There is every reason to remember Holmboe, who was President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters Abel’s mathematics teacher at Christiania Cathedral School from when Abel was 16. Holmboe discovered Abel’s talent, inspired him, encouraged him, and took the young pupil considerably further than the curriculum demanded. He pointed him to the professional literature, helped Your Majesties, Excellencies, dear friends, him with overseas contacts and stipends and became a lifelong colleague and friend. -

Atiyah of the University of Edinburgh and Isadore M. Singer of MIT. This is the second Abel Prize awarded following the Norwegian Government’s decision in 2001 to allocate NOK 200 million to the creation of the Abel Foundation, with the intention of award- ing an international prize for outstanding research in mathematics. The prize, amounting to NOK 6 million, was insti- tuted to make up for the fact that there is no Nobel Prize for mathematics. All About Abel Dayanara Serges Niels Henrik Abel (August 5, 1802-April 6,1829) was a Norwegian mathematician known for numerous contributions to mathematics. Abel was born in Finnoy, Norway, as the second child of a dirt poor family of eight. Abels father was a poor Lutheran minister who moved his family to the parish of Gjerstad, near the town of Risr in southeast Norway, soon after Niels Henrik was born. In 1815 Niels entered the cathedral school in Oslo, where his mathematical talent was recognized in 1817 by his math teacher, Bernt Michael Holmboe, who introduced him to the classics in mathematical literature and proposed original problems for him to solve. Abel studied the mathematical works of the 17th-century Englishman Sir Isaac Newton, the 18th-century German Leonhard Euler, and his contemporaries the Frenchman Joseph-Louis Lagrange and the German Carl Friedrich Gauss in preparation for his own research. At the age of 16, Abel gave a proof of the Binomial Theorem valid for all numbers not only Rationals, extending Euler's result. Abels father died in 1820, leaving the family in straitened circumstances, but Holmboe and other professors contributed and raised funds that enabled Abel to enter the University of Christiania (Oslo) in 1821. Abels first papers, published in 1823, were on functional equations and integrals; he was the first person to formulate and solve an integral equation. He had also created a proof of the impossibility of solving algebraically the general equation of the fifth degree at the age of 19, which he hoped would bring him recognition. -

Eclat´ , with its roots in french, means brilliance. The journey from the origin of Terminus a quo to the brilliance of E´clat is the journey we wish to undertake. In our attempt to present diverse concepts, we have divided the journal into four sections - History of Mathematics, Rigour in Mathematics, Extension of Course Contents and Interdisciplinary Aspects of Mathematics. The work contained here is not original but consists of the review articles contributed by both faculty and students. This journal aims at providing a platform for students who wish to publish their ideas and also other concepts they might have come across. Our entire department has been instrumental in the publishing of this journal. Its compilation has evolved after continuous research and discussion. Both the faculty and the students have been equally enthusiastic about this project and hope such participation continues. We hope that this journal would become a regular annual feature of the department and would encourage students to hone their skills in doing individual research and in writing academic papers. It is an opportunity to go beyond the prescribed limits of the text and to expand our knowledge of the subject. Multiple influences combined to the success of various techniques to extract oil and gas without fixed platforms; this thesis put particular emphasis on the relaxation of hierarchies in fostering innovation. Such disintegration occurred within firms in which empowered employees took on larger responsibilities and between firms. The pace of innovation accelerated where people were allowed to sort out things themselves rather than conforming to directions from above. Initially these conditions were more evident in offshore support services serviced by shipping companies, but practices pioneered in shipping eventually spread to the proper offshore oil industry. Two business units at Kongsberg, Albatross and Kongsberg Offshore, serves as a vantage point for this thesis. Kongsberg Offshore pioneered production systems that help oil companies control the flow of petroleum from a valve tree on the seabed rather than on fixed platforms. Albatross pioneered dynamic positioning, a technique that helps shipping companies maintain their position using propellers rather than mooring lines and anchors. -

