  • Bc Salsa: Identity,Musicianshipand Performance in Vancouver’Safro-Latinorchestras
BC SALSA: IDENTITY, MUSICIANSHIP AND PERFORMANCE IN VANCOUVER’S AFRO-LATIN ORCHESTRAS by MALCOLM Al KEN B.Mus., The University of British Columbia, 2004 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2009 © Malcolm Aiken, 2009 11 ABSTRACT For over twenty-five years, musicians, dancers and singers of Afro-Latin music have maintained an active presence in the culturally diverse music scene of Vancouver, BC. During this time, the music performed and created by this group of artists has undergone dynamic changes in sound and function, reflecting a new transcultural music identity. This music, commonly referred to as salsa, is being created, performed and transformed by musicians of all backgrounds and social classes. Local composers are incorporating a variety of musical influences into their music and assimilating elements of the city’s music cultures. Today, an eclectic mix of musicians in Vancouver are creating new forms of music rooted in the Afro-Latin music traditions, and are establishing a unique contemporary musical scene. At the forefront of salsa’s local history are the Afro-Latin dance bands prominent in the city’s dance community. Their impact on the musicians and local music culture has been paramount and pivotal to the exposure of salsa to a mainstream Canadian audience. One prominent factor in the continued growth of the music has been the influence of the many non—Latino musicians who have assimilated into the salsa community as performers. Their musical and cultural influences have helped push the music in new directions and maintained the music’s relevance within the wider arts community.

When did the rascals of “The Front Page” turn into the scoundrels of “Absence of Malice”? Why did reporters stop being heroes played by Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Cary Grant and become bit actors playing rogues dogging at the heels of Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn? It all happened in the dark as people watched movies and sat at home listening to radio and watching television. “The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture” explores the continuing, evolving relationship between the American people and their media. It investigates the conflicting images of reporters in movies and television and demonstrates, decade by decade, their impact on the American public’s perception of newsgatherers in the 20th century. The class shows how it happened first on the big screen, then on the small screens in homes across the country. The class investigates the image of the cinematic newsgatherer from silent films to the 1990s, from Hildy Johnson of “The Front Page” and Charles Foster Kane of “Citizen Kane” to Jane Craig in “Broadcast News.” The reporter as the perfect movie hero.

  • Beck Nach Fast Sechs Jahren Mit Neuem Material US-Musiker Kündigt Für Februar Eine Neue Platte An

Thorcraft Cobra ~ The Distance Thorcraft Cobra have perfected the seemingly lost art of combining big, radio-friendly hooks with big, classic-rock guitars.” - LA Weekly “It's not really a record people can bone to, so it better be cerebral.” – Billy Zimmer First off, despite their righteously badass nom de artiste Thorcraft Cobra are not purveyors of weed- hazed, beer-soaked SoCal Throttle Rock. Together, Billy Zimmer (Brown Eyed Susans) and Tammy Glover (Sparks) combine a knack for concise pop songwriting, a gift for crafting immediately engaging melody, and impeccable taste in rock and roll sonics into something that is both fresh and undeniable. Zimmer and Glover first crossed paths when their respective acts signed to the same label. “I started as a fan of his guitar tone” relates Glover, “but quickly fell for his wit and songwriting skills.” Zimmer’s band, Brown Eyed Susans, had moved to Los Angeles, recorded a lost classic Afraid of Heights with Jason Falkner (Beck, Air, Paul McCartney, Jellyfish) producing, and was seemingly poised for success. Meanwhile, Tammy became the drummer for brothers Ron and Russell Mael in their iconic band, Sparks, and toured the world. When Brown Eyed Susans imploded in a cloud of dust, Zimmer retreated to his depressing North Hollywood wood-paneled hermitage to lick his wounds. He started working on some rough demos, and decided to play a few for his labelmate. “I wasn't super confident in my work. Then I played some it for Tammy, and she was like, "whhhaaatttt". And told me that it was good, and that she should play drums on it and we should put it out” explains Zimmer.

Ambience with Andy (from Lowercase Noises) 1 Matt: So Nate, the funny things is, we were supposed to record this podcast on 4/20. Then I realized you were on vacation, so we couldn’t do it. But I did prep a really funny intro to the podcast that I would like to read to you still. Nate: Okay, I guess. Matt: Here we go. Welcome to Don’t Weed the Bulls Budcast, it’s 4/20 and we’re going to talk about some really trippy, deep stuff. Like how music affects your mood. But first! Nate: That’s great, man. Matt: It was pretty stupid. But in all reality we do have a pretty good guest on today. Andy Othling of Lowercase Noises, which is an ambient instrumental project. He’s going to be talking to us about how music and mood and consciousness and all that plays off each other. But first. Nate: But first! Holy cow, I’m looking at this list of new patrons. Matt: Dang. Nate: We’re going to read a really long list right now, and butcher it badly. Matt: Yes, yes, we thank them by butchering their names, that’s how it works. Nate: Yeah. So here we go, I’m going to try this without butchering anybody’s. Alright here we go: John Hone, Seth Gunter, Michael Jewel, J’han Borzhan, Erin Benninger, Joey Holt, Mo Dubs, Nick Halversen, Torrin Donowski, Kevin Morrey. That was easy, I blew that one. No synth. No horns. No female vocalists. That's not to say that those ingredients couldn't once again be combined for Platinum payback. But what Winwood and Capaldi needed — and have realized — on this go round is a solid blast from the past The flute (reminiscent of John Barleycorn) is what you notice first, followed by the trademark minor chords and bluesy extended song structure, complete with plenty of period piece Hammond work and just the proper amount of well placed fuzz tone. Gotta love the fact that you can't make out all the words on first pass, too, just like in the old days. It might also be significant that Steve and Jim wrote the tune, as opposed to Steve's collaborations •••,,TrefelW with Will Jennings that most recently blanketed the airwaves. Be aware that other than Capaldi's signature stick work, Winwood plays all the instruments, flute included. Also be sure to make max use of the Pro-CD's live version of "Glad" from Winwood's last tour.
