  • Land Use Change and Environmental Sustainability: the Case of Lagos Metropolis
The Sustainable City VII, Vol. 1 157 Land use change and environmental sustainability: the case of Lagos Metropolis I. I. C. Nwokoro1 & S. O. Dekolo2 1Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Lagos, Nigeria 2Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Lagos State Polytechnic, Nigeria Abstract Land use is a most important factor in the distribution and functioning of ecosystems and benefits derived by man. The Malthusian geometric population growth and continuous demands for food, shelter, clothing, energy and even pleasure has led to depletion of natural resources. Land is limited in supply and its finite nature makes it a scarce resource that cannot meet its demand. The use of land is a reflection of our decisions, which will determine how sustainable our future will be. Detecting land use changes requires timely and accurate information which can be assured by using remotely sensed data and GIS. Analyzing the correlation between land use changes and their impacts is essential for spatial planning at various spatial levels (global, national, regional and local levels). A cursory look at the sporadic growth of the Lagos metropolis reveals an unquestionable exert of pressure on the existing rural land, agricultural and forests resources. This paper examines Spatio-temporal trends in land use and land cover changes in the Lagos Metropolitan region, especially the loss of forest resources and agricultural land to urban development. Landsat images were used to produce land use classification maps for a period spanning sixteen years (1990 and 2006). The study was limited to these two dates due to cost and difficulty of acquiring satellite imageries.

It is the visible limb of the state that is used to direct and control development. In Lagos State, physical planning is used more in ‘development control” rather than “development planning”. It also comes into use in the many instances of urban renewal. The rapid urbanization witnessed by Lagos State brought about a sprawl on the whole of Lagos Island. The combination of rapid urbanization, physical planning policies and the cultural heritage of the area have evolved a cocktail of highly diverse styles in the buildings and metropolitan form within the same continuum. This research examines the physical planning policies on Lagos Island over a twenty-year period (1995-2015) and their direct effects on the evolution of the city while trying to control development.

ADESOJI, Taofeek O. HASSAN, Nurudeen O. AROGUNDADE Department of History, Obafemi Awolowo University ABSTRACT The minority problem has been a major issue of interest at both the micro and national levels. Aside from the acclaimed Yoruba homogeneity and the notion of Ile-Ife as the cradle of Yoruba civilization, relationships between Ife indigenes and other communities in Ife Division (now in Osun State, Nigeria) have generated issues due to, and influenced by, politi- cal representation. Where allegations of marginalization have not been leveled, accommoda- tion has been based on extraneous considerations, similar to the ways in which outright exclu- sion and/or extermination have been put forward. Not only have suspicion, feelings of outright rejection, and subtle antagonism characterized majority–minority relations in Ife Division/ Administrative Zone, they have also produced political-cum-administrative and territorial ad- justments. As a microcosm of the Nigerian state, whose major challenge since attaining politi- cal independence has been the harmonization of interests among the various ethnic groups in the country, the Ife situation presents a peculiar example of the myths and realities of majority domination and minority resistance/response, or even a supposed minority attempt at domina- tion.

  • Nigerian Media, Indigenous Languages and Sustainable Development
Nigerian Media, Indigenous Languages and Sustainable Development Harrison and Rachael Lagos State University, Nigeria 1. Introduction The idea of a global village, the aspiration of man at this jet age, is aided not only by the Internet, but also more seriously by other types of media. Thus, man, through the media, can get what language form, fashion, music etc are in vogue. In little or no time through our listening to the radio set or watching the television set, we could get to do what others are doing. The media, therefore, become a fast means through which we could get anything promoted. The objective of this paper is to examine the role of the media in the development or otherwise of Nigerian languages. We trace such contributions to the developmental stage the country, at present, finds herself. Development in this study covers a number of concepts, which range from education, social, cultural, to indigenous linguistic maturity. For the study therefore, we examine the radio and television programmes of two media houses each from inception to date. We see how these organisations have consciously or otherwise promoted or chocked the language and consequently culture, through their programmes. We link such positions to the people’s mental and social developments. The study is anchored on Gerhard Leitner’s The Sociolinguistics of Communication Media. Geshard Leitner based his work on address media in the context of the communication dominion. He reveals what performance is, what parameters are that determine its norms. He equally looks at the functions the media aims to fulfill in the society.