Moral Values Education: Characterizing Japan and Norway’s Primary School Curriculum Cara Jacoby Master Thesis Master of Philosophy in Comparative and International Education Institute for Educational Research Faculty of Education UNIVERSITETET I OSLO November, 2006 ii i Abstract The idea of moral values education as a formal subject in the curriculum has waxed and waned; however, considering the rapid rate in which societies are evolving, it is clear that moral values education is as important as ever. In order to insure that children and young adults are prepared to become active and educated participants and decision-makers in modern society, they must be guided responsibly by moral and democratic principles. This thesis is a comparative perspective of moral values education in the primary school curriculum of Japan and Norway, which considers both of these nation’s unique historical and cultural foundations, as well as the evolution of the philosophy of education in each society. The aim of the paper is to characterize moral values education in Japan and Norway and to determine what is distinctly Japanese and Norwegian in terms of moral values education in the primary school curriculum. The study is situated within the interpretivist paradigm and is mainly qualitative in nature. I have chosen a multi-method approach which includes reviews of historical events connected to the foundation of moral values education, and a comparative and evaluative design of the current national core curriculum as it outlines the goals of contemporary moral values education. As a starting point, my inquiry examines the historical development of the national education system and the philosophy of education in both Japan and Norway. -

LES INFLUENCES SAINT-SIMONIENNES EN NORVÈGE AU XIXe SIÈCLE : VOLONTARISME ÉCONOMIQUE ET ESSOR DU SOCIALISME Jean-Marc OLIVIER Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès Laboratoire CNRS Framespa Labex SMS Mesurer l’influence des écrits de Saint-Simon et de ses disciples en Scandinavie se heurte à de multiples obstacles. À celui des langues, s’ajoutent l’éloignement et la dispersion des archives. C’est pourquoi je tiens à remercier Aladin Larguèche et Svein Erling Lorås de l’université d’Oslo pour leur aide précieuse. Intuitivement, et par un raisonnement téléologique partant des succès du modèle suédois initié par la social-démocratie, on pourrait penser que le saint-simonisme a reçu un accueil très favorable et très large en Suède, mais visiblement ce n’est pas le cas. Finalement, c’est dans l’autre royaume de Bernadotte, celui de Norvège, que s’épanouissent les préceptes économiques et sociaux du saint-simonisme. Des liens forts et directs peuvent ainsi être mis en évidence entre l’évolution socio-politique norvégienne et la pensée saint-simonienne à partir des années 1840. Deux hommes symbolisent ces liens : Ole Jacob Broch (1818-1889)1 et Marcus Møller Thrane (1817-1890). Le premier influence durablement la politique économique du royaume de Norvège en initiant une modernisation des infrastructures fortement inspirée de l’action des frères Pereire et des écrits de Michel Chevalier qu’il rencontre à Paris. Le second apparaît comme l’un des fondateurs du socialisme scandinave en reprenant des formules de Saint-Simon sur les classes sociales parasitaires et la dimension révolutionnaire du christianisme. Det har vært 5 år fylt med mye læring, utfordringer, fortvilelse og mestring. Forelesninger, øvinger og eksamener har fylt opp ukene, og minnene er blitt mange. Jeg minnes Per Haag sine mxn-matriser, der jeg den dag i dag fremdeles sliter med skille mellom m-ene og n-ene i håndskriften hans. Jeg tenker tilbake på Marius Irgens billedlige beskrivelser av å se sammenhengene i matematikk, der jeg lærte at det var viktigere å se skogen enn trærne. Og så tenker jeg på Peter Lindquist sine humoristiske stikk til alle som ifølge ham ikke skjønte matematikk. Ingenting ville jeg vært foruten. I den forbindelse er det på sin plass å takke alle som har bidratt til 5 minneverdige år ved NTNU. Først vil jeg takke alle medstudenter, kommende lektorer og ikke minst vennene jeg har hatt og fått i løpet av disse årene. Dere har alle bidratt til at disse 5 årene har forsvunnet i en fei. Årene har vært fylt med mange gleder, festligheter og opplevelser. Sammen har vi gjennom oppturer og nedturer kjempet oss gjennom et utfordrende 5-årig lektorstudium, og er nå klare for sette våre kunnskaper og ideer ut i praksis.
