Interview Guy Manning British multi-instrumentalist Guy Manning: “I like my albums to be more than just songs” (December 2011, text by Henri Strik, edited by Peter Willemsen, pictures provided by Guy Manning) For several years Guy Manning asked me if I would do an interview with him. After every new album I said I would love to talk to him, but there was always something that prevented me from doing so. With the release of his twelfth studio album Margaret's Children (see Manning Web site Press page) I finally managed to do what I had promised to do for such a long time. Guy certainly deserves this attention, because he certainly is one of the most underrated musicians in the progressive rock community. So finally here it is: the Guy Manning interview for Background Magazine! Can you tell me please why you made a sequel to the Anser's Tree album? What's the story behind Margaret's Children? Guy Manning: “Okay, let me start with the story first! There really is no linear narrative storyline concept in either album, that is, no storyline like in The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Snow or Tommy, but there is the container concept which is a concept that binds the songs together under one umbrella idea, like a single family or a house. The idea behind both albums is that this is one family and the songs are the stories about the characters in it. From the earliest Margaret Montgomery set around 1600 in Scotland right through to Dr. Jonathan Anser in the near future. -

A Review of Manning - The Root, The Leaf & The Bone by Imperial for (Progressive Ears) October 2013 “First of all, it was October, a rare month for boys”, the opening line of Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. That line has lived with me through most of my life and it’s one that’s had particular relevance this year. Less than a fortnight ago I was listening to some great music in good company at the Summers End Festival in Lydney. Whilst there I was handed a copy of The Tangent’s, L’Etragere Du Travail, by Andy Tillison himself and on my return home, through the mail, I received two new CDs – North by John Lee’s Barclay James Harvest and The Root, The Leaf & The Bone by Manning. A rare month indeed and we’re only half way through it! Guy Manning has, over the last few years, become a particular favourite singer/songwriter of mine. He possesses a rare ability to tell musical stories in the most lyrical and expressive manner, one that breathes life into the subject matter of his songs. So, what of the new Manning release, The Root, The Leaf & The Bone? The album consists of nine songs that are loosely concerned with the concept of change – our place in history, our relationship with the natural world, memories of earlier times and the legacy we leave behind us. Each and every day we walk amongst our history, whether it’s out in open view or buried beneath our feet. This album is Guy Manning’s reflection on what that all means to us in an age where we rarely have chance to contemplate anything other than what we’re doing at any given moment. -

INTERVIEW FOR PROGARCHIVES FORUM Prog stalwarts such as the Flower Kings, IQ and Porcupine Tree need no encouragement only acknowledgement as they have a sizable fan base and imposing sales, yet they are still mostly prog enthusiasts who have day jobs and create this music out of love. Guy Manning is one of those incredibly talented and prolific musicians who need both acknowledgement and encouragement, having delivered 10 albums in 10 years that are easily some of the finer jewels in the recent prog pantheon. While his contributions with The Tangent are very noticed, his solo output contains some amazing music that is original, invigorating, adventurous and exciting and would appeal to a vast panorama of fans of plain old good music. I have had interesting communications with Guy, a dedicated, passionate, intensely proud and gifted composer and multi-instrumentalist. Both toroddfuglesteg and myself (tszirmay) have joined in a conspiracy to” shine a little light” on this fascinating artist that fully deserves a “STAR” status within the Progressive World. During this time, the music performed and created by this group of artists has undergone dynamic changes in sound and function, reflecting a new transcultural music identity. This music, commonly referred to as salsa, is being created, performed and transformed by musicians of all backgrounds and social classes. Local composers are incorporating a variety of musical influences into their music and assimilating elements of the city’s music cultures. Today, an eclectic mix of musicians in Vancouver are creating new forms of music rooted in the Afro-Latin music traditions, and are establishing a unique contemporary musical scene. At the forefront of salsa’s local history are the Afro-Latin dance bands prominent in the city’s dance community. Their impact on the musicians and local music culture has been paramount and pivotal to the exposure of salsa to a mainstream Canadian audience. One prominent factor in the continued growth of the music has been the influence of the many non—Latino musicians who have assimilated into the salsa community as performers. Their musical and cultural influences have helped push the music in new directions and maintained the music’s relevance within the wider arts community. -

1 Murphey, Michael Martin [entry from Slatta, The Cowboy Encyclopedia, 1990, 1994) Singer, songwriter, promoter of cowboy culture. With his highly successful 1990 album, "Cowboy Songs," Michael Martin Murphey became the country's leading evangelist for western music. It is, he says, the "music of my people, of my land." Murphey has won millions of converts who agree with his choice. "This is not the hot new country. This is the great old western." Murphey grew up hearing and singing cowboy songs around campfires at Sky Ranch, near Lewisville, Texas. He left Texas to attend UCLA in the late sixties. "I went out there to study Greek and Latin and Roman history and medieval history. I was interested in the classical world, the ancient world, and the medieval world. And I'll tell you my reasoning for that. I feel like I was the wandering minstrel of today, and I really wanted to study the wandering minstrel of the ancient times, and so, I got into all that because I was interested in actually digging up more stuff on the early, early singer-songwriters and minstrels. And I had a great time doing that." At UCLA Murphey set his studies to song with a folk-rock group called the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Murphey's love for and knowledge of history continues. He often gives audiences intriguing glimpses into the musical and social history behind his songs. In 1971 Murphey returned to Texas, just in time for the great outlaw music rebellion.
