at various stages of language learning in the selected language institutes. The secondary data has been taken from various past researchers and literary works related to the topic of this dissertation. It has been found that the L2 learners of Arabic are generally aware of the Arabic diglossia and understand the functional differences between CA and MSA, but this situation doesn’t significantly affect their learning progress as assessed by their academic learning progress before and after attending the language centre and their willingness to continue learning the Arabic language.

The third title in the series that offers a primer for both general readers and students The Arabic alphabet has a fascinating history, one that is entwined with the development of culture and society in the Middle East. Short vowels, represented by a set of marks below or above the letters, aid in the pronunciation of a word—these are usually only written in the Qur'an, where correct recitation is important, and in texts for novice readers. Or, to take another example, "gh" is sometimes pronounced "f" enough and sometimes pronounced "g" ghost. Enlarge cover. In Arabic short vowels are generally not written. Most writing would have been on perishable materials, such as papyrus. This omission of short vowels can be very difficult in the beginning, because it's difficult to guess which short vowels exactly are missing.
