Korn’s cathartic sound positioned the group among the most popular and provocative to emerge during the post-grunge era. Korn began their existence as the Bakersfield, California-based metal band LAPD, which included guitarists James “Munky” Shaffer and Brian “Head” Welch, bassist Reginald “Fieldy Snuts” Arvizu, and drummer David Silveria. After issuing an LP in 1993, the members of LAPD crossed paths with Jonathan Davis, a mortuary science student moonlighting as the lead vocalist for the local group Sexart. They soon asked Davis to join the band, and upon his arrival the quintet rechristened itself Korn. After signing to Epic’s Immortal imprint, they issued their debut in late 1994; thanks to a relentless tour schedule that included stints opening for Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, and 311, the record slowly but steadily rose in the charts, eventually going gold. Its 1996 follow- up, Life Is Peachy, was a more immediate smash, reaching the number three spot on the pop album charts. The following summer, they headlined Lollapalooza, but were forced to drop off the tour when Shaffer was diagnosed with viral meningitis. While recording their best-selling 1998 LP Follow the Leader, Korn made national headlines when a student in Zeeland, Michigan, was suspended for wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the group’s logo (the school’s principal later declared their music “indecent, vulgar, and obscene,” prompting the band to issue a cease-and-desist order). Their annual Family Values tour also started in 1998, featuring a lineup that consisted of Korn collaborators such as Limp Bizkit and Ice Cube and like-minded artists such as Rammstein. The tour was an enormous success, so much so that it continued on with Korn overseeing the lineup for years after. Allmusic. 1. STUDIO: 1994. Korn (1994, Immortal, Epic, EPC 478080 2, EU) 1996. Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the ’70s. Of these concept albums, Dark Side of the Moon resonated strongest, earning new audiences year after year, decade after decade, and its longevity makes sense. Nektar’s debut album was one of their finest releases, saturated with abstract psychedelia and a wonderful science-fiction motif that is magnified through the rigorous but dazzling Mellotron of Allan Freeman and Roye Albrighton’s nomadic guitar playing. Throughout Journey’s 13 cuts, Nektar introduced their own sort of instrumental surrealism that radiated from both the vocals and from the intermingling of the haphazard drum and string work. The band was formed in 1991 by vocalist , lead guitarist , and drummer José Pasillas while enrolled in Calabasas High School and later expanded to include bassist Alex “Dirk Lance” Katunich, and Gavin “DJ Lyfe” Koppell; both of whom were eventually replaced by bassist and DJ Kilmore, respectively. Incubus has attained commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. After their first two albums, (1995) and S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (1997), the band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself which spawned several hits, including the band’s highest-charting song “Drive.” Success continued with the albums (2001) and A Crow Left of the Murder… (2004). Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and was followed by Incubus’s first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009 and the band’s 2011 album, If Not Now, When?. Incubus also released an EP, (Side A), in early 2015, and two years later, the band released their eighth studio album, titled 8, on April 21, 2017. A second EP, Trust Fall (Side B), was released on April 17th, 2020. Worldwide, Incubus has sold over 19 million albums. Here are all of Incubus albums ranked. Don’t miss the music of the multi-platinum artist Incubus! Click and enjoy the popular songs of the 90s and 2000s! 8. Fungus Amongus (1995) “I was introduced to Incubus through this album & it’s still in my everyday playlist. I think of it as the anthem of my life. Fungus plays with 1/3 prophecy, 1/3 superfly funkydelic, & 1/3 heartfelt agony, all rising to a transcendental crescendo that even heathens can appreciate. Listen to Fungus Amongus, S.C.I.E.N.C.E, & Make Your Self to invoke the Buddha mind. There’re only good omens. It’s only up to you to remember to find them.” 7. If Not Now, When? (2011) “It takes a few listens for good albums to grow on you. I find albums I like straight away I get bored of. Albums that have grown are ones I still listen to twenty years later. This album was a “grower”. The album is beautiful in places and frenetic in others (Switchblade). I keep coming back to the album and each time I do I fall in love with it a little more. No, it isn’t anything like their previous albums. But that’s what makes it so good. I don’t want to buy another Morning View or Light Grenades. I want to buy something different – it is one of the reasons I love Incubus so much. They don’t repeat themselves. If them taking a different direction is a cause for giving a bad review or condemning the band, then I would have done that after .” 6. 8 (2017) “I LOVE this album. I’m a huge Incubus fan and have been since the late 90s. Every album they’ve put out since S.C.I.E.N.C.E., I have loved. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the evolution of their sounds and their lyrics always seem to hit me! “8” is no different. When I first heard Incubus was dropping new music I was already excited but when I heard the title of the album would be “8” I was beyond ecstatic! 8 is my lucky number and has always held a huge significance to me. The music on this album overall is pretty mellow, but lyrically there is a lot here. I was going through a rough patch in my life right before the album dropped in April and the lyrics to “State of the Art” really hit me at the time. There is an overall theme of individuality, growth, and overall transcendence to this album! I’m super excited to see them perform these songs live!” 5. Light Grenades (2006) “Incubus has always put their emotion in the forefront with the awesome vocals and that is still here. The production to most of the songs is varied to a tee. (Check out Quicksand and then Dig and then A Kiss To Send Us Off). I think the biggest surprise for me is how almost all the songs sound different. Yes, we’re used to that with my favorite band ever. HOWEVER, it has a bit of everything for all old and new Incubus fans. HOWEVER, if you didn’t like A Crow Left Of The Murder, I’m afraid that you should pass on this. It’s all about the slower mid-tempos focused on love gone bad. I have always loved the softer side of them and this is why this album is my second favorite, possibly on the way to being my favorite.” 4. A Crow Left of the Murder… (2004) “Incubus albums take more than one listen to grow on me and invade my brain with goodness. They are so different from album to album while still having elements of their sound carry through all albums. This album is worth the buy just for Megalomanic. It is a predictive song for 2017-present political landscape in US. Boyd was totally seeing the future of the US when he wrote the song back in 2004. It is a TOTAL TRIP. The rest of the album is also great. Perfect album to add to my music library.” 3. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. (1997) “Science is one of the best CD’s I have ever listened to. It is one of those few disks that I can listen from start to finish, even coming back to it a decade later. It is energetic, fast-paced and revolutionary with regards to lyrics, vocals, guitar, and effects. I will sit my kids down one day, and make them listen to it when they bring me some schlock they think is good music, and I hope it will improve their existence as it has mine.” 2. Make Yourself (1999) “If you like the Incubus sound, you cannot fail to enjoy this album immensely. Every song grabs your attention and holds it with amazing lyrics or awesome guitar riffs. My favorite tracks – The Warmth, Privilege, Stellar and Clean, but all are really very close or at to 10/10. all 5/5. buy it and see.” 1.Morning View (2001) “There are so many good reviews; I simply nod my head in agreement as I read them Yes, this is their best LP and while I did NOT study music theory, I am still aware that the melodies and orchestration are complex. My boyfriend would write about “cord progression” and the like, and I I say bully for him. I simply know what is good hard rock music and this is good hard rock music that crosses over into other genres and back again. That is what makes Incubus refreshing. Their music is NOT formulaic. This album is their best. I am able to relate in some way to every song, either because of the lyrics, the music or both. I love and appreciate the LP Morning View. This is definitely in my “I’m having a bad day and need something good to listen to” genre as well.”
