RAILWAY EMPLOYEE RECORDS FOR COLORADO VOLUME III By Gerald E. Sherard (2005) When Denver’s Union Station opened in 1881, it saw 88 trains a day during its gold-rush peak. When passenger trains were a popular way to travel, Union Station regularly saw sixty to eighty daily arrivals and departures and as many as a million passengers a year. Many freight trains also passed through the area. In the early 1900s, there were 2.25 million railroad workers in America. After World War II the popularity and frequency of train travel began to wane. The first railroad line to be completed in Colorado was in 1871 and was the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad line between Denver and Colorado Springs. A question we often hear is: “My father used to work for the railroad. How can I get information on Him?” Most railroad historical societies have no records on employees. Most employment records are owned today by the surviving railroad companies and the Railroad Retirement Board. For example, most such records for the Union Pacific Railroad are in storage in Hutchinson, Kansas salt mines, off limits to all but the lawyers. The Union Pacific currently declines to help with former employee genealogy requests. However, if you are looking for railroad employee records for early Colorado railroads, you may have some success. The Colorado Railroad Museum Library currently has 11,368 employee personnel records. These Colorado employee records are primarily for the following railroads which are not longer operating. Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF) Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad employee records of employment are recorded in a bound ledger book (record number 736) and box numbers 766 and 1287 for the years 1883 through 1939 for the joint line from Denver to Pueblo. -

General 1.1 Before 1 January 1949, the principal form of nationality was British subject status, which was obtained by virtue of a connection with a place within the Crown's dominions. On and after this date, the main form of nationality was citizenship of the UK and Colonies, which was obtained by virtue of a connection with a place within the UK and Colonies. 2. Meaning of the expression 2.1 On 1 January 1949, all the territories within the Crown's dominions came within the UK and Colonies except for the Dominions of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Newfoundland, India, Pakistan and Ceylon (see "DOMINIONS") and Southern Rhodesia, which were identified by s.1(3) of the BNA 1948 as independent Commonwealth countries. Section 32(1) of the 1948 Act defined "colony" as excluding any such country. Also excluded from the UK and Colonies was Southern Ireland, although it was not an independent Commonwealth country. 2.2 For the purposes of the BNA 1948, the UK included Northern Ireland and, as of 10 February 1972, the Island of Rockall, but excluded the Channel Islands and Isle of Man which, under s.32(1), were colonies. 2.3 The significance of a territory which came within the UK and Colonies was, of course, that by virtue of a connection with such a territory a person could become a CUKC. Persons who, prior to 1 January 1949, had become British subjects by birth, naturalisation, annexation or descent as a result of a connection with a territory which, on that date, came within the UK and Colonies were automatically re- classified as CUKCs (s.12(1)-(2)). -

Sean Andrew Wempe’s investigation of the afterlife in the 1920s of the Germans who lived in Germany’s colonies challenges a narrative that sees them primarily as forerunners to Nazi brutality and imperial ambitions. Instead, he follows them down divergent paths that run the gamut from rejecting German citizenship en masse in favor of South African papers in the former German Southwest Africa to embracing the new postwar era’s ostensibly more liberal and humane version of imperialism supervised by the League of Nations to, of course, trying to make their way in or even support Nazi Germany. The resulting well-written, nuanced examination of a unique German national identity, that of colonial Germans, integrates the German colonial experience into Weimar and Nazi history in new and substantive ways. -

Scottish Missionaries and the Circumcision Controversy in Kenya 1900-1960
International Review of Scottish Studies Vol. 28 2003 Kenneth Mufaka SCOTTISH MISSIONARIES AND THE CIRCUMCISION CONTROVERSY IN KENYA 1900-1960 t the turn of the century, the British High Commis- sioner in East Africa set up various areas in which A Christian missionaries were allowed exclusive influence. Scottish missionaries served the largest and most politically astute tribe in Kenya, the Kikuyu. Scottish educa- tion, combining a theoretical base with vocational training, attracted the best and the brightest of Kikuyu youths. This type of education provided a basis for future employment in government and industry. Jomo Kenyatta and Mbui Koinanage, both future nationalist leaders of Kenya, were converts and protégés of Scottish missionaries. However, in 1929, a sudden rift occurred between the Kikuyu Christian elders and congregations on one hand and their Scottish missionary patrons on the other side. The rift came about when the Scottish missionaries insisted that all Kikuyu Christians should take an oath against female initiation. Two thirds of the Kikuyu Christians left the mission church to form their own nationalist oriented churches. The rise of nationalistic feeling among Kenyans can be traced to this controversy. The issue of female circum- cision seems to have touched on all the major ingredients that formed the basis of African nationalist alienation from colo- nial rule. This article argues that the drama of 1929 was a rehearsal of the larger drama of the Mau Mau in 1950-1960 that put an end to colonial rule in Kenya. Though initiation practices were widespread in Kenya and the neighboring Sudan, the Scottish missionaries were unaware of them until 1904. -

JOHANN LUDWIG KRAPF Johann Ludwig Krapf (1810 - 1881) was a German missionary in East Africa, as well as an explorer, linguist, and traveler. Krapf played an important role in exploring East Africa with Johannes Rebmann. They were the first Europeans to see Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. Krapf also played a key role in exploring the East African coastline. EARLY LIFE Krapf was born into a Lutheran family of farmers in southwest Germany. From his school days onward he developed his gift for languages. He initially studied Latin, Greek, French and Italian. More languages were to follow throughout his life. After finishing school he joined the Base! Mission Seminary at age 17 but discontinued his studies as he had doubts about his missionary vocation. He read theology and graduated in 1834. While working as an assistant village pastor, he met a Basel missionary who encouraged him to resume his missionary vocation. In 1836 he was invited by the Anglican Church Missionary Society (CMS) to join their work in Ethiopia. Basel Mission seconded him to the Anglicans and from 1837- 1842 he worked in this ancient Christian land. Krapf later left Ethiopia and centered his interest on the Oromo - the Galla, people of southern Ethiopia who then were largely traditional believers. He learned their language and started translating parts of the New Testament into it. While 1842 saw Krapf receive a doctorate from Tubingen University for his research into the Ethiopian languages, it also witnessed the expulsion of all Western missionaries from Ethiopia, which ended his work there. -

TRANSLATIONS INTO SWAHILI Viera Pawlikov A-V ilhanov A Institute of Oriental Studies, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Klemensova 19, 813 64 Bratislava, Slovakia e-mail: [email protected] Johann Ludwig Krapf, a German Lutheran in the service of the Anglican Church Missionary Society, was not only the first modem missionary in East Africa, he was a pioneer in the linguistic field and biblical translation work especially with regard to Swahili. A little later Bishop Edward Steere in Zanzibar translated into Swahili and published the New Testament and in 1891 the entire Bible. The pioneering linguistics of early missionaries, Ludwig Krapf, Bishop Steere and Father Sacleux set a high standard for a succession of Swahili experts and Steere’s Swahili Bible provided a basis for Biblical translations into other East African vernaculars. The first modem missionary who pioneered missionary work in East and Central Africa was Johann Ludwig Krapf, a German Lutheran from Württem berg, educated in Basel, who arrived in East Africa on 7 January 1844 in the service of the Anglican Church Missionary Society.1 Krapf joined the CMS to participate in new Protestant mission initiatives in Christian Ethiopia2 and he started his missionary career in the Tigré province in 1837. Unable to work there, he went instead to the Shoa kingdom where in 1839 he and his co-work ers were warmly received by the king, Sahle Selassie, only to be expelled in 1842 for political reasons.
